The stock market was once an institution of the free market. Only people with industry knowledge traded on it because without that knowledge there was no way to earn a return against the value of money. The money increased in value due to increases in production. It wasn't until the Fed started massive inflation and the government created tax incentives to force people to flock to the stock market to keep from losing their money. Now it's a day-swinging beast without regard to sustainability.
