@ajfreshkid I'm just playing off the Cello score. I think it's the best way to go, but you'll obviously need to read bass clef and have a bass clarinet that goes down to low C.
@XxEternaldreamer13xX If I could summarise about 10 years of lessons into one sentence, it would be 'use more air'. Find music you enjoy and play the everloving shit out of it.
i was listening to this and you got very quiet. and i must say, your tone is phenomenal in the hardest of volumes. very impressive that you can play that quietly with out much airiness. clearly you have found tthe right mouthpiece and eed setup. great job!
Hi, great sound, really impressive! What clarinet and mouthpiece are you playing (if I may ask)? Especially the lower tones sound much more beautiful than most (if not all) bass clarinets I know.
This was a while ago and I've changed set up since then (and I don't think I'd stand by my playing much), but if I remember correctly I was using a Selmer D mouthpiece on a Buffet Prestige low C Bass. The Prestige has a wonderful resonance hole on the bell which makes the low C have the same sound quality as all the other notes.
While the bass clarinet is normally written for with a treble clef(same as a normal clarinet) most bass clarinettists are able to also play off bass clef parts. The only difference is the transposition then - a bass clarinet still sounds a tone lower than a cello reading the same part.
is the book one with bass clarinet solos? yellow and green? i played a back minuet and gigue at my schools last spring concert. and what would i expect to pay for a low c?
Nope, it's straight from the cello score. My best advice is just to get an edition of the cello suites and play off that. Transcriptions exist for clarinet, but they don't really make use of the low range of the bass.
As for the cost, any make is pretty expensive. I think the retail on my one is now about $17000 AU but you probably wouldn't end up paying quite that much. Selmer models would be a similar price, Yamaha maybe a bit cheaper.
I've heard they've perfected their bass clarinet in the last ten years or so, it sounds great. I know the instrument doesn't make the player, but it certainly doesn't hurt either!
Yep, the opinion I've been getting from a lot of players is that Buffet have really got their act together, and it looks like this clarinet is becoming the standardised orchestral bass clarinet.
awsOme basss clarinets rock !!!! i play iht aht my school. im in dah 8th gradee nd my band director says i am beyond of wer im suppose to be.:) nd dis video has shown me i kan do better! thanks!
Wow, good job. I wish my band teacher would give me bass clairnet music instead of clairnet music. All I play in band is stupid high notes and the reason I play bass clairnet is because I LOVE the low notes.
I was using a Selmer C star and a grade 3 Rico Grand Concert select. On the C star, I've found my standard vandorens to be a little too unclear and fuzzy. I'm trading up to either a selmer D or an F now, which handle Vandoren 3.5 classics(what I use on everything else) much more reliably. I've also recently switched to a BG L91 ligature, the difference that makes is remarkable and is a fine complement to any high end selmer mouthpiece.
Ta mate, I'm planning to record more(and re-record this) when I've got time, at the moment I'm doing a lot of trialling of different mouthpieces and my set up is far from static. Thanks for listening!
Good job!

@SoUnDoLe I have a low c Selmer.. Doesn't the low c extension go in to bass cleff anyway?
vacuumlover1 6 months ago
@vacuumlover1 I guess you could view it that way. You can still keep everything in treble, it just makes for a lot of leger lines!
