  • these guys were known for their perfectionism in the studio. I think it shows in the live performance. so tight and clean. perfect

  • becker's playing is blowing my mind

  • "tonight when I chase the dragon, the water will change to cherry wine"

    great heroin metaphor

  • All this and a Ray Bryant tune too? Taste

  • yeah...hot!!!!

  • genius songwriting. as always.

  • Man, is there anyone smoother? 9 dislikes=9 people that blow Chunks (Chunks is my dog).

  • Where did Donald Fagan get that sweet "Bebop Daddys" tee shirt?

  • @jeremyungar I have looked everywhere for one of those. Can't find it. Not sure if it's a band, or a club or what.

  • I find Becker's playing to be pedantic and uninspired

  • @MisterIanPickering Then why are you here listening to it? I'm sure he doesn't care one damned bit what you, or I, think about his playing. I do know he's made a lot more money at it than what I do!

  • @MisterIanPickering your problem

  • can I buy his keytar?

  • great post - and praising Fagen and Becker is sheer impertinence - they don't need it from me. just incredible performance

  • the booya sisters(as ive called them for years) are awesome

  • love it slow and funky without any show off fast runs and shit, mean!!!!

  • I love Steely Dan,, they have been in my life and thoughts, often wonder without this band I could have made it in the music world in unfavorable question.

  • @MultiShades HENDRIX

  • Excellent music!

    ¡Excelente música!

  • Hey Steely Dan cant be matched by any other band. They write and play their own music. Such amazing lyrics no one can match this quality of music!!! From New York to LA on Sunset Blvd they are the best band ever!!!!!!

  • Peg

    Babylon Sisters

    Kid Charlemagne

    FM

    Do it again

  • One of the best songs of them!!!

  • Just the best music on planet earth... Carolyn Leonhart is a Goddess..

  • Fagen has slightly prominent incisors, like a vampire-in-training. Cynthia Calhoun is the most attractive woman in the history of civilization.

  • I really don't believe there is EVER a bad time to play Steely Dan...

  • greatest band named for a sex toy ever!!!! No JOSIE...wasup with that.

  • P I N E K N O B!!!!!!!!!

  • @1MNAT

Wrong. It's smoking heroin (or opium, but in the day, it meant smoking heroin)

  • Comment removed

  • @1MNAT

I know what you said the first time...it was wrong and by you simply repeating it doesn't make it right. During those days and times, it was smoking heroin. At that time, I don't think crack was even in production, folks were freebasing cocaine, but crack had yet to make it's awful presence known. I smoked opium a few times, but never heroin. In fact I tried about everything BUT heroin and wanted nothing to do with crack.

  • @SaxyDan54 you are indeed correct, thanks for making that distinction

  • @beckmondo99

and a Tip o' the Hat to you!

  • @1MNAT it means smoking heroin. not speedballing

  • @ReggaeMusic3

I thought "chasing the dragon" was finding a vein to shoot up?

  • @ReggaeMusic3 I thought "chasing the dragon" finding a vein to shoot up??

  • @therbs442 Chasing the dragon is when you burn heroin on a piece of foil and smoke it through a straw.

  • @ReggaeMusic3 Actually It refers to smoking any kind of opioid, but most often smoking heroin; some people call it that because of the curling smoke, others because you'll always be chasing a high, the method that you sited is one of the most popular, but the phrase can be more ambiguous.

  • What masturbatory music do u squat and listen to? Lady Googoo?

  • how the fuck can u sit and listen to this music!

  • AT night when I chase the dragon....yeah baby!!!!

  • LOVE Steely Dan - but could the lead gtr BE any higher in the mix??

  • Awesome. Walter Becker rocks the Knopfler guitar parts.

  • This is such an incredible tune. You have to admire Donald's commitment to craftsmanship.

  • Ever had one of these days? Not me, thank goodness! Should have come with the Senior Class Year Book. The entire class dancing away with this playing on the loudspeakers following Graduation. Oh the days gone by.

  • i wish that one day mark knopfler will join them to play this great song live

  • these fools are tighter than some rat titties as my bball coach used to say...

  • I feel sorry for the 8 people that don't like this video!

  • how famous is this guy?

  • @lockerzonly extremely famous. steely dan was a huge band in the 70s.

  • @goinsane6 he went to my highschool lol, i had no idea

  • @lockerzonly are you serious??

  • @goinsane6 yea lol, its not like he stops by everyday tho lol, he just attended r school like 1000 years ago haha.... r school is known for music tho now that i think about it.. the marching band was rated like 18th best in the country.... but idk if that has ne thing to do with him lol, i just thot of the music

  • @goinsane6 yea

  • @lockerzonly Oh thar guy... Walter Becker, the co writer of these songs?

  • There's a great Steely Dan tribute band here in Alameda california. I don't think they do this tune. That piano line before the jam is tricky.

  • "Chasing the Dragon" has nothing to do with the big C.

  • Fagan looks like a chem professor and Becker looks like someone's podiatrist. But they are 2 damn funky white boys.

  • @JerichoDitch2 You just made me laugh my A$# off at 6:20 in the morning. Thank you so much.

  • @JerichoDitch2 very true. Just saw them tonight at The Greek, and Becker tore it up!

  • I wish i could write a song like that and on top of it have beautiful woman as backup singers

  • doesnt this song just make you feel on top of the world .. especially when drunk or high, love you steely dan

  • didnt know this was about drugs. just love the song. he doesnt sing too well anymore..

  • LIKE IT!...LIKE IT!....LIKE IT... LIKED IT THEN, LIKE IT NOW!!!.... ANYBODY EVER LISTEN TO THE WORDS???

  • You haven't been to a concert until you attend a Steely Dan show.

  • Pine Knob is the greatest outdoor venue in Michigan. Love seeing these guys there.

  • ibigdaddy, your'e right about "chasing the dragon" it's black tar on foil. Water may change to "cherry wine". The NYC & Jersey area Methadone clinics issue cherry-flavor methadone. It's bitter-tasting otherwise. I'll leave y'all wondering where I get my info. (yes personal experience.) can't argue with cannedkitty-to each his own.

  • Close, this song is about smoking heroin. You put on foil, light it underneath,as it melts, runs, and smokes, you "chase the dragon"

  • @ibigdaddy@ibigdaddy You are correct. This song is not about coke or hash, it's about smoking opium/heroin. The lyric is not "direct from Laos," it's "direct from Lhasa," a region of Tibet where opium grows. (Check the Dan website, the lyrics are right there.) And in case there's any doubt, "people are rolling in the snow," "snow" being an old hipster term for heroin. Yeah, it's a great, groovy, beautiful tune about heroin. That's the Dan for you.

  • Perfection and grace....

  • Do I see Cornelious Bumpus (Doobie Brothers) on sax and keyboard?

  • Donald Fagen is a musical genius.

  • Haha...Walter Becker looks like Cliff Clavin but man he rips!!

    GREAT Song!!

  • Babylon sisters " Shake it" lol

  • Did he just call God a wanker?

  • 'God a wanker' might be a good title for a new Steely Dan song. But we'll have to do with 'Godwhacker' for so long. And that's not so bad.

  • Real music!

  • I've been a "Dan" fan for 30 years . I've yet to see them live because I won't go without my dad and my brother . In my boyhood , there wasn't a night that went by that my dad didn't put us to bed with : Aja , Mangione's Feels So Good , or Winwood's Arc Of A Diver . ...Wonderful memories , and world-class music .

  • You're really depriving yourself from one of life's unique experiences. I've seen SD twice. First time was about 10 or 12 years ago, then again last month. It was quite the treat both times. The music will cause you to relive memorable episodes of your life. And the fans seem mostly to be within the same mind-frame. It's a fascinating experience which you'll enjoy with or without your family.

  • These Guy's sound as good as ever! AMAZING!!

  • such a great song to snort cocaine to

  • haha. amazing.

  • @cannedkitty Your right!

This tune is about smoking hash as Walter once said in Rolling Stone.

" it's direct from Laos (importer philippine dragon bong). "chase the dragon( the bong) "and the water will change to cherry wine" "silver (silver bong bowl) will turn to gold (bong bowl resin)"

  • @cannedkitty

    Oh yes! LMAO!!!

  • @cannedkitty its about herion bro

  • @cannedkitty - For the record, "chasing the dragon" refers to a Horse habit, not Blow!

  • @cannedkitty For the record, "chasing the dragon" refers to a Horse habit, not Blow.

  • They tie the song down really nice. Bring it on home...1 2 3 4.

  • *grin*

Don should consider taking it down to a lower key these days :)

One of their best tunes... thanks for posting.

  • In the top 5 songs of the Dan??? I'd say so.

  • Definitely.

    Maybe the best.

  • They opened with this one in Orange Beach, Ala. 19 Jun. Best live show....ever. 13 real musicians on one stage. I just wish they could get Chuck Rainey back on the bass.

  • yea i saw steely dan june18th in st.augustine fl. and they opened with this too. it sounded very good.

  • that was awesome

  • fagan is totally hot and so is keith carlock the most fabulous drummer out there right now!

  • got this one tonight in durham!

  • I love the background singers. They look like they're having such a good time. I love this music. Thanks for posting this.

  • great music to recover from surgery with. Lifts the whole mood baby! These guys own it...

  • I will be recovering from surgery later this month and I agree, if this doesn't help nothing will. Good luck!

  • smoking heroin is probably good Rx post-op

  • Those back up singers are so gorgeous!

This band really cheers anyone up!!!

  • beautiful back-up singers...sound good too.

  • Funny even though his vioce is gone he sounds better than those who pass for singers now. The music and talent of Steely Dan is timeless. They are a tight band much like how Little feat is tight . Two completely different styles but both great. Stan Kenton of Big Band jazz made a comment about Steelydan when playing at Towson State in the positive. He said they had a jazz sound that surpassed anyone else. I used to see him every year.

  • Although Mark Knopfler did the studio guitar.. Walter Becker was laying down some very righteous tones!!

a great player in his own right!

  • The original guitar work on the studio album was performed by Mark Knopfler (Dire Straights). His style can't be copied very easily. Becker does a good job though.

  • sexy

  • not too crazy about the singing, but i like the feel of the guitar, and i like his tone :)

  • they sound much better in real life, a lot is lost in the translation

  • Timeless classic.

  • Don saying "Pine Knob! Acronyms be damed!" must be referring to the fact that Pine Knob is now called DTE Energy Amphitheater.

  • Man, Fagen's voice is really gone, isn't it? On all of these live clips from the 2000s, his voice sounds faint and weak, and he's relying completely on the chick singers to carry the higher notes.

He also sounded terrible when they did Do it Again at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame show in 02

Oh, well, that happens sometimes to singers when they get to be 50 or 60 yrs old. Bummer, though

  • Give the guy a break :-)

  • hell, he had a lot of backing vocals on the studio version of this song.

  • I will say this... That is one of the chewiest Rhodes tones I have ever heard in my life. I still havent heard a Rhodes on a live SD recording sound as good as that one does... WOW!

  • Michael Leonhart is her brother (The trumpet player). She is married to saxophonist Wayne Escoffery.

  • gimme the back up singer in the middle...

  • Carolyn Leonhart. I think her trumpet-playing husband would object.

  • who's the coolest guitar player ever ?

  • Me, of course. But Walter is No. 2 ;-)

  • put a dollar in the kitty

  • Corney was the best band sax player ever. The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan and others just lack that little edge of perfection he provided. Peace Corney.
