  • Sounds sweet, and re-amping the bass track later is always an option.

  • He says the REDDI DI has a relatively hot output, so he feeds it into his Distressor compressor. Other DI units usually go into a preamp.

  • I think that DI box actually is a type of 'preamp', which can be fed into your A/D converter.

  • It might sound really nooby. But are you supposed to connect the DI box to your pre-amp?(Not talking about this video, but in general_

  • He really helped record Tay Zonday? Sweet.

  • Hey thanks for the videos by the way. I'm a newbie so I did learn some things.

If you like metal check out the album I produced for my band on youtube - Descendant

  • 5 americans musta disliked this

  • Man I like this idea, I think the sound is great, but I really hate the tone on this video, I'm more of a fan of the natural bass sound mixed with a bit a mix cutting character, still this was awesome

  • what bass is that? looks like some sort of musicman?

  • @stexnookie yes it is a Music Man, more probably a Stingray as the beveled edges on the body give it away.

  • A very cool, but not at all a "new" idea, either tracking a clean & dirty setup or stacking gain stages with multiple Overdrives/Distortions . I've moved onto a 3 track setup of a pre-preamp D.I. Ultra-Clean track, a post-EQ clean track, and a post-EQ & post-Effects track, with either of the last two straight to the board or to a miked amp and submix the tracks. If anything, I'm surprised how crappy he managed to get a Music Man BFR Dargie Delight II Sterling 5 to sound...

  • I'd boost the mids on the sans amp and turn down the treble there and it would sound cool

  • The video response "whatever happens" posted for this video is the end result of this set up (same gear, same player), so you can hear what is sounded like in the mix

  • I'm guessing you can get real cool sounds with a very good bass pre. Normally would bring the studio units out to a live location. But here they're using stuff that you would bring to a live setup and combine them in the studio and compress and EQ separately. Anyway I would track it down as pre to DI for one channel and direct from speaker line down to line level into the multitrack.

  • Drug sounds!

  • thanks. looks like a good technique

  • If Anyone wants to hear how the bass sounded in the mix, search you tube for the song "Whatever Happens" by Robert Lopata.

They used a different guy to pretend to play in the video because this player (ian) was out of town.

  • My cort curbow plugged directly to pro tools sounds really better than what I heard here.Blah blah blah............the results are really different from what you say.You can say 1000 how good it sounds but for real there's too much for too little.I really prefer my cort directly.

  • Awesome video. The bass has a nice "hole" in it for the other instrumentation to fit. Chris' videos are always full of useful, real-world info.

  • The bass itself is horribly buzzy, rattley, and totally out of adjustment...need a truss rod tweak and possibly other setup issues dealt with. The recording techniques themselves are OK, nothing earth shattering...wow, blend two contrasting sounds...I think I first did that in the mid 70's...

  • @MrBassflute some people like that sound - just cause you don't like it doesn't mean its setup poorly. its just a different preference.

  • @omgitsaoe And some people just don't realize the difference...

  • @MrBassflute Thanks for chiming in, I totally agree about it being nothing new. That is why I said I am just passing along things that I learned from the guys that came before me. I do not make videos like this for guys who have been doing this since the 70s, if for the guys and gals just getting into this that do not have a chance to learn from our peers like we did in the old days.

  • 5 string music man....i wants....

  • Grab the audio from this tune at speedyconversion doht cohm.

  • A sansamp bass driver, what a surprise. A big secret is discovered. ;) kind of klack-a-di-klack- kind of....lol

  • A sansamp bass driver, what a surprise. A big secret is discovered. ;)

  • Thank you!

  • The bass tone is awesome with this combo! Very great sound to make sit in a mix nicely. To the people who said it sounds bad...you don't understand the sound structure of a bass guitar in a thick mix. This is the type of sound you need to get low end, while avoiding low end mud. Also, the high end produced by the Sans Amp will get the notes to cut through.

  • Ugh...I rather just record with a simple Radial DI, I mean even the Radial Pro ($80) can give good results.

  • @ChicagoBass Radial makes great D.I.s! Especially the JDI.

  • doesnt sound all that great to me.I get better sounds using only a behringer bass v amp

  • @hirskdubbi show us

  • Great! Really useful advice. Cheers for the tips.

  • sounds great! thanks for the tips Ronan!
