a way you could get him to come to a complete stop is to just kneel down in the middle where you were and just say "woah". it tells him that you are no longer wanting him to canter/ lope. :)

i love how he lopes/canters and it's a slow movenment.especially to the left. very pretty markings too! he is a good boy!
