This over 4 years old now and I am resisting Neal's requests to take it down. Neal is still making music. See the video response above and several clips on my Channel, especially have a look at Tri's "The A Set" - never said his titles were original. As well as Irish band Tri he plays with acoustic band The Fallows. Regards
@fearnothingdearone. You should hear his latest versions. I do not like to keep posting new updates of older clips. Have a look on my channel for his latest playing. Especially look out for Tri playing The Killarney Boys Set and The A Set. Cheers
Today, my irish classmate decided to teach me how to step dance to a reel, and I decided to learn. So we went into an empty classroom, turned on youtube, and chose the first reel we saw. And as a result, today I danced my first reel to this. First, I'd like to thank the player for giving us such a smooth tempo. And secondly, well, it's very, very good!
I like playing along with this, but today for the first time I tried to play and even though I know my fiddle was in tune, the pitch was way off. Did someone do something to this clip to change the pitch? Or is it my computer?
Aidan O Neills is a great competition version. To place in the fleadh you need to play the pure tune and take out anything that might be deemed to be outside the tradition. Neal's version is full of originality - he did not qualify for the All Ireland this year!
And THAT is why I prefer Neil's rendition to O'Neill's. The " special something" I call it, YOU called it " originality" . He has great potential and he WILL leave a mark in Irish music, of it I am sure.
This boy´s rendition of the tune is closer to O´Neill´s version than the version given by D.Brody in the fiddler´s fake book. Just came to think of it^^
You are amazing. Keep posting stuff I love to listen. I can't imagine someone so young being so incredible. You have an inspiring gift. Keep up the awesome work!
Preferably get a local player to show you how to play rolls, triplets, cuts etc and show you where they can be played. The Matt Cranich CD/Book Irish Fiddle tutor and the Kevin Burke Homespun Irish Fiddle DVD might also help - the DVDs show tunes played slowly including examples of the ornamentation. After that it is down to lots of practise and listening to other players/CDs.
Hey thanks dor the vid! Congrats, well i ave the same question, i live in portugal, and there arent any irish fiddlers that i know here, and its impossible to buy those books in here, ive once had a masterclass with the violinist gilles apap and ive asked him about the triplets and he told me that was a question of bow but needed alot of training and couldnt be explained in such a small time, perhaps you could tell me more or less how to do the triplets?
It goes by both names. Farewell to Ireland is probably the older one because it derives from a 200 years old strathspey called Highlander Watches Farewell to Ireland, which you can read on the very same website, but since the Bothy Band recorded it several times as Farewell to Erin, this is the name it usually goes by.

I think this is definitely "Farewell to Ireland" not "Farewell to Erin" - that's another, different tune.
surfoid 4 years ago 3
No, this is DEFINITELY Farewell to Erin, Farewell to Ireland is a 2 part reel in G- check 'the session' website.
