My cellphone camera does the same thing, but without modifications. Never thought about using a webcam thought. Be good for security cam. I'm going to try to get the high powered IR bulbs. I've seen IR spotlights for $50 brand new.

uuh my webcam can already see infrared... So can my cellphone camera, photo camera. I think all cameras. But for some weird reason logitech put a infrared filter in their webcams.

Yep, my sony camcorder can see it as well. As a matter of fact, a lot of cameras don't have the IR filter but, as you said, for some reason logitech has it.

Suggestions: Light, light LIGHT and focus on your objects to allow our prying eyes to see what your prying hands are doing. This and less hand movement in front of the lens and you'd have great "how tos".

i have bought an infrared, but i can see the red tinge, and all my camera does is turn the red into a whiteish pink. but it looks exctly the same (brightness) the only thing that changes with the video is the colour of the light. does my camera need a nightvision mode for it to work better? or was i ripped off for an infrared light

You have to pull apart the cam in order to remove the IR filter. When you've done it, the cam will be able to watch IR .. simple! But this is for webcams, because in fact those expensive digital cams normally watch IR by default.

You can also install filters in your webcam to filter out everything but infrared.

no, it doesn't mess up the image if it doesn't have it. Basically, the filter is there to prevent your camera from viewing IR, either because you don't want your videos to show up with possible IR interferences that may be arround you, or because they will want to sell you a camera more expensive just because it sees IR :)

Nightvision magnifies the lightsource thousands of times making you able to see better in low light enviroments

Infrared equipment makes you see light invisible to the human eye, like lasers and remote control beams

So they are not the same

Infrared LEDs are available from Jameco Electronics and multiple eBay auctions. You will need a power source and resistors (resistance depends on the LED and so does the power. The power will depend on the number of LEDs also). Mount them with the webcam and you're all set.
