I am also doing a project for school and have to write a mock IEP meeting. I chose an actual boy (rather than a fictional one) that I encountered when I worked at a day care who had an "behavioral/emotional disorder". I really hate the labels they use for children because they are so much more than that. This video is a great way to communicate that!
hi there Bless you i was just labeled to having aspergers and ADHD a not long ago and i am almost 25 years old was in speical ed in school but at that time they did not know anything other then that i was slow at learning and having issues with reading and emotional melt downs
It's a very moving vid, and I love the way you managed not to focus just on the difficulties Asperger brings, but more on the person your son is. Cudos and good luck!
This is so awesome! I'm a special education teacher and was thinking of creating a video to start my iep meetings but I love that a parent did it. This is awesome!
I added a video response to your video -- although its presented in a bit of an angry way, my message is that IEP students are still students, and deserve better than what they're getting now.
I too am blessed with an Aspie son..now 12 years old. We have an upcoming IEP in 10/09...and I hope to be able to create a similar slideshow highlighting my son too. Thanks....great idea.
I am a teacher and a mom--this should be required viewing for all of us involved inthe IEP process...just to remind us of how important these decisions truly are. Thank you.
I am a student teacher working on a project on special education. I am also a mom. Your video moved me to tears and will serve to remind me that each child I encounter in my future practice is somebody's world. Well done:)
What a beautiful video and an incredible idea. You are an amazing mom and have a lovely family. I hope that this video accomplished everything that you had hoped.
This is beautiful! It brought me to tears. What a brilliant idea his mother came up with. I have dealt with IEP's, inept teachers who have not the patience nor the desire to see our children as individuals and of course, watching my son, who is now 14 with ADHD, struggle all these years. I have refused to drug him and i carefully weighed out the pros and cons concerning MY SON. Kudos to this wonderful family and my love and best wishes to her beautiful son.
Drugs have done wonders for me -- and coffee. I can sit through an entire book without getting up now. I mean, I don't think my grades will change that much, and they're mostly Bs, but I'm a lot calmer, happier, whatever.
Wonderful !! handsome young man and family. I also have a 12 yo son ...in 6Th this year..with AS/ADD.
Great idea.....wonder if I could get something like this about my son in place by 4/7/09. ????
Fortunately MIddle School for my son has been a positive experience for us. He does'nt cry this year when I drop him off in the mornings !! wonderful LEA who really cares..and willing to learn about ASDs.
Thanks for such an innovative idea. I have been trying to find ways to make the school see my son as a person and not "just another kid with an IEP." My son's IEP meeting is this Friday. Just enough time to to put together a video of our own! Thanks again!
Great video! I saw this posted on Wright's Law and had to see it. My son is ten and on the spectrum as well. What a great way to humanize an IEP meeting.
Great video! I want to suggest something...you should put this video on teachertube as well...us teachers are unable to access youtube during school hours and I know that you could reach so many teachers if they were able to get to the video easier!
Hi, sorry it took me so long to get to this but I wanted you to know that I did upload the video to Teacher Tube. My user name is moodymom so you should be able to find it there now. Thanks for the idea!
so touching i was moved in so many ways. im in college majoring in elementary education i love children and i esp love working with them..nothing makes me happier than seeing a child's day brightened..ive had an iep all through school and i still continue to use it. i hope your son is doing well! he seems to be very bright and sweet. good luck to you and god bless!
This is a very moving video. I work with children with disorders such as this wonderful young man.I hope that one day labels will be a thing of the past and there will just be an "everyone". This demonstrates the A-bilities of a child versus the DIS-abilities.
what a nice video, I hope you can be a good voice for your son & advocate. it is very hard in society to raise a disabled son--mine is 18 w/mental illness. its a struggle but I love my son as well. Good looking kids you have by the way! : )
This video is excellent. I also have a son with Asperger's Syndrome. This video made me cry, what a great idea you had. I shared this with my son's principal and his autistic support teacher and asked them to share it with the rest of the school staff.
