Switzerland is multi cultural, influences from Germany, France and Italy as well as the guest workers from all over Europe.
However, in the last 20 or so years, there has been a large intake of refuges from Serbia, Kosovo and etc. Unfortunately there have been negative incidents caused by these migrants.
Consequently, I can only assue that the outcome of this vote has to do with that. In a way, the people wanted to express their anger, eventhough it may has not been the right way to do it.

I think we were just overwhelmed by the huge number of immigrants over the past few years. And we didn't just have Muslims to worry about. The Swiss people have voted, yes, but with the influence of propaganda under right wing influence and without a balanced view instead with irrational fear and prejudice. Already there is talk of international boycott of Swiss banks, travel,shops, godds & services.Also no more credibility as a mediator.If Swiss people want this they will need to live with the consequences.

It will be interesting to see if a full EU member (Italy) is allowed to have such a vote. I doubt that it will be allowed to happen. It appears that the Swiss still live in a democratic country eg the government & public sector still see it as their purpose to serve (& listen to) the people.
The unelected Brown & Mandelson personify the EU's descent into the post democratic era.

BTW, I'm so in love with democracy that I live in Switzerland and I voted against this intolerant proposition. In here in Geneva we have a minaret and we have overhemingly voted against the initiative, and we are proud of it.
