Phase contrast is similar to the dark stop you might use with a compound microscope. A ring lined up to be within a loop all within the imaging chain. This lights from an extreme angle but also makes up for the half a wavelength lost in magnification, thus clearing this up a treat :) Very very rewarding especially for microbes and pond life....

I own an AmScope microscope and it goes up to 2000x magnification, but I'm not quite sure what phase contrat is. Could you explain it to me? Thanks.
