So what, is this going to take over adobe flash? I'm getting a degree is Web Development and I just want to know if I'm going to need to study this for html5.
@whitewillow89 lol if u keep studying u wun learn shit..download some jquery start making ui's javascript css and xhtml and practice will make u better download xampp and start writing php....best advice: download drupal and start making ur sites
I want to create a storyboard for my animated series.... and importing frame after frame would take too much time. Will there be drawing and coloring tools after Edge's final release?
Dead end technology. As much as any other javascript-based animation it can't compete with flash in terms of anti-aliasing and smoothness, nor can it compete with both javascript and flash in terms of programming capavilities.
This is simply a marketing hoax directed at no good beginners and tasteless sites.
How does the JavaScript code look? Bloated? Using jQuery? Cross browser compatible? MouseEvents? Scripting? Loaders? External Data?
Here's the thing, doing something well in Flash can result in amazing interactivity with tiny file sizes, but if the JavaScript is too big in an HTML5 composition than I'm sticking to making my interactive apps in Actionscript/Flex and Flash!
In all modestly, I'm looking forward to trying this software out. A good Web designer understands the "keep it simple" rule, and will use this in moderation as a benefit to the website. As with anything else, it's about moderation, so dwelling on the potential drawbacks is quite silly. I see an array of positives with this. In my humble opinion, this will open a lot of doors for us, making simple tasks much more device-friendly.
There are going to be a few great sites that use this in moderation, but given the abilities of the unwitting public, we're going to be subjected to widespread abuse of transitions and animation without any thought towards user experience and functionality.
Great Tool Thanks Adobe...I have used your products since 1989 Beta PShop! These so called web developers that only want content deserve just that. What losers. Sorry these geeks are too lazy to learn new tools. FLASH IS GREAT!

great... this is going to fill the web with even more people who have no idea how to code properly and just drag and drop shit everywhere. thanks adobe
Another application to give regular noobs the ability to do something, that has taken many others time and effort to accomplish.
Still looking forward to trying this out though, it's like the difference between a kid with a Nikon, and a seasoned photographer with a Canon 5D Mk II =)
@Pepperspizzas So...I suppose you built your own computer from scratch like Wozniak and Jobs did, and created your own operating system and software, instead of just buying a pc/mac and turning on like a noob would do.
That's what worries me about these tools. A lot of websites out there are made by amateurs, and a lot of amateurs love the little-effort-big-reward features of programs like these. Give them embossing and gradient in Photoshop, and they'll use them. Give them animation abilities in Edge, and they'll use them. They don't care whether they're appropriate or not, they only care whether they look cool... to them. Nice looking tool though Adobe, mind you I'll be sticking to my text editor.
interesting,,something in between AE, CSS and flash gathering some animation tools,,,it could be useful i guess for simple things, although you can do the same either in AE and Photoshop, even if this last one is the pain in the ass to animate .
Main problem: html 5 isn't strong enough yet. And the speed of neither html 5 and flash player has any comparision with native apps. It'd be nice, however, to see an adobe product which could bring all html javascript css and flash together. It nusiance when one programing language can't do everything as3/js etc.
(1) Adobe tools don't kill the internet, bad designers/developers do. There is no licensing requirement or mental health check required to be a designer, so market forces will have to do - if a website sucks, don't visit it.
(2) Advertising pays for the internet. Improvements to the efficiency and conversion rates of internet advertising will result in companies devoting more cash to their digital channels, resulting in better web content.
@wladwlad Nope. Some may be smaller, but not faster, not all them are that small too.
Content in HTML5 y HTML, is like load the webpage itself without any additional content, certainly depending on the amount of content HTML5 files can be huge, but not bigger than the usual flash files (where a .swf can size 200kb, HTML can be 60-80kb).
@AnonymousMachine sure as hell they are faster, there is no JS engine that beats flash in speed. If you mean faster in terms of loading, that's false as well. Flash player comes with embedded classes, with JS you have to load libraries with the content. Also - .swf files are compiled, reducing the size even further. Identical ads (same graphics, same animations) will always be smaller in flash.
There is actually a great amount of flash trash an animations on mostly websites.
What the hell they want? To keep the flash trash or change them to light weight HMLT5 format?
Damn it, for people like the top comments and the idiots who gave thumbs up, its the reason why we have those disturbing flash advertising everywhere: "They do not know what they want."
@pierbover: What I mean is whether this program can do what ActionScript could do in terms of using movie clips, go to and play, getURL, rollovers. There are other programs like this that don't, such as Wallaby. And what I meant about After Effects was that I wish this javascript animation could be exported from After Effects. Hopefully this relieves your facepalm.
I wish this could be done with After Effects since AE has much more power than this. My main question is whether this has any scripting capabilities. Buttons, links, etc. I'm guessing no since there hasn't been any other html5 animation solution that does. Also, all that looping would probably have had an expression type of loopOut() like After Effects. Great start though.
@dmellis  Don't you think that if every computer on earth could render AE animations in real time there would be no need of Edge or even Flash? Of course this has scripting capabilities, it's done in JavaSCRIPT.
Adobe's role is to provide the tools. How web professionals are going to use it is another question. If we're going to have new sites with advertising spam and slow transitions is not for Adobe to discipline them or teach them how to animate a web site with prudence.
This is really cool and all, but this is going to annoy the hell out of me when more websites start using transitions and animations. That was the number one reason I hated all flash sites. Every little click had a 15 second sliding-fading-etc transition to look cool. It was presentation over content taken to the extreme.
@Voltius I completely disagree with your comment, flash can/could be used to present websites with fluid transition of details and information. The 15-second fades you mentioned are done by people with lack of UI/UX skills. There are 1000s of websites built via plan html that just look like clustered garbage...!!! doesn't mean the web is dead, people just need to hire better web design/developers
@Voltius That won't "really' be the case since all of this is JSON and not a big bloated Flash player. It's all JavaScript so time and size won't be a problem. Now that everyone is "hip" to SEO and how important content is you will see more "presentation" AND content. I think Flash is going the way of Director. Edge looks like the real deal. Apple should have created a product like Edge. Kudos to Adobe for getting off their butts and creating a good HTML 5 IDE.
@SplogMan Flash is not going anywhere any time soon . LOL Look up a video called "See What Flash Can do with the Molehill 3D API " there is not really a bloat problem in Flash. HTML5 will not even be ready for the web for another 8 years that's what the programmers are saying.
@Voltius well that depende on the mind behind the site.. if they're correctly implemented, animations can be great! You just need to know when an where to put them.. do not abuse!
@Voltius As has been demonstrated on various devices and in usability testing, a proper transition is actually BETTER than no transition. While I agree that having 15 second ridiculousness is way too excessive, a simple 0.5 second slide or fade actually makes the site feel more interactive and quick, than if it was instantaneous. This has held up in numerous usability tests, and is why devices like Android and iPhone use various transitions.
I hope Adobe will integrate this tool with the entire creative suite set of tools.Support and roundtripping from Illustrator/fireworks/photoshop/dreaweaver cs5.5/6 will be ideal. Ability to do state by state animation and support for liquid layout is just the killer that Adobe needs to get investors back and soar their share price. Adobe should look beyond just banner ads. This tool requires all the interaction gestures HTML5 got to offer. Adobe should take a cue from Flash Catalyst. Good Job.
3 important Q's:
1. When is the full version going to be available?
2. What are the limitations of the current version available from Adobe Labs?
3. What is the best use of this tool? << Is it only to replace Adobe flash in making animation that is more web native?

But what amaze me more, its the actual people who gave them thumbs up.
The fact Adobe is making easier the access to HTML5 will not make the amount of advertising about there to increase.
Even better, if designers start to use HML5 to create their ads, it will increase the performance and load time of websites.
Also, I'm not sure what those jackasses in the top list want to mean.
