I have a serious question and need some serious advice....will the mini-14 hold it own against the AR15? I dont want to have 2 speed $1000-1500 for a good AR when i could spend less on a wepon that could be just as good. Any advice would be be helpful!
i own an ak47, my brother loves his ARs ive fired many guns over the years but if i was only allowed one gun i would take my MINI 14 in a heartbeat. it is the most accurate and reliable weapon i own or have owned or have fired.

Good gun. Way too slow though for a "simulation". In combat you have to be a lot quicker on your feet and on the trigger. Not out of control fast. But cool, collected, controlled fast.
I think 2-3moa for this rifle is an understatement, my 581 series 18" barrel ranch rifle can shoot 1MOA; it tends to like some ammo more than others but I honestly can shot 1MOA with xm193f which is by no means a "target" round its only about $7 a box. I do use a scope and bi-pod when doing that kind of shooting, but it is within the mini's capabilities.

Can anyone with some experience with this rifle say whether it'd be a good first rifle or not? I'm looking into getting my first rifle, and this is definitely an option. I'm an experienced shooter, so I don't feel the need to get a .22 to learn how to shoot with, and my father has plenty of .223 ammo stored up, but would it be a good system to start on? Any advice or suggestions of other rifles would be appreciated.
This was my first rifle (same as you, plenty of experience shooting, but first rifle purchase) and I would highly recommend it. They are plenty accurate, really fun to shoot, and reliable. You won't be disappointed. If you are into customization, The mini has a wealth of options, you just have to know where to look.

@DaBurntToaster Actually it's not. You can even find a tactical version in SOME stores. The laws are so sketchy here, some stores say NO tactical, some sell them lol. I live in Cali I know how it feels, but mini14 DOESN't suffer from the bullet button like the AR/AK guns. Altho, I like the ranch version, in a gun that can't compete with AR accuracy, i'll take the extra 2 inches of barrel over a lfash hider any day, a little extra velocity and a little extra accuracy. @irishScott2 In California you cant have a flashider only a muzzle break. The muzzle break also has to be permenately attached or clamped on since in California we cant have a threaded barrel of any kind.
So my first time shooting a long rifle more powerful than a 22 was a mini 14. Out of 20 rounds I hit all but 3 on a 1 square foot steel target 100 yards away. I don't know how impressive that really is, but I'm buying one in 1 month when I get the money. Got it on layaway.

Thank god for this gun, as a Canadian I can't own an ar or ak, no problem I will get this mofo instead, you just showed me I can hold my own with it. Too bad I can't get mags with more than 5 rounds in them, but if SHTF one day.... I can get bigger mags... Heck maybe I should hide some in a hole somewhere... I would get an sks but up here they weld some shit in the gun to limit the capacity, not something you can easy remedy.
Only problem I have with the video is that everyone is using scopes. Not reticle scopes but full high power magnification scopes. You don't use them in combat in the way they are using them. In fact, in close quarters the setups that they are using will get them killed.
Mini 14 are sooo underrated. Better for home defense than Ar's, excellent field results (takes to dirt, water, etc. well; with AR you might kill yourself), lighter, and easy to aim in close quarters. With green tip ammo, you can fight and win against a SWAT unit. Yes, Yes although accurate cannot beat AR at LONG ranges. But that is not where the fight happens. I really think people underestimate this weapon's defense value. In hand to hand, it is a better weapon to use than a cheap plastic AR.
USMC trigger-puller beats USAF pilot on the pistol segment. Then USAF pilot beats USMC trigger-puller on the rifle segment. I can't quite put my finger on it but something is not right there.
@oeyesea Well, it looks like the Air Force guy has more practice in and has tweak his shooting style with mini. The Marine guy just begun his service and was shooting an AK. It's not like he was shooting with an M16 usually issued for the Marines. I think he would have to do couple of practice runs in before getting graded. If you want a more accurate results. You need to get three guys that know each one of those weapons very well and have the same experience to spar in my opinion.

I consider them to be tools, nothing else. Other more "trusted" and popular forms of info like the news, regular websites, newspapers often have far more bias in them due the only 1 person writing it and fitting it to their own agenda. Its far harder to write what you like if you have to back it up on wiki.

Per the reference to the lack of rails. I have mounted a set of Leapers G36 aluminum rails on the sides of my factory stock and it works great.
I have also developed my own magazine release to make changes ALMOST as fast as an AR. getting them in is still a trick, but the release is super fast.

@mcxznbv I've never had a chance to play with the mini, but I have an M1A. Basically, ARs have a single point of attachment for the magazine, giving it a lot of wiggle room once locked in. That's why ARs, even nominally reliable ones (never seen such a critter, but I've heard rumor) will jam if you try to rest the rifle on the mag while firing. Two point attachment, such as AKs, minis, and M1As use are much more stable and make for a more reliable weapon by eliminating one point of failure.
@nov284 i'm just saying, take the AK series (let's use the AKM as an example). the front of the magazine slips in, maybe a quarter inch. then you rotate the back up to lock it. the top of the magazine isn't in very far. the M1A especially, you have to life the magazine inside the gun, THEN lock it in. why not have it AK-style?
@mcxznbv I'm not very familiar with AKs, only in passing, but once you get used to the idea that it's okay to use a little force, M1As are very quick and easy to lock a mag into. The hook that holds the front half of the magazine in is the recoil spring guide, and it will press out of the way as you insert your magazine. So basically, if the mini is a similar style, I'd say it wouldn't be too bad at all, you know?

Again that was a question even if it looked like a criticism. Let me know what your philosophy about the SH test is. It just seems like the mini 14 and AR 15 are too close to be compared in a way with so many variables.
Nutn, I love your videos... I just have one question. It seems like testing these types of systems with the SH is pointless. If they use the same caliber round, your SH score is mainly due to just how well you shot on that particular run. If I were to test the XDm against the glock by a simulated combat run and gun, I could easily have a great run with the XD, and a bad run with the glock. Someone else could have the opposit outcome. Bottom line, table top reviews are more accurate.

How does the Mini-14 take to cheap steel case ammo? I've heard from several gun shop guys that the Mini-30 doesn't take took kindly to steel case 7.62x39.

My mini is a 183 series stainless pencil barrel. puts out a little less than 1.5 moa. I would give my left nut before I give up my mini.

Here's the thing about bench rest group results:
Lake City XM193 55 gr ammo meets Milspec at 2 MOA or less at 100 meters.
When it is tested at the factory, it is fired from a gun with a match 24 inch barrel and a match chamber, strapped to a stand, with a machine actuating the firing pin.
If you are shooting US military grade ammo, and achieving 2 MOA, you are shooting to the full capability of the ammo. -Translation; it is a fluke to shoot better than that...

@DaBurntToaster Actually it's not. You can even find a tactical version in SOME stores. The laws are so sketchy here, some stores say NO tactical, some sell them lol. I live in Cali I know how it feels, but mini14 DOESN't suffer from the bullet button like the AR/AK guns. Altho, I like the ranch version, in a gun that can't compete with AR accuracy, i'll take the extra 2 inches of barrel over a lfash hider any day, a little extra velocity and a little extra accuracy. I like the Blued Synthetic

@irishScott2 In California you cant have a flashider only a muzzle break. The muzzle break also has to be permenately attached or clamped on since in California we cant have a threaded barrel of any kind.

So my first time shooting a long rifle more powerful than a 22 was a mini 14. Out of 20 rounds I hit all but 3 on a 1 square foot steel target 100 yards away. I don't know how impressive that really is, but I'm buying one in 1 month when I get the money. Got it on layaway.

Thank god for this gun, as a Canadian I can't own an ar or ak, no problem I will get this mofo instead, you just showed me I can hold my own with it. Too bad I can't get mags with more than 5 rounds in them, but if SHTF one day.... I can get bigger mags... Heck maybe I should hide some in a hole somewhere... I would get an sks but up here they weld some shit in the gun to limit the capacity, not something you can easy remedy.

Only problem I have with the video is that everyone is using scopes. Not reticle scopes but full high power magnification scopes. You don't use them in combat in the way they are using them. In fact, in close quarters the setups that they are using will get them killed.

Mini 14 are sooo underrated. Better for home defense than Ar's, excellent field results (takes to dirt, water, etc. well; with AR you might kill yourself), lighter, and easy to aim in close quarters. With green tip ammo, you can fight and win against a SWAT unit. Yes, Yes although accurate cannot beat AR at LONG ranges. But that is not where the fight happens. I really think people underestimate this weapon's defense value. In hand to hand, it is a better weapon to use than a cheap plastic AR.

@oeyesea Well, it looks like the Air Force guy has more practice in and has tweak his shooting style with mini. The Marine guy just begun his service and was shooting an AK. It's not like he was shooting with an M16 usually issued for the Marines. I think he would have to do couple of practice runs in before getting graded. If you want a more accurate results. You need to get three guys that know each one of those weapons very well and have the same experience to spar in my opinion.

@TheJaaysog I respect your opinion, but I have to disagree. I own a number of shotguns of varying gauge (bore) and several rifles that the ignorant class as "assault weapons." I consider them to be tools, nothing else. If used the way that I hope they always will be, they could be classed as sporting goods, and will pose no more danger to another human being than a bat or golf club. But I am willing to face the prospect of using them to protect my family from the predations of criminals.

Its worth mentioning that in China, illegal possession of a firearm rates the death penalty, yet there are mass shootings from time to time and shootings in relation to other crime. @mrdojob For most things, this is true. For any sort of politically charged subject, however, wikipedia becomes suspect. For example, the pages on Scientology, or Global Warming (with all due respect, the debate is NEVER over, on any subject) are known to be less than unbiased. Gun control is no less politically charged, and therefore any information there is bound to be suspect. Not wikipedia's fault, its just that its contributors (the public) tend to delete that which they dislike.

@nov284 I aint really noticed that much bias. Other more "trusted" and popular forms of info like the news, regular websites, newspapers often have far more bias in them due the only 1 person writing it and fitting it to their own agenda. Wikipedia on the other hand goes out of its way to tackle bias (even taging warnings on pages for bias) which almost no other source of info attempts. Its far harder to write what you like if you have to back it up on wiki.

As for references, they're fairly easy to come up with...its a sure thing some crackpot on the internet has taken any position possible on any subject you care to name. A good example is global warming. Wiki's GW page flatly states that 1) it's happening independent of any normal cycle of the earth and 2) It's manmade, even though there are huge natural sources of all greenhouse gasses.

@TheJaaysog Another thing to consider is that the vast majority of firearms related deaths in America are suicides, and there are multiple studies from across the globe that support the claim that if firearms aren't available a person will utilize another method for ending their own lives. Also, if you eliminate just 9 counties from the >5,300 in America, our crime rate falls below advertised European norms. Most of our crime is centered in and about a few major cities.

Per the reference to the lack of rails. I have mounted a set of Leapers G36 aluminum rails on the sides of my factory stock and it works great.
I have also developed my own magazine release to make changes ALMOST as fast as an AR. getting them in is still a trick, but the release is super fast.

@mcxznbv I've never had a chance to play with the mini, but I have an M1A. Basically, ARs have a single point of attachment for the magazine, giving it a lot of wiggle room once locked in. That's why ARs, even nominally reliable ones (never seen such a critter, but I've heard rumor) will jam if you try to rest the rifle on the mag while firing. Two point attachment, such as AKs, minis, and M1As use are much more stable and make for a more reliable weapon by eliminating one point of failure.

@nov284 i'm just saying, take the AK series (let's use the AKM as an example). the front of the magazine slips in, maybe a quarter inch. then you rotate the back up to lock it. the top of the magazine isn't in very far. the M1A especially, you have to life the magazine inside the gun, THEN lock it in. why not have it AK-style?

@mcxznbv I'm not very familiar with AKs, only in passing, but once you get used to the idea that it's okay to use a little force, M1As are very quick and easy to lock a mag into. The hook that holds the front half of the magazine in is the recoil spring guide, and it will press out of the way as you insert your magazine. So basically, if the mini is a similar style, I'd say it wouldn't be too bad at all, you know?

Nutn, I love your videos... I just have one question. It seems like testing these types of systems with the SH is pointless. If they use the same caliber round, your SH score is mainly due to just how well you shot on that particular run. If I were to test the XDm against the glock by a simulated combat run and gun, I could easily have a great run with the XD, and a bad run with the glock. Someone else could have the opposit outcome. Bottom line, table top reviews are more accurate.

@Glasgow1270 why post a video? facts are facts! if you're in a hot situation and the bad guy is sending lead at you, then you better be trained to send it back at him faster. he won't be sitting there like a static target waiting to get shot. i go to the range the first sunday of the month with some buddies. we try to get better at handling the steel and protecting ourselves. we don't film it for show and tell. but hey maybe you can run the camera for me next month. sounds like fun. lets do it
