Always, always, always craft your solo around arpeggios, especially when there's an ambiguous tonal center. Then, use neighbor notes when changing the harmony. Finally incorporate passing tones.
@plimbuff disagree with the first one. i think chords and arpeggios/broken chords are no better than eachother. Theyre just two different means to acquire particular textures. you can get incredible harmonic nuances via arpeggios rather than using block chords.
@DualThunder, perhaps you're confusing me with someone else.
I never said that block chords are "better" than arpeggios. I never said anything like that, nor do I believe that.
My clear point was that I think theorygeek00 gave bad advice when he said to ALWAYS use arpeggios in solos.
My point was that if you ALWAYS used arpeggios, then your solo's would lack variety. I then listed some techniques that would provide a different sound, such as BLOCK CHORDS.
I noticed that you don't understand what "block chords" are.
"Block Chords" are NOT the same as "chords".
A "chord" is ANY set 3 or more notes played simultaneously".
Where as, BLOCK CHORDS have the melody note on the top, with the other 3 notes positioned below it to create a 4 part harmonized melody, which move in unison with the melody note.
Block chords literally cannot be play as arpeggios, because they rely on a melody note to exist.
actually yeah, play roots with some added spice, becuase in this chord progression, the root notes are practically a melody themselves. and then in the b sections, start on b and go up chrormaticaly.
You can tell Bill Evans was inspired by Maurice Ravel.

@theorygeek00, there is a lot more to soloing than just arpeggios.
I think your advice of ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS using arpeggios is VERY BAD advice. It will make your solo's lack variety.
1)"Block chords" will provide a level of depth that can't be matched.
2) Using "Motifs" will provide context.
3) Using right hand "octaves" during a solo will dramatically increase the power of your notes.
Arpeggios are great, but it's a TERRIBLE idea to "ALWAYS, ALWAYS" use them.

@theorygeek00 erm, your confusing jazz solos with music of clayderman, hm?
Anoush23 1 year ago
@Anoush23, LOL you're SOOO right.
Clayderman is a master at overusing arpeggios.
He's also one of the best reasons to stay away from using tooo many arpeggios. HAHHA
I completely agree.
