Whitney Houston sounds better. Mariah's voice is nice but the problem is she just screams and yes it's great she can go high, but it doesn't sound good as it doesn't fit. Yes she has!!!! Shoreline theater in California.... She was the headliner and came out sang 1 and half song and it was done bad.... My friend and I were big Mariah fans at the time.... We were so disappointed that we booed with more then half the theater.

Whitney's tone is richer and crystal clear, she has better vocal control more soul and more power, plus she's more exciting. Her riffs, swoops, and headvoice are the best. Mariah has more range and a husky tone and is more agile with the whistle. Vocal quailty, it's Whitney for me...vocal acrobatics, then it's Mariah.

something distinct about her and the riffs and etc really became extras that amplified her tone. technically she is an amazing vocalist but in terms of vocal gift (tone) Whitney wins. it wouldn't have mattered if Whitney didn't hit notes out of her range or tried some intricate riff she would still be amazing because of the way her voice just sounds.

Whitney Houston sounds better. Mariah's voice is nice but the problem is she just screams and yes it's great she can go high, but it doesn't sound good as it doesn't fit. Like she'll sing normally thne just do a high pitched scream, is there really a purpose of doing so? it sounds pointless and as if she's just one of these 'look at me i can do this note' singers. Where as Whitney just sings everything gracefully here.

Whitney's tone is richer and crystal clear, she has better vocal control more soul and more power, plus she's more exciting. Her riffs, swoops, and headvoice are the best. Mariah has more range and a husky tone and is more agile with the whistle. Vocal quailty, it's Whitney for me...vocal acrobatics, then it's Mariah.

something distinct about her and the riffs and etc really became extras that amplified her tone. technically she is an amazing vocalist but in terms of vocal gift (tone) Whitney wins. it wouldn't have mattered if Whitney didn't hit notes out of her range or tried some intricate riff she would still be amazing because of the way her voice just sounds.

@MrFutureseer I think Mariah and Whitney are very similar.. or were, at least. Mariah used to sing with power but, due to the constant comparisons with WH, she sung more naturally (which turned out to be healthier on her voice).
Personally, I think Mariah has better upper belts - they're more effortless and well rounded - but I respect your opinion.

@MrFutureseer Mariah's melismatic riffs and runs are in another league. You've got it twisted. She doesn't just have range. Her voice is the most fluid voice, perhaps, in the history of music. Then there is the swiftness. Her runs and riffs are faster and better placed than anyone else. Then there is the musical ear. Where whitney does ridiculously powerful belts and head notes(in every song), mariah sings horribly treacherous melodies in the high register. No one can do those melodies.

When she first began she sung in full voice without much flaws in her singing. However not much time progressed when you could tell when her voice became weak. @MrFutureseer it all comes down to technique. It's unbelievable but mariah seems to have forgotten how to produce her former glorious sound. Then again, she goes and does the occasional stellar performance where she sounds as good as the 90s. When asked about it, she says 'I rested'. Maybe it's psychological, maybe it's not - maybe her nodules DO restrict her chords, causing her to raise the larynx. I fully admit she's started to sound really horrible now - even in studio.

Whitney and Mariah are the best in the business but let's face it..it's Whitney then Mariah as far as singing...early nineties on back..whitney was a powerhouse soprano..listen to those songs and you folks who say she doesn't have range will see that it's there..even now with a deeper voice she's still a better singer..but we love Mariah Carey too but Whitney is the truth..tell you what listen to both divas versions of the star spangled banner

@DeVron83 Whitney's range actual isn't so amazing when it comes to her competition with Diva's like Mariah (Mariah has a 4-5 octave voice and Whitney has a 3.5 octave voice) but her voice is sooooo FANTASTIC.

Most ppl think Mariah is better because she can "supposedly" sing higher...Truth: Those whistles are just squeaks she learned to control. She's not even the best whistler! Whitney's voice is like a combination of Michael Jackson and Aretha Franklin.Whitney voice is a different kind of voice. Her singing is effortless and with so much strength. Her voice sounds like 1000 angels along with a GIANT humming bird. Mariah is great too but Whitney is on another level.
