  • Thanks for posting this, 6funswede. I will be purchasing the dvd for my grandchildren. Brilliant observations like Tom Lehrer's must be passed down.

  • what a wanker. pistonheads is SHIT

  • Who was he referring to when he said 'just to use on you know who'? I'm too stupid for Lehrer.

  • @DrEthanAsia1

Taking wild guess I would say thats gotta be Israel.

  • America loves peace????? correct me if am wrong but they are the only nation who have actually used it on people

  • @jimmy2k4o Well the US were not exactly against a peace-loving nation itself when thy dropped the bomb over Japan. Just to stop a flame war, let's say no nation is ever 100% peace-loving.

  • @romanlegions no offence mate if your american but ad say the US is the furthest away from a peace loving nation you can possibly get, my nation Scotland is peace loving we have only been in one war in our history and that was for our own independence, iraq afganistan libya falklin islands don't count for us because we were dragged into it by the English you would have a very hard time finding a Scotsman who is for the current wars, we ARE 100% peace loving as are many many other nations

  • @jimmy2k4o Cont...wise. People often see the term "warmongering" associating with invasion and such. I'm no great defender of the US but the wars they have been in was reactionary of events. And you define the US as non-peace loving people. What of the anti-war demonstrations of the 60-70s and now with the Afghanistan and Iraq war? The only reason the US has been involved in lots of wars is because their capabilities to project power over long distances. If Scotland was to have that same power

  • @romanlegions with people who haven't done any proper research into it and can't wait to label me a parranoid conspiracy wacko, frankly for them the idea that they are behind it seem to be too much for some people to handle so they don't even open their minds a fraction of a mm to take a real look at the evidence or the logical reason why 9/11 actually worked in the bush administrations favor....

  • @jimmy2k4o Cont 2...status as America, they would do the same because it is inevitable to do so, such is the concept of "Realpolitik" in international studies. Also, it is dependent on who's viewpoint in warmongering, I'm pretty sure that people in England during the times of Cromwell saw Scotland as warmongers, and William Wallace was not an exactly...pleasant character in history.

  • @romanlegions With all do respect mate Wallace and Robert the bruce put an end to all the theft rape and murder that English soldiers were doing north of the border wallace was a great man stood up for his country whne they were being oppressed, also you may say the wars america enters into was just reactions, not quite the attack in the gulf of tonkin which started the vietnam war has turned out to be fiction and don't even get me started on how 9/11 was clearly an act of the U.S goverment

  • @romanlegions also mate when i said how america is a war hungry nation and frankly a rather immoral one also i was meaning their government not their citizenry so the protests don't really matter to my point even tho i do respect them, search on youtube "boston legal speech on america" a clip i think perfectly encompasses how immoral and sometimes evil america can be, alos if you don't believe what i said about 9/11 please don't start a debate with me about it i've got into so many with

  • @jimmy2k4o Well~, I see that your views clashes greatly with mine, especially on the 9/11 debate. But since I just emerged from a previous flame war, I don't want to get involve in another one just as quickly. So i bid you good night.

  • @romanlegions Peace is relative, and I'm Australian. Obviously that no country is willing to go to war for the sake of it, though there are a few individuals who I can count that does do that. Its inevitable;e for war to do happen, and I'm no professor at Scottish history, but you are just looking at the term "peace" from a rather narrow perspective. I'm pretty sure the ancient hillsmen and clansmen of Scotland would've waged war at one another that would've been much more destructive population

  • When are South Africa and Indonesia going to get theirs? South Africa is united, Indonesia is getting better.

  • we have trident : )

  • ooh flame wars

  • ''Eeeegypt's gooonna geeet oonee tooo juuust too uuusee oon YOU KNOW WHO''

I've almost fallen off the chair laughing...

  • It's amazing - and sad - how little any of his satire has dated, even if a few names need to be changed occasionally.

  • LIBYA is being bombed right now as i write this - Obama is a total hypocrite - he is bombing Pakistan on a daily basis along with Iraq & Afghanistan - what about a no fly zone over the US or UK or FRANCE!!!

Shame on you Obama - give back your Peace prize - shame on you Sarkozy & shame on you David Cameron you digusting mass murderers.........

Tom Lehrer has more guts than all of you - he is a free and real man who has been exposing your murderous agenda is message will live on forever

  • @InTheStars1000 Come on. Don't ruin a perfectly good Lehrer song by inciting argument.

Anyways, whether or not you're right, posting on youtube isn't going to help. Try a political forums.

  • @othesemo - Im not arguing, i simply made a statement agreeing with his song and answering the question 'who's next?' - and i will point out to you that its a political song as you have no intelligence left in your troll brain....look at your page - people are sick of people like you and your fake pages - its you who are afraid to speak out against war......you get off this page - you get off youtube if you have nothing to add to the good of the community - this is no place for dumb silence

  • @InTheStars1000

It's a political song written in the 60's. I doubt it was intended to bash Obama. Anyways, I can't speak for Lehrer's intentions. Neither can you.

Also, trolling is the posting of inflammatory remarks for the purpose of derailing a thread or comment board. I attempted to prevent further inflammatory remarks, such as the two that you have just posted, in the hope that no ill would come of them.

And whether or not I approve of the war is irrelevant; this is music, not a rant.

  • @othesemo and InTheStars1000: The songs are satirical comedy songs, written almost 50 years ago. But of course many of the songs are still relevant. You should both click on my (stupid) 6funswede user name -- the channel is Lehrer only -- and enjoy the live version of "Send the Marines".

  • someone needs to add the iran verse

  • @wadyano

Iran also wants a bomb "just to use on you know who" , so nothing new will be in Iran verse :)

  • egypts gonna get one too just to use on YOU KNOW WHO

    lmfao

    LOL >__<

  • Dude, I learned this in Social, and it actually still applies to us today in one way or another.

  • 0:00 <---- Replay Button !

  • so hat jemand bedarf mit mir zu texten oder bilder tausch mir ist so langweilig

  • I want to actually hear the alternate lyric: Japan will get it's own device, transistorized at half the price.

  • Myanmar, aka Burma!

  • 13 people didn't get the bomb

  • Love his satire!!!!

  • but ajust incase we better get a bomb!

  • I wonder how many hate-messages he got back then :/

    totally love him!

  • @Namantos, well, truth be told, not that many. The reason, of course, was that Lehrer was never invited to do prime-time radio or TV shows in the United States. But I can assure you that for the first two years on YouTube (2007-2009) there were quite a few "not-so-nice" messages, because suddenly Lehrer's songs were easy to find for people who don't exactly love his stuff. None of these messages were forwarded to Lehrer, because he is not interested in "fan mail".

  • @6funswede -- Maybe I'm getting older, but I am sure that I first saw Tom Lehrer on That Was the Week that Was when I was a teenager. And I loved his sardonic wit so relevant to the time. The issues remain but no satirist can compare to Lehrer.

  • @isisorion1

I was going to remind us, Americans, that he was on tv. I was a child, 9 yo, and that was my favorite show at the time, though I don't remember any specific story, song, or person.

6funswede was in Europe so probably didn't know that Lehrer was on American tv. Alan Alda was also on TW3 which was a US version of the British show. Lasted just one season here, I believe.

  • @Namantos Why would he get hate messages?!

  • @0Edward0Cullen0, ask the people who wrote them, i.e. people in the U.S. who hates "Send the Marines" or "The Vatican Rag" or "Wernher von Braun". Click on the (stupid) user name "6funswede" and watch/hear the songs yourself.

  • @6funswede We all have to laugh at ourselves once in a while. Lehrer's one of the best satirists out there, and unlike other critics of one's respective organisations/nation/profession, he doesn't go foaming at the mouth.

I've got to get the whole collection....

  • @6funswede I'm in the U.S. and I love Tom Lehrer. Satire always offends people too dumb to get it.

  • @0Edward0Cullen0 well, I doubt people at a certain time in history liked hearing provocative songs, coz it is kinda provocating, yet still so very very true in a funny sort of way

  • @Namantos nah. people understood a joke. they knew that he was just making a joke. now everything said is taken seriously

  • Amazing text considering the age - but oh so true... Wish it wasn't, though...

  • but thats ok cause we love peace :DDDDD

  • But just in case--

  • @herzogsbuick let's get a bomb!

  • I remeber when my country (sweden) actually wanted to get one and tried xD but we gave up that idea later xD which sucks >_> i want a bomb >:

  • Was he able to see into the future?

  • @CrazyShakaZulu, well it certainly seems ike that. "Who's Next" (from the album "That Was The Year That Was") was released in 1965, but the song must have been written in 1964. I'm not objective here, but, to me, a certain sign of genius is the ability to predict or "foresee" and also the ability to write a topical comedy song that you'll wish to hear more than once (even 50 years later).

  • @CrazyShakaZulu No he just didn't spend his time on youtube watching videos of people falling down. He actually studied and did research.

  • @IPossessAHugePenis, well, YouTube wasn't even a vision when "Who's Next" was written, possibly in 1964. And Tom Lehrer is first and foremost an academic; a respectable mathematician and a university lecturer who also happens to be interested in politics AND who wrote (maybe) fifty priceless comedy songs in the 1950's and 1960's. To learn more, click on my (rather stupid) user name.

  • Tom Lehrer is an American treasure.

  • @planetilex, thank you!

  • xD But just in case, we better get a bomb!

  • I heard that Lehrer gave up writing satirical songs after Henry Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize - he said that life itself had become satire and that there was no point in writing songs about it!

  • I kind of wish he'd written a soundtrack to Dr Strangelove...one area the film (maybe) could have been improved...they should play this and 'We shall all go together when we go' at the start of UN sessions. They could do with lightening up the self-important snorefests with a whimsical dose of realism.

  • In lieu of today's conversation about our nuclear arms race, here is an interesting video/song from Tom Lehrer. Enjoy! no, really.... Who's Next?

  • who is next ??

  • wow, fits perfect even today.

  • great perception : )

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Great lyrics.

  • nvrmnd found it on the internet. sweeeeet... tom lehrer is the real deal.

  • i would like to know the chord progression of this song. trying to figure it out, keys keep changing by half a step before each verse. Pretty cool.

  • 1:01 THE BEST!

  • everything will come on doneeeeeeeeeee......

when iran gets the bomb. who's next.

  • Wakko Warner asked Santla Clause (His misspelling, not mine) for a bomb for Christmas.

You Tube search 'animaniacs noel' should get you there.

  • Fantastic

  • I bet Dr. Strangelove is high up on Tom Lehrers list of favorite movies.

  • I bet the creators of Dr. Strangelove have Tom Lehrer high up on their lists as well.

  • Ha ha, yes :-)

  • @8080256256 well, Wernher von Bruan was told to be to inspiration for Dr. Strangelove himself...

  • 2012 is the data that Portugal will have the bomb

  • We in Alabama need a bomb

  • btw Zirror its nice to know someone who knows their phobias ^_^

I got A tom lehrer CD with most of his song on it, lucky me ^_^. He really is a super smart sadistic song writer!

    Try saying that 5times fast

  • Trysayingthat5timesfast

    Trysayingthat5timesfast

    Trysayingthat5timesfast

    Trysayingthat5timesfast

    Trysayingthat5timesfast

I don't know what was so hard about it. :(

  • he is i know!

  • He's a genius!

  • All the twelve Tom Lehrer songs from this channel have now been republished in better quality. Click the Lehrer icon or the username, go to the channel and select one of the uploaded HQ-versions :-) Don't forget to click the HQ-buttion.

  • looks like michael buckley

  • He did not think of India and Pakistan.

Note also that many countries like Germany have nuclear stockpiles but deny that it has a military purpose.

All in all about 10-20 coubtries could throw a nuclear bomb if they would like to.

And it's going to be more the coming years.

It is a genuie we can never get into the bottle again.

All we can do is pray that it will not get out of its bottle in our life time, but one day it will.

Like a Vulcano that is inactive, but may burst out any time.

  • Germany has no nuclear weapons. The only nuclear weapons that are stationed in germany belong to the United States.

  • What do you think is a "Verdsuchsreaktor zur Atomareicherung".

    A clue:

You need special ptutonium only for weapons.

You say officially you dont have them, but...

in 15 minutes a bomb is made.

That is how Germany's nuclear state is since the 1950's.

And a lot of German nuclear scientsits are "monitoring" US or French tests.

In reality, they look how to make it just in case.

  • Germany has no Versuchsreaktor zur Atomanreicherung, germany even gets their nuclear material from france all together.

You are a little germanophobic, are you not?

  • I want a bomb too.

    Trust me...

  • Do you want to share one then?

  • I wonder what ol' Tom thinks these days. I mean, what with all this warfare in Iran/Iraq/Afghanistan because of a bomb scare like.. jeepers forever ago, and him having written a song like this very prematurely. It just goes to show that not only does history repeat itself, only the select few learn from it.

  • they asked him about today, if he could write satire about the current state of affairs (this was during Bush) and he said no, pretty much that it's cruel to make fun of people that stupid.

  • Haha, that's actually pretty kind of him. Besides, satire these days just wouldn't be the same.. I mean, not only do we have a huge number of comedians attempting to do the same thing, the world's in such a sad state of affairs that people like Tom Lehrer would never sleep!

  • the israel part is THE best

  • comedic genius

"the lord is our shephard says the psalms, but just incase we better get a bomb" best part by far lol

  • does anyone have the sheets to this song??

  • Does anyone know where these videos were recorder??

  • I think the egypt part is the best.

    And yes, tom was/is jew.

  • Even if you renounce your faith, you're still a Jew.

  • The Israel part is the best!!

    Tom was Jewish, right?

  • IS Jewish

  • He's dead, right? Like Bill Cosby?

  • Hell no he's still alive :D

  • And Bill Cosby is still alive as well!

  • Wtf are you talking about...

  • Kind of a "karate kid meets george carlin" moment if one was me and the other could sing.

  • Can any one figure out thetabs for this???

  • ugh i should have figured that out, but thanks!

  • who is "you know who" from :50

  • Upper9T, I guess "you know who" is Israel. Egypt and Israel weren't exactly friendly in the old days when this song was written :-)

  • "weren't"? The last couple years of relative friendliness are an anomaly.

  • well that is the question

  • dude is my IDOL!!! Brilliant, did he really have a PHD in mathmatics???

  • he was a Harvard professor lol

  • IS. he isnt dead lol. he is still teaching :)

  • No, Lehrer is retired. I don't think he lectures anymore. But he is alive and well and awake, and reclusive. He is nice, and he said OK to the videos but he doesn't like attention :-)

  • "he doesn't like attention :-) "

He shouldn't have been so brilliant then ;)

Just kidding of course. I hope he has everything he wants out of life, even privacy.

  • Well, he might've been a professor, but he never got a PhD in mathematics :) He got better things in mind, he did get a masters tho :)

  • Egyptian-voice was AWESOME!

  • oh, so fresh!

  • actually S. Africa helped Israel to make their own nuclear bomb(s) but South Africa has since voluntarily dismantled and renounced its nuclear arsenal, and converted the uranium from their bombs back to reactor grade uranium for civilian use.

  • this song is great!!!

  • genious ! :D

  • Airhockeylirare, ja, det är väl bara att tacka och ta emot. Vad kul att du gillar Tom Lehrer. Sköt om dig!

  • The last thing we want is for Alabama to get a bomb!

  • Well, I'd rather have Bob Riley's finger on the figurative button than George Wallace's! And I lived in Alabama from 1977 to 2007.

  • LMAO Egypt and Israel parts are the best!

  • imma get one

  • My favorite Lehrer son. Excellent!

  • wow. all these songs are true and goofy..they are true right?

  • South Africa had nuclear weapons during Apartheid, but has disarmed its nuclear weapons.

  • yeah they were never declared but some little island near them just "randomly" blew up and South Africa was very fast to cry "EARTHQUAKE!!! NOTHING ELSE JUST AN EARTHQUAKE"

  • Comment removed

  • Alabama was unsuccessful in building a bomb. Apparently, they shunned modern science in favor of "Intelligent Fission". Their atomic weaponry consisted mainly of bottles of holy water tied together with dynamite. The weapons were responsible for several ruined paintjobs along the Alabama/Georgia border.

  • LOL i actuly lol wen i read that is well funnie lol

  • *applauds* nice one dude.

  • You'll be the next Tom Lehrer.

  • Good thing the Brits didn't teach them how to make "The Holy Hand grenade." From what movie? anyone? anyone? Bueller?

  • MONTY PYTHON AND THE QUEST FOR THE HOLY GRAIL!!! hehe I love that movie!!! '1,2,5' '3 sir' '3'... *Hallelujah* *BOOM*

  • 3 shall be the number of thy counting, and the number of thy counting shall be three. 2 thou shall not count, unless thou proceedeth directly to three....

    and so on....

  • 1, 2, 5!

Wow, Monty Python and Ferris Bueller references. Can we squeeze any more in here?

  • ni!

  • this song isnt dead, its just sleeping!

  • "Intelligent Fission" is when you put a worm on a hook and it has the sense to go into the water where God meant it to be!

  • Who's next?

  • The Vatican, maybe?

  • Great lyrics

  • brilliant, i used this song for an english assignment. Thankyou for the upload, and the great songs of the great Tom Lehrer.

  • Haha, this is hilarious. I love the "The lord is our shepherd says the psalm, but just in case, we'd better get a bomb".

    Lehrer is prime political satire.

  • who is egypt going to use on?

  • The implication is Israel.

  • He rhymes it with "Jews" and the part after says Israel is getting tense... =/

  • The implication at the time Lehrer wrote this song was Israel. However, since the Camp David Accords in 1979, the likelihood of that has been reduced.

  • omg this song is so awesome

  • has anyone the sheets for this song?

  • still apply's today this song so amazing.

  • I think Iran is Next.........But im not too sure if the Americans are there yet,i heard a few troops were dropped in Iran, but im not sure, becasue the ones that told me this were Americans, and they were pissed Drunk, you can Guess who was Serving them....:-),but if Iran has it,i dont think Americans would be moving in that fast.

  • The U.S. had the bomb first! Read your history! We dropped two nukes on Japan to end World war II. There has been no other combat use of nuclear weapons since then.

  • sorry you are replying to the wrong question!

  • you remember a place that used to be called "Australia", the most recent nuclear bomb dropping in an act of violence, in 1997.

  • When did that happen? And who did it? When we nuked Japan, it was all over the papers.

  • lol, it was a joke, ha ha funny right? Australia...

  • ...just to use on you know who...

  • Witty. Lehrer rules

  • Only A Matter of Time Before "We will all go together when we go"

  • Yes, the LHC! Let's hope they don't fire it up until after the vacations.

  • Oh, Thats What He Was Singing About? I Thought It Was About Doing Stuff "Together" With People You Care About.

  • I haven't heard his songs since I was in college when a friend had his live album -- "1965 The Year That Was".

The Alabama reference is interesting -- I always took it to mean the Crimson Tide; because of course back then Bear Bryant was nationally considered to have the best perennial national power -- and think what they could have achieved with "the bomb". And now days, the Alabama reference could be construed to have quite a different connotation.

    Anyway, Great Song!

  • Nah, the Alabama reference is about their reluctant "paticipation" in the Civil Rights Movement, where most of the major "battles" were fought. In 1961 and 1962, I got to walk to school nearby; In '63, I had to ride a bus accross town to "achieve racial integration". From what I've heard, a lot of native Germans think Hitler was a Great Man, and there's a simila sentiment in Bama about Gov George Wallace

  • You're probably right. But it's a lot more fun to listen to (and a lot funnier to laugh at) when I picture Bear Bryant's team with the A-bomb!

  • SO INCREDIBLY AMAZING!!!!!!!

    i love this guy!!!!

    he was truely a genius
