I have been out of work at points of my life, I have to tell you that in a culture where the first thing you do when you meet a new person is ask or get asked what you do for a living having to say that you're between jobs or out of work can be deeply embarrassing. He's not saying that anyone SHOULD feel that they don't have dignity when they lose a job, but it is true that people DO feel that way. This is the fair way to take what he's saying but you don't seem too interested in fairness.
