"A 16th century hunting lodge in Portugal, where Elizabeth Feryn and I stayed for a week. Within the lodge was a courtyard, marked at each corner by orange trees. The feel of the place reminded me of the Unicorn tapestries which hang in The Cloisters in New York City. The tapestries and the lodge are both rich with earthly,Pre-Christian iconography - depicting the mysterious life and death cycle of the seasons. It was in this courtyard that this piece was conceived." Music inspired in Portugal.
and please people, stop with the religious debates. It's like smearing a diamond with mud. Just enjoy the song, whether you're an atheist / spiritual / religious / etc.
I was biking home today and this song came on my iPod. It was quite sunny but a cold wind was bringing a taste of autumn and the atmosphere was so magical because of the song. It made me bike in slow motion. It also somehow reminds me of childhood, though I don't know why. Back when life was so simple and enjoyable.
Holy crap! How did we go from listening to this beautiful music to grossly misstating historical facts? Looks like satan is doing his job. Inserting hateful, uneducated biggots and racists into something that should be sacred and full of peace and love. Peace be with you all and blessed be.

I read a message on another Loreena music video that slammed religion in general. I left a civil (and I think thoughtful) reply, and someone left a rude comment about religion being discussed at all - said it ruined the video. Loreena's music isn't 'religious" but it sure is spiritual - and many people, Catholic, Pagan, whatever, sense this and comment on it. Loreena did so herself re: "Dark Night of the Soul". I love her music, which speaks to the heart, and for some, the soul. Both valid.
Interesting fact: The inquisition was targeted only at people who attempted to undermine Church teaching and at false converts, not people who professed other faiths. Since it was under Church jurisdiction it was considered better than being handed over to secular authorities and less brutal. And yes, it was initiated in part by Isabella and Fernando because they were still reclaiming Spain from Muslim rule and hunting out false Muslim converts.
But they considered people who professed other faiths to be undermining the Catholic faith. They would burn people alive. The Inquisition got rid of many valuable Jewish scholars and Muslim doctors. Having books about science was undermining the church, and could lead to a public burning. I dunno. I find that pretty brutal.
The things you say happened only in certain times and places. Catholic history is huge.
Only a few thousand people were burned by the Inquisition, mostly in late 15th century Spain. And it wasn't the Church who controlled the Spanish Inquisition, it was the Spanish monarchy.
As for science, scientific books never led to burning. Only 2 (Bruno and Galileo) ever got in trouble with the Church about science. 2 in 2000 years.
A few missteps in 2000 years of world history, are bound to happen.
Take for instance the relations between Catholics and Jews. You say that Catholics considered Jews to undermine the Catholic faith and burned them. But this happened only in late 15th century Spain. In most Catholic countries Jews were tolerated. Even in the Pope's own states. In some instances the Church even protected Jews from persecutions.
My point is, don't just take the worst of the very long and complex history of Catholicism.
Yeah I know. Did you read my other posts. I already said I didn't mean to sound anti-Catholic and I recognize there are missteps in every religion. And I will say again...religion would be perfect if it werent for it's followers. Peace be upon you.
catholic history is huge, and profoundly corrupt. Ever read about the first crusade? How the Pope ordered 8000 jews murdered prior to the launch of the first crusade? Then got their properties and money? Ever heard of the Albigensian Crusade? The Pope and King of France? Estimated over 1 million people murdered? Heard about the collusion of the catholic church in Germany and the Nazis?
No eternal reward will ever save the catholic church for the amount of blood she has on her hands.
@trippintonk Oh come the Nazis and Catholics? Ya because Hitler held a fucking knife to their throats throughout the war. Many Catholics risked their lives in order to save Jews....what utter bs
Read up on your history before you issue proclamations of BS. The truth of the catholic church's collusion with the nazis is sickening. While a very FEW catholics risked their lives to protect the jews, (several were actually imprisoned or executed) the vast majority did not.
Well if the Jews weren't money hungry fanatics, cold blooded murderers and hadn't started false propaganda about Hitler and the Germans then I MIGHT have a small little iddy bitty bit of sympathy for them. As it were they murdered countless upon countless of Germans and that hasn't even been mentioned.
So... go pope at this point.
Oh and the Jews STOLE Jeruselum, just so we're clear on that :)
@BoereBitch Right, don't wanna get involved in the argument, but the Jews founded Jerusalem didn't they? (by all means correct me if I'm wrong) and when and how did they kill countless Germans? Surely that would have been a huge historical point?
Now actually they didn't ^_^ common mistake though, unless you believe that the Jews are the rightful people of God. God gave Jerusalem to his people which were the 'Judah tribe. (sorry I know it as stam) The Jews killed thousands of Germans, but Germany took too long to get back on its feet after the war, which gave the Jews enough time spread Propaganda and thus denying most of their crimes and demanding millions of dollars from them. They broke Germany through lies not war.
@BoereBitch Where the heck do you get Germany from? The only time Germany has ever had anything to do with the Jews was WWII, and that was a massacre of Jews, homosexuals, Rroma, and etc, along with a good number of Germans to boot. Jerusalem, which WAS built by the Jews because they ARE the tribe of Judah, has only ever been fought over by Christians and Muslims during the Crusades (well, and now). Where exactly have you gotten your information? Enlighten me, if I'm so blind.
OKay I just reread my post and it sounded really anti-catholic and rash. I'm sorry.
To all of us: Let's just forget politics and history and enjoy this for what it is. A beautiful song that makes us feel good. That's all that matters.
Apology accepted- but I think you should read some reliable scholars from that period before you go into anti-Catholic phillippics. As the chief entity responsible for formation and preservation of learning and science in the West, a little respect would be in order. And again, it was directed at heretics inside the Church, not apostates! There were no doubt abuses of authority, but that's true of every institution, religious and secular.
I'm not trying to be anti-Catholic, I think it's a beautiful religion. Argeed, there are always abuses of authority in every religion, and I think that for any of us to really know, we had to be there. There are biases, even from scholars during that period. As one man once said "Religion would be absolutely perfect, if it weren't for the followers."
Hey, I loved that last sentence. I've always said my biggest problem with religion was it's followers. That's so cool. I've never heard anyone else express that before. Thanks!
@madihwa I can agree to a point. The biggest problem is they're taught to follow the same teachings regardless of change in the world and decry anyone different to them, so I prefer spirituality :D
The Inquisition was Spanish. It may have been initiated by Isabel, princess of Castilla and Fernando of Aragon (their alliance marked the founding of "Spain"), but the Itialian Pope endorsed it. And, thus, it is on the hands of the Catholic church even still. People were literally totured and killed, mostly Jews and Muslims. Their so-called 'lack of faith' was the poor excuse used to exile them from Spain.
However, none of this should invalidate someone's faith or give leave to disrespect.
It is funny, as christianity is an elastic ever changing animal. There is no one bible that always said and depicted the same case. It was used, as many religions before, as a means to control the masses, as today is consumerism. Happy lovey dovey christianity did not exist then
I think there's a strong streak of Paganism even in Christian music. Some of the best loved Christmas carols are Irish and Welsh, and have a mystical feel to them.
In fact, I don't think they can really trace Irish music any further back than the 11th century when they were Christian.
The deeds of the Inquisiton was only reformist anti-catholic propaganda. There was a court called Inquisiton, but it's role was only to investigate cases when an individual severly disobeyed the Bible. In case of guilt, the said individual was simply expelled from the church, but if during the investigation they find evidence that actual crime was committed, they handed to the authorities where they usually executed in a fashion the current age prefers. I.e: The Inquisiton did not kill anyone.
yeah, it was also initiated by the Monarchy, not the Church. It used Catholic morality as a basis for persecution, the whole thing was the farthest thing from "Christian-ness" that I know of. Apparently nobody realized that they weren't practicing any form of "forgiveness" or "love thine enemy" or they just didn't want to say anything.
Obviously, either you are a revisionist or you don't know what you're talking about. The Inquisition and the Santo Ofício are well documented in Portuguese History. What do you think an Auto-de-Fé was? A happy religious celebration?
You were very quick to judge. The Nazi example you used was really a bad way to make a point (whatever the heck it is) Do you remember a little number The catholics did called the Inquisition? Lets not point fingers and argue, lets enjoy the music.
Who cares what religion she belongs to. What matters is the quality of the work/music that she produces. They are insanely beautiful. I'm not Christian or Catholic but I listen to those types of music every now and then because they are beautiful, same with Loreena's songs.
djBlastalot - The Dark Ages are not the same as Medieval times, otherwise known as The Middle Ages. Only the Early Middle Ages (roughly 500AD-1000AD) are synonymous with The Dark Ages. However other sources may state that The Late Dark Ages actually ended with the year 1066 and thus The Middle Ages began right there, which is in lines with early English education - that traditionally The Middle Ages began in 1066, when French blood assumed the English throne.
I agree, Briar and Lengel. The Dark Age is a fascinating era and those who are interested should read the article in Wikipedia to have more details, as I did. (See also the Britannica). Happy New Year to all of you
Nonsense. The "dark ages" were a time of wonderful blossoming and creativity. Look beyond modern prejudices and see the SOUL of the times. A truly mystical age. Loreena understands and appreciates this in her music.
Some people call Loreena a witch. I do somewhat agree with them. Her songs are her spells, the lyrics her incantations. From the first word, they ensnare you by the heart and draw you into thier blessing. Her songs almost always make me cry. I don't know why. They just have some...power about them, that draws the emotions out of people. Sing on, Dear Lady. May your voice never falter.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I would never call Loreena McKennit a witch! She's actually very religious, haven't you heard some of her songs?! She always hints things or refers to 'Our Lord' or, if not that, then her entire songs are about Christ, Mary or some other heavenly figure...some of her songs are refering to historicl things but I would definitely NOT call her a witch, she comes from one of those strick, large families that are really religious....I think they would burn her at stake :P
Wow. You are a perfect example of people who are so narrow minded that they cannot think past their own ears. I wholeheartedly support religion, but if it blinds you from everything else as in your case, I must say... it makes me rather sad.
I don't understand your comment. You must like her music, but you won't like it if she is a pagan?
That's like saying you don't like Handel's Messiah because you're not Christian.
Loreena McKennitt's music has a mystical quality that should allow your mind to imagine anything when listening to it. Open your mind, you might surprise yourself.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What do you mean you don't understand? I'm Catholic and I find Wicca and Paganism offensive to my Faith as do MANY religions and Christian denominations. Hence, Why would I support an artist who is clearly a threat to my religion? For example, if you lived during WWII and really loved this singer who was a nazi, would YOU still support that singer?
It's your mentality that I don't understand. And your Nazi analogy is a political one not religious.
Pagan religions were practised before Christianity. They can be folk religions and more spiritual in there practise than Christianity I don't understand how you can feel threatened by another religion. Maybe you're confused about what Paganism is. Maybe you're insecure in your knowledge of your own religion. Again, I say open your mind. This is nothing other than beautiful music.
Only the things you do can offend your faith. Thats why it's YOUR FAITH. You being Catholic means you follow Catholic teachings, now leave everyone else alone.
Actually I agree with DruidRobur, the only references to christian figures are in songs that were originally written by christians. She also sings about Beltaine, and Samhain *on Parallel Dreams" and the Green Knight on and All Souls Night on "The Visit" a lot of her songs whether Christian or Pagan are deeply spiritual. And just a note: Loreena was raised in the United Church of Canada which is very open minded and accepting of different beliefs. I'm assuming that is why she sings about so many
She also sings 'The Dark Night of the Soul' which is a Catholic poem/book and in the cd booklet that includes her notes along the road of her travels she expresses her fascination with the monks of a place in Italy and her attending Mass
amabilis77 Loreena is not pagan, she is identified as Christian. Of the United (or is it Unitarian? I'm not sure) Church of Canada. You needn't worry. Just enjoy the music, like the rest of us Buddhists, Wiccans, Jews, Hindus, atheists, followers of Zenu, even Klingons.
Why people comparing Lorena and Jan voices, how can you compare two perfect and unique voices, two state of art, I'm so sorry for those of you and hope some day you will get it ;)
Jan Werner has a powerful voice and his high tenor does a good job on the song but the best you can say in comparing it to Loreena is that it's different and Jan has his own interpretation. IMO his version is very inferior. Don't mistake technical vocal tricks like note-bending or sliding, which he overuses, for "feeling." Jan performs the song, Loreena really feels it and understands it, that's why most covers don't match the original.
So hauntingly beautiful it hurts! The chorus of this song truly takes me beyond time and space. It's as if all the beauty, wonder, enchantment, melancholy, and sadness of this world exist in one single melody. Work of a musical genius!
and in a corner stood a pomegranate tree with wild flowers there no mortal eye could see yet still some mystery befalls sure as the cock crows at morn the world in stillness keeps the secret of babes t obe born i heard an old voice say "don't go far from the land the seasons have their way no mortal can understand."
wherein the deep night sky the stars lie in its embrace the courtyard still in its sleep and peace comes over your face "come to me," it sings "hear the pulse of the land the ocean's rhythms pull to hold your heart in its hand." and when the wind draws strong across the cypress trees the nightbirds cease their songs so gathers memories. last night you spoke of a dream where forests stretched to the east and each bird sang its song a unicorn joined in a feast
genius of weaving the magic of music. love you loreena, so glad you stayed true to your calling in life and pursued music. you've given us all so so much, you will never imagine :)
Nice to hear such beauty and talent. Absolutely outstanding song.

Stholm1 2 years ago
yeah, it was also initiated by the Monarchy, not the Church. It used Catholic morality as a basis for persecution, the whole thing was the farthest thing from "Christian-ness" that I know of. Apparently nobody realized that they weren't practicing any form of "forgiveness" or "love thine enemy" or they just didn't want to say anything.
F0reseer 2 years ago
Obviously, either you are a revisionist or you don't know what you're talking about. The Inquisition and the Santo Ofício are well documented in Portuguese History. What do you think an Auto-de-Fé was? A happy religious celebration?

You were very quick to judge. The Nazi example you used was really a bad way to make a point (whatever the heck it is) Do you remember a little number The catholics did called the Inquisition? Lets not point fingers and argue, lets enjoy the music.

Who cares what religion she belongs to. What matters is the quality of the work/music that she produces. They are insanely beautiful. I'm not Christian or Catholic but I listen to those types of music every now and then because they are beautiful, same with Loreena's songs.
gerlygerl 2 years ago 4
The Visit is the probable best Loreena´s work. The whole CD is sublime. This music make me want cry.
I heard an old voice say
"Don't go far from the land
The seasons have their way
No mortal can understand."

djBlastalot - The Dark Ages are not the same as Medieval times, otherwise known as The Middle Ages.

Amazing song.
Gigant0pithecus 3 years ago 2

I would never call Loreena McKennit a witch! She's actually very religious, haven't you heard some of her songs?! She always hints things or refers to 'Our Lord' or, if not that, then her entire songs are about Christ, Mary or some other heavenly figure...some of her songs are refering to historicl things but I would definitely NOT call her a witch, she comes from one of those strick, large families that are really religious....I think they would burn her at stake :P
amabilis77 3 years ago
The only songs I hear that are religious are the Christmas ones....
And its not an insult to be called a witch, even though the word itself is insulting

I sincerely hope she's not pagan, I've looked up to heras a Christian rle model singer.

That's really biased. Why does it matter what religion she is? She's got the voice of an angel either way.

it matters because if she were a pagan i wouldnt support her, thats why it matters
amabilis77 2 years ago
Wow. You are a perfect example of people who are so narrow minded that they cannot think past their own ears. I wholeheartedly support religion, but if it blinds you from everything else as in your case, I must say... it makes me rather sad.
valiantvyse 2 years ago 9
I don't understand your comment. You must like her music, but you won't like it if she is a pagan?
That's like saying you don't like Handel's Messiah because you're not Christian.
Loreena McKennitt's music has a mystical quality that should allow your mind to imagine anything when listening to it. Open your mind, you might surprise yourself.

You're clearly very stupid...
amabilis77 2 years ago

Although the word witch may be meant as an insult, many who know do not take it as so.

I'd like to second that.

I'm assuming that is why she sings about so many
CelticMusings 3 years ago 4
She also sings 'The Dark Night of the Soul' which is a Catholic poem/book and in the cd booklet that includes her notes along the road of her travels she expresses her fascination with the monks of a place in Italy and her attending Mass
amabilis77 2 years ago
amabilis77 Loreena is not pagan, she is identified as Christian. Of the United (or is it Unitarian? I'm not sure) Church of Canada. You needn't worry. Just enjoy the music, like the rest of us Buddhists, Wiccans, Jews, Hindus, atheists, followers of Zenu, even Klingons.

Why people comparing Lorena and Jan voices, how can you compare two perfect and unique voices, two state of art, I'm so sorry for those of you and hope some day you will get it ;)
JerbatimSerex 3 years ago
Jan Werner has a powerful voice and his high tenor does a good job on the song but the best you can say in comparing it to Loreena is that it's different and Jan has his own interpretation. IMO his version is very inferior. Don't mistake technical vocal tricks like note-bending or sliding, which he overuses, for "feeling." Jan performs the song, Loreena really feels it and understands it, that's why most covers don't match the original.
keybender 3 years ago 11
Well said.
carabinier68 3 years ago 14
All due respect. Jan Werner can't compare (but kudos for trying). Loreena's voice has a subtlety and profound thrill that is hard to match.

So hauntingly beautiful it hurts! The chorus of this song truly takes me beyond time and space. It's as if all the beauty, wonder, enchantment, melancholy, and sadness of this world exist in one single melody. Work of a musical genius!
