I read that Ian McKellen modeled Gandalf's speaking style on Tolkien's, and you can hear it in this interview.

@bonchbonch all he had was a saccharin smile at the worst times. all i can say is that you can't imagine a gruff scholar of the old guard if you thought he fit Tolkien's vision. The whole thing is Hollywood and American.

@bonchbonch No, it;s certainly infected all through with Hollywood direction. The barroom-like brawl in the castle is pathetic, sam and frodo have a soap opera relationship with sequences frequently left in maudlin emotional cliffhangers. some of the battle scenes are good, some of the speeches and moments of decisive action are rousing, and the nine going abroad from mordor on their destriers is excellent. but the mythical flavor is absent and most characterizations are amateur.
