I am doing this exact song for Jazz band and I'm the Flugelhorn soloist. I have to say this: I took a lot of inspiration from Thad, while changing stuff to make it my own :) A lot of people say it's expressive, so maybe I'll upload it soon of me playing it :)
I just have to sit down when I play this song - It is so beautiful and relaxing and so expressive. My son was so inspired by this arrangement that he is auditioning it for college
I recently decided that I was going to start going through the Real Book page by page, trying to read down a new head each night.
It's primarily meant to develop my reading and comping abilities, but I also get to be introduced to new songs I would otherwise probably miss out on.
This song makes me feel like my body expands at the same time as my soul is shrinking in side of it creating a room filled of pain and sufering, i'm left in side of this dark corps of mine. Shivering alone in the dark, in endless misery and endless solitude. Than the song ends though it felt like an eternity of pain and suffer. still I sigh over that the ending came so soon.
i am currently playing this song in jazz band believe it or not and the trumpet solo with the harmon mute instead of that is being played with a fluguel horn, sounds pretty good
And - the lyrice are magnificent too! I played and sang it for new Grandparents who came into the club where I worked. ALWAYS ... tears, from all of us. Thad wrote the lyrics too? Anyonw know? What a lovely thing ...
How special Thad is ... to create this. He is commenting on a wonder - of life. What an honor it is for Artists to be able to do that.
this song is so beautiful. We are playing it in jazz band at my school...wow. The ensemble at my school captures it all. And I get the pleasure of playing the alto flute. This song is just one of those ballads that makes you want to slow dance all night.
Thad was a genius...after hearing this beautiful melody simply played three times in a few, it's hard to imagine the same band could also blow the roof off with shouting, joyous, hard swinging, funky playing!

Makes me forget about all my problems for just a bit, but I'll take just a bit then none at all. Thank you once again my friend. Take care and have a wonderful weekend :)
Oh my, what a beautiful response you write. Thank you! I hope your *problems* lessen more and more all the time until your life reflects the goodness and truth that you are.
I sure appreciate the kind feedback and ideas to think about. A dear friend has been talking about "the romantic life" - not as in seeking *a* romance - but in a kind of lifestyle - an approach to living (hope that makes sense).
Thanks for your comment! I love the big bands like Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman etc. I love this song for the emotion I feel when I hear it :-)
Someone get me a napkin; there seems to be a red smudge on the Like bar.

The song is about the baby Jesus.
Actually Sir Roland Hanna played this melody in an intermission at The Vanguard and Thad made an arrangement of it !
Roland said: " Hey Thad, that´s my song."
Thad: "You can take one of mine compositions !"

Still a classic. One of the most beautiful melodies ever written. Thad Jones would have been 87 today. Happy Birthday, Thad!

Love the dreamy, romantic feeling this gives.
The melody is so pretty...the images are lovely, as always.
I have been longing for the sea lately so all the wonderful pictures are close to my heart.
