Smart dog indeed. But then, dogs, as I know them, have a keen sense of acting on their own when times call for it. It is not only the German Shepherds doing that. I had a cross breed "second hand" dog, jack russel with whippet, that could sense epileptic seasures. She was a real grand dog, still miss her, she died two years ago at the age of 19,5 years. But, she and many other dogs, have a great way to help out when it is really an emergancy. Here's to dogs!! Cheers!

this doesn't even suprise me the least. There have been times when either one of my family members or I would need help when we were extremely sick (Flu or worse) and our buddy would hear our faint cries for help, and would wake someone else up. GSD really are the smartest dogs/most loyal dogs out there+Angel (fought off a cougar to save his young brother).

I think what's more amazing is that buddy was in complete darkness many roads away from his home till the patrol car came along, He showed great courage and love for his family. I know the chaps injuries were not life threatening but it could have been and Buddy's actions could have been the difference between life and death for him and his family.

I am not surprised with Buddy being a hero.  My 8 month old German Shpherd puppy refused to even enter my home because he could smell fumes that I didn't even know were there! It made me go right to Home Depot to get a detector for gases and fumes so that my poor puppy wouldn't have to try to find a way to let me know HE wasn't crazy and was only trying to save MY life!

Never underestimate the intelligence of the German Shepherd, my K9 is a Shepherd and I wouldn't have any other breed. Being a person who knows the breed, I am not very surprised Buddy knew what to do... If you read the story, Buddies lineage comes from a K9 blood line.

So Buddy knew that the Trooper was responding to the call. Buddy knew where the Trooper would be driving. Buddy waited at the intersection and led the responding Trooper to the fire. That's a very smart dog. Buddy needs to be kindly scientifically measured. Buddy either was very lucky or Buddy's a lot smarter than previously given credit. Buddy's ESP would be a big help to us if we could do it.
