It is surprising how much felt can come off the shoulders while just barely taking any off the strikepoint to get the shape I'm aiming for. The steam and spray serve the purpose of puffing up the area of the strikepoint to keep from removing more than is needed in that area.
hello drwoodwind i need your help pleez, i have a kimball baby grand and theres something wrong with my satain pedel when i push it down it only goes like 1/2 inch down then stops and the dampers hardly lifts can u tell me what the promlems is.
It might help to dip the needles in CLP or lube them a little with lanolin. I have used the moto tool approach when I had hammers that were too hard to deal with any other way
Ever since I got turned on by the use of "electrical" voicing THAT has been my technique of choice. It entails the use of a modified moto tool and does a fantastic job if done right. The needles are extremely expensive though and one must be careful because they'll easily break during the voicing procedure.
Take care with alcohol spray as it will render PVA wood glue into jelly.
Naphta will soak the felt and slowly evaporate and will be inert to the wood glues. I would be curious as to its effectiveness in an application such as felt softening.
i really appreciate you putting these videos on youtube it really means a lot to someone like me. Extraordinarily informational and not to mention well done! You have a good speaking voice.
it's really interesting to learn new technique from american piano technician, we really work in another way in europe and on steinways pianos .for example i 'm talking about the way of sanding the hammers in the medium part ,we never but never work with a paper who take all the hammers together we only do that for hammers with no inclination(high and extrem high hammers) if not you will have a very big problem for the voicing because of the inequality of felt betwenn the hammers.thank's
great video. Do you use regular alcohol ormix it with water? What grade sandpaper do you use? The hammers on my piano need reshaping as they are pretty well grooved. Will you post a video on regulation? Would dearly love seeing one.
1. controlled use of steam from the cloth directly to the hammer felt
2. fine spray doesn't carry much water to warp parts.
The soldering iron curve was made by taking the larger of the two tips that came with the unit and banging it out with a hammer to flatten. Then I worked it over a bar with a hammer to get a curve. Very low tech!

It seems that any effect the spray, steam and iron would have on the hammers would be lost with that much file work afterward.

you really took quite a bit of felt off!

Hmmmm... I don't think so.

Doesn't that damp rag you layed on the flange screws make them rust?

The risk is minimized by:
1. controlled use of steam from the cloth directly to the hammer felt
2. fine spray doesn't carry much water to warp parts.

isn't there a risk of getting water to the wooden parts and have them get crooked?
Great series I must say!
Thank you very much!!!
Will there be a regulation videos?
