  • is that why the sky is blue?

  • Thanks for the video. I was looking for a nice visual explanation of redshift.

  • @greydawn Well whats more red shifted then Rebecca Barnes.

  • poor poor silly white people. they actually think there is an age of the universe.

  • @bank4fun theres age for everything...

  • They CANCELED the James Web telescope... They saw that we acquired too much knowledge, and they thought that it's better to spend even more money on war! When humanity will self-destruct, I will laugh so hard! AAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

  • There are only two infinite things: human stupidity and the Universe, and I'm not sure about the Universe.

    -Albert Einstein

  • @lllRavenlll Unfortunately delayed to 2015, but most probably 2016.. too bad

  • half the people voted this down? WTF?

  • Who the hell would votebot this video?? It's an information video from a group working to advance our understanding of the universe; How is that controversial enough to be attacked??

  • @dynchaw it's controversial because they feel it attacks their religion. These are idiots at the same level of creationists

  • whats with the hand movement ?

  • She reminds me of Frodo

  • Answer me this, if the Qur'an is the word of God why does most of the planet's population not believe it? You think god would make it more obvious than that wouldn't he? I mean is he trying to be tricky?

  • @Tofy710 You are offering no arguments, you are just quoting scripture that has no bearing on the discussion at all.

Your religion is a lie, you culture is diseased, your women are oppresed, your men are uneducated, if Allah and Islam are the true way than why are Muslim countries such shitholes? Why are the happiest most educated and finacially stable countries in the world made up of mostly non-believers? Answer some of these questions with real words. Not some out dated, unverified crap.

  • The fact that people disagree with you or believe different things bothers you way too much.

Live and let live, and let people think what they want :D

  • God said: And Verily, this (Quran) is a Reminder for the Muttaqun (the pious)

And Verily, We know that there are some among you that deny (this Quran)

    Quran sort Al-Haqqah

  • @Tofy710 5:34 I like how they give real information. It is a good educational video. Usually details are missing from the media.

  • @Tofy710 Disagree!

  • Then He rose over (Istawa) towards the heaven when it smoke, and said to it and to the earth: "Come both of you willingly or unwillingly". They both said: "We come willingly".

    Quran sort Fussilat verses -11

  • @Tofy710 Religion has no place in science, much like facts have no place in religion.

  • Was no conflict between religion and science

Quran prove scientific facts that have been discovered, for example Pulsar Neutron star

  • God said: By the heaven, and Al-Tariq (the night-comer, i.e. the bright star); And what will make you to know what Al-Tariq (the night-comer) is?

    (It is) the star of piercing brightness;

There is no human being but has a protector over him (or her) (i.e. angels in charge of each human being guarding him, writing his good and bad deeds)

    Quran sort Al-Tariq verses: 1-4

  • @Tofy710 The Qur'an proves nothing, there is no evidence, there is no testing there is no peer review.

Anyone can look up and see stars. Islam is just an imitiation of Judaism and Christianity and a poor one at that. Many people say "Look my religion is the right one because it makes accurate predictions." Yet, all the predictions are so general they are bound to be right eventually in some context, it proves nothing and is an intellectually feeble argument no matter how you look at it.

  • The Koran is the ratification of some new scientific discoveries

This is the biggest proof that the Koran is the words of the Creator

  • @Tofy710 What?

No it isn't. Not by a hell of a long shot.

Have you even read the Qur'an? There is not one bit of imperical science in it. You need to get your nose out of a book written by people squatting in tents inhaling camel dung 1400 years ago and learn about the world around you.. You're ignorance is monumental.

Even if there was anything remotely scientific in the Qur'an, WHICH THERE ISN'T, it would still not be proof of a god. It just means that someone wrote that down in a book.

  • God said: Or do they say: "He (Muhammad) has forget it (this Quran)?" Nay! They believe not! Let them then produce a discourse like it (the Quran) if they are truthful. Or were they created by nothing? Or were they themselves the creators? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Nay, but they have no firm Belief.

    Quran sort At-Tur verses 33-36

  • God said: Say: "If the mankind and the Jinn were together to produce the like of this Quran, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they helped one another" Quran sort Al-Isra verses 88

  • Did you know that a the Prophet Mohammad was illiterate and do not read do not write?!

This was the miracle of his Prophethood peace be upon him

  • God said: Neither did you (O Muhammad) read any book before it (this Quran), nor did you write any book (whatsoever) with your right hand. In that case, indeed, the followers of falsehood might have doubted.

    Quran 29 v 48

  • Muhammad also supposedly flew up to heaven on a winged horse too. There is about as much chance as that being real as me being gored by a unicorn on my way to work tonight.

We know where we come from, we evolved. There is a mountain of evidence. Whereas, there is no evidece by writing "If you don't belief then come up with a discourse like it" and calling it God.

It's so weak, far fetched, unsubstantiated, backwards drivil, left over from a time when man was still huddled in fear of the dark.

  • God said: And We created not the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, for mere play.

We created them not except with truth (i.e. to examine and test those who are obedient and those who are disobedient and then reward the obedient ones and punish the disobedient ones), but most of them know not.

  • Comment removed

  • Have not those who disbelieve known that the heavens and the earth were joined together as one united piece, then We parted them? And We have made from water every living. Will they not then believe?

    Quran sort Al-Anbiya verses 30

  • Come on guys, maybe she knows some sign language and is used to hand gestures for that.

  • She's showing everyone her wedding rink. Sorry guys... Hot Nerd-girl is taken!

  • I mean't "Ring"...whoops

  • I can't pay attention to what this woman is saying because her mannerisms are so...overdone? I don't know. Those hand motions kind of throw me off.

  • Like a bad impression of Carl Sagan with a vagina.

  • so, say our planet is rotating, we are slowly moving away from the sun, we are being sucked into a super-massive blackhole, how do I know for sure if these geeks are giving me correct information? maybe this "Expansion" is nothing more than an illusion being brought on by us being "sucked" towards a greater mass(the center of our own galaxy)...I would like to see an in-depth explanation on the tools and methods used to calculate these claims.

  • Go back to school, study physics, and you might understand.

  • So I guess you're saying that an object moving away would indeed Not create a red-shift?

  • What exactly do you think you're right about? YOU DIDN'T EXPLAIN ANYTHING!! LOL

    Thanks for the input...I guess...

  • no-ones' going to provide an in-depth explanation of of a 3 year mathematics degree in a 500 character youtube box. but the different movements you're talking about can be measured via redshift and the different movements can be separated out mathematically.

  • She's looking sexier, especially her top, in that top...But, those large, waving hands.......I don't know.

  • Scientists usually just have to talk to other geeks, so they're awkward when dumbing it down.

  • Amazing stuff.

  • shes creeping me out.. !

  • she looks like a man! D:

  • It's so annoying how she moves her arms so much..

  • For every gravity that attracts, there has to be gravity that repels. That is why we are expanding. Just my opinion.

  • Europeans tend to use a lot of hand gestures during lectures or presentations. It's a cultural thing.

  • shit, now I wanna study astronomy. But I just finished college. Damn it!

  • @ThatGuyyyyy Too much math, it's going to be hell.

  • pick up a book... theres many good books on the subject

  • lol, i agree. tie her hands.

  • Maybe less gesticulating? I love watching these videos, thanks!

  • Yeah it was a little distracting. But whatever, I didn't mind watching her THAT much, haha.

  • Why is the galaxy at 3:30 BLUE-shifting and not red-shifting as it moves away?!!

  • it isn't changing colour it just gets less detailed as the image shrinks and since blue is the predominant colour it appears more blue

  • Not to labour this any farther, but it definitely starts red (3:22) and as it gets farther (by 3:38) it is blue

    Still, great video.

  • @JPO1618 Hmm... short wavelength corresponds to blue while long wavelengths shows red. so I think these guys at NASA is right. I also get confused about red to blue or blue to red shifts sometimes.

  • I'm speaking of the light wave of the galaxy, not the galaxy itself

  • There are Multiple telescopes in use today in space. Each view a band of electromagnetic radiation in frequencies more precisely than Hubble can. Some are highly specialized such as the telescopes used to observe the chronosphere of the sun, something the instruments on Hubble can not do without damage. Hubble is famous because it has been up there for 2 decades and has been a superb general purpose tool to astronomers. Expect to see a direct replacement that blows its doors off in the future.

  • whoa supercutie. also good vid.

  • Well, she's doing a better job concealing the vulcan ears.

  • Ugh her expressions and mannerisms are totally unnatural. I can't comprehend why she talks and moves the way she does.

  • You are confused by gesticulation?

  • No... I didn't say I was confused about what she is saying, rather, just confused as to why she talks in that manner.

  • I didn't ask if you were confused by the subject matter....

The way she gesticulates is perfectly normal.

  • I like that picture of that galaxy in the background at 3:06. It reminds me of a yin yang. :)

  • rebecca is cute : )

  • @mobby32 - LOL! Like they'd even understand it! ;-)

  • and many more :)

  • When is the James Webb space telescope going up?

    ( pretty exciting stuff! )

    : )

  • When is the James Webb space telescope going up?

    2015

  • oh jeez, cant u guys stop talking about 'Handsy McHandhands' ?!?! >:/ ive seen much hotter people, srsly!!! this the science o/t universe, not the science of fucking biology!

  • yeah scientists dont like sexy time

  • Great sharing*

  • Shes great, but why is she talking like she's talking to 5 year olds? :/

Her hand gestures get annoying pretty fast too btw.

  • Your choice for these videos is either Dr. Adamsapple or this here Handsy McHandhands. Just enjoy the science and try to ignore the bizarre mannerisms and movements the hosts always have XD

  • They do. I'm afraid she took a course or something :/

  • Someone needs to tell that Rebecca Barnes to stop putting so much emphasis on her hand movements, they look un-natural and contrived.

Only weather-girls need do this, to draw attention from their lack of meteorological ineptitude.

  • shes wearing HIDEOUS clothes, but at least she is keeping them eyebrows shaved

  • Oh wow, I was thinking that. She is a great host, but wearing the worst clothing.

  • yeah it kills me cuz shes got such a sexy voice but she dresses like my grandma and sometimes has trouble taming her eyebrows

  • bah who cares... shes fine... but the job requires her to be professional. gotta appreciate a woman with some career to back her up.

  • lol yeah i'll back her up all right

  • Why is there always some Christian nutjob spewing his from child indoctrinated bullshit around in these channels.

Their ignorance about the subject while thinking they know it all because of a 2000 year old book that has been re-written many times is so anoying.

  • The creationists should try Chinese litterature, they have 3 thousand years up on their stupid bible, and its more accurate... After all, The Chinese are the new economic super power, now and its their turn. So, those creationsists are going to have to do business with them, whether they like it or not. So, they'd better get to learnin' I reckon... Hyuck, Hyec, YEC, YECHHHHH!

  • Does anybody how to divine the initial wavelength of a distant star by accounting for the doppler effect?

  • @impowow

The answer is posted directly over your comment.

  • Now can someone please tell me how the repeatable math and scince shown here is just another peice of gobal scientific conspiracy to hide the "truth" (LOL) that the universe is only 6 thousand years old?

  • @mak1759; I'm not an expert on creationist bullshit but I'll give it a try: because the Bible says so !1!1!one

Hey, I'm good at this. I should be a spokesman for creationism, what do you think ? ^^

Or what about this one: Lizardpeople can alter the human mind to believe complicated stuff they can hardly grasp, because they hate God.

That's a good one, too. I'll ask Geerup if I can write a batshit crazy script for one of his videos, I'm on fire ! xD

  • How-a-bout this one, anyone who says anything contrary to my GOd, is possessed by the devil or demons... Woo hoo! Yah, baby, yah!

  • @V0r4xiz sounds about right 8)

  • I could watch this kind of stuff all day. I remember a time when TLC used to play these kinds of shows about space (narrated by the Shat himself no less), but now it's full of broken families, little people, and fashion tips.

I really can't remember the last time I actually learned something from "The Learning Channel".

  • I agree -- it's a lamentable sign of the dumbing down of television that TLC ought to be an acronym for "The Loony Channel".

I can't remember the last time that I actually bothered to watch anything on TLC.

  • **CREATIONIST STUPIDITY WARNING**

when he says the age was determined to an accuracy of 10%, it means a 10% margin of error, that is to say the given value could go up or down by about 10%, not that we were only 10% confident in the conclusion.

  • 0:55 What's that one called?

  • Specific name, or formation type?

  • The name, please :D

  • idk, sadly...

I was just pointing out that your question was to vague, and thus would likely be responded by, someone who gives you the information you really didn't want :P

  • Ok, thanks anyway ;D

  • Btw, do you know what the formation is called?

  • 10,000 galaxies in one image?? *Boggle* Cool stuff. :-)

  • how does one figure out a photon's true wavelength? one that is not distorted by space-time's expansion?

  • @xXDominoXx

On small scales the space-time expansion is countered by the fundamental forces, like gravity. We are not expanding. Not even our galaxy can be said to be expanding. All we have to do is measure a photon's wavelenght from a relative close source. Like a similar star on our own galaxy.

  • ah ok.

  • @xXDominoXx

That is a great question. The very simple answer is they use abortion and emission lines then a relatively simple math formula. Read more about it on wiki /wiki/Redshift. These absorption and emission lines hold true to their original wave lengths after being stretch due to expansion.

  • oo ok thank you :D

  • @creamsykle

Revise, I meant absorption not abortion lol

  • She still needs Vulcan ears :3

  • ...I'd shift her red
