Lincoln freed the slaves as a political move to make himself look better and so that the North had a more legitimate excuse to fight. The war began NOT over slavery. Sure, there was a large anti-slavery sentiment in the north but Lincoln freed the slaves later in the war. The war was not over slavery but over state's rights to secede (Which they had). I am a Northerner (From Indiana) and I support the South 100%. They had every right to secede.

Lincoln freed the slaves as a political move to make himself look better and so that the North had a more legitimate excuse to fight. The war began NOT over slavery. Sure, there was a large anti-slavery sentiment in the north but Lincoln freed the slaves later in the war. The war was not over slavery but over state's rights to secede (Which they had). I am a Northerner (From Indiana) and I support the South 100%. They had every right to secede.

@balabaluze Lincoln freed the slaves to keep Britain and France out of it. The war was fought over secession however secession was all about slavery. State rights was all about preservation and expansion of slavery. The Large plantation owners controlled State politics back then and the whole economy of the South was based on cotton and slavery what they wanted they got. I fail to see how you determined the south had the right to secede when secession is not mentioned in the Constitution.

And about the right to secede; the states entered into an agreement by ratifying the Constitution with the Federal Government and had and still have every right to nullify that agreement.

Under a legal contract neither party can unilaterally break the contract unless it so specified. Secession is not specified in the Constitution so the South Illegally seceded. Who do you think ran State politics down in the South in those days.The Southern aristocracy (plantation owners) who's whole way of life was dependent on cotton & slavery.

@balabaluze Read the declaration of secessions by those states that seceded and read the cornerstone speech made by the Vice President of the CSA. Read it and tell me slavery wasn't the primary issue around secession. State rights was presented as an issue in order to get the poor dirt farmer of the south to do the fighting. The same goes for the North preservation of the Union was their battle cry, they were both duped. It was about power & money "a rich mans war & a poor mans fight.

@balabaluze The only legal way the South could have seceded was to take their case to the Supreme Court they didn't. The reason they seceded was because Lincoln was elected on a ticket of non expansion of slavery. The Southern aristocracy felt threaten over the issue & to some extent about the propose new tariff. Their whole economy was dependent on slavery without it at that time they would lose their way of life. Slavery was the primary issue centered around the secession of the South.

Are you retarded? Some of the largest military bases are in the south. If the south did rise, the governors would be the ones to order the secession. The governors control the national guard, and a large portion of the federal troops would go Confederate. Obviously some federal troops would remain loyal to the union (Like what happened in Ft. Sumter)
