i think it has to be copper but i tried triple A it works just as well... though, you dont need to put the magnets on the negative, you can put em on the positive

basically, it would have worked, but he had 15 guage wire or something and a lot of it! plus it was unbalanced so when that large wire spins and hits the battery, the force is enough to knock it over.
