  • In Canada, the statistic is that for the same work occupation, women make 15% less on average than men. Of course that doesn't take into account the concentration of wealth in the top 10% and top 1%, that is almost exclusively male-owned. Lower down the social structure, there may be more pay equity.

    One thing to consider, though, the book you were reading from is roughly 30 years old, and even the new editions keep some antiquated knowledge. Statistics show what people are doing, but not WHY they're doing it. I would suggest that people split up so much because we're not meant to have single life-long partnerships. We're more suited towards serial monogamy.

  • You suggest that people cannot be committed without being married, and I respectfully but completely disagree. I don't need a document to tell me how I feel about someone, and I certainly think I'm capable of making a long-term commitment without signing said document.

    On a practical note, cohabitation lets you see another side of your future (possible) spouse. Citing the difference between friends and family, people form a different dynamic with others when forced to live with them.

  • It is not necessarily a fear of commitment or of 'going to the next level', but an acute awareness of the effects of marriage on our modern society. Divorce rates are on the rise, as are the rates of cohabitation.

    More and more people are choosing to live with their partner and maintain separate financial portfolios. They're not planning for failure, but they're staying prepared for it. No more fighting over debt, or paying off what your ex can't. No alimony, and NO DIVORCE LAWYERS!

  • Lobbyists use statistics that benefit them, and bury/ignore those that don't. They get away with it because the concept of Men's Rights is usually considered a joke. A feminist minority has convinced an entire country that sexism (selective employment) is widespread. Not true. While there are certainly still divisions of thought between men and women, these are virtually nonexistent in the workplace. Sexual harassment suits, fear of false rape accusations and media hype have taken care of that.

  • The statistics are skewed. Men and women who have recently started the same job at the same time are being paid the same. More and more women are joining the full-time workforce, and I'm pretty sure women now outnumber men in college enrollment.

    It will take time for these current trends to be reflected in the statistics.. men (professors, for example) who have been working for the past 40 years outnumber the women who have been working as professors for the past 40 years. Just an example.

Man are just payed more, we have lived in a male dominated society for, well since society formed, this is true for ever county, maybe not the Amazons.     As for you and your jobs, there is little difference pay in low wage jobs, but promotions are still given male preference.

And - as my post surely have indicated - I am more interested in metodological issues than in gender issues. :P That does not mean I do not care about it, I do, and I think the difference in income that you have pointed out, are completely unfair and probably based in very arguable prejudices.

    I could not grasp the prurpose of the video. Was it compaing the results of sociological data with deductions based on personal experience? If this was the case, It showed multiple differences. It seems to me that your teachers are trying to show the importance of distinguishing data from intuitions.

  • Men tend to hold higher positions within businesses then women, but holding this constant women still make less then men do for doing the same job. What causes part of this disparity is that women tend to have more disrupted work lives than men, with less experience in the field and less experience with the same business for reasons such as having kids. This leads to wage disparities even within the same position. Yet, this does not account for all of the difference it makes it better.

  • maybe males are making more than females in the american work force today NOT because they are "striving" for more or have more "knowledge" but because historically they have been in the work force longer and have had a longer period of time to obtain the higher paid positions. Try to consider that despite all of the "advancements" American society has achieved; today in 2007 women and minorites still face extreme amount of adversity and disadvantages compared to their peers.

  • youre kind of wrong on the job thing-- women earn less because most high positions are taken by men. Its not like if two ppl are working at a corn stand, the man will get more money. thats against the law and ridiculous.

  • actually, on average, male nurses make more money than female nurses. nursing is a female dominated field, however males still make more money. also, she can't use jobs such as a corn salesman and a fastfood employee to compare pay. less than 1% of company CEO's are women.

  • I understand what you are saying about men who have higher pay grades getting more money, because they are more highly qualified. The statistics show that men in THE SAME qualificaion grade get paid more in certain businesses. And the generalisation you made about women not working as hard being the reason for these statistics seems a little absurd to me. Leslie Lorraine is correct on this issue. Social Constraints become the barrier to progress.

  • a job & a career are two different things. Your work in the food industry describes a JOB- statistics are polling CAREERS. Anyway- men and women have equal incentive to strive to higher brackets- sociological constraints prevent them from achieving this (my bachelor's was in sociology).

  • I guess if one was to research the pattern of women in higher positions and pay brackets, I think that you will find that the women who earn more, and have high positions at work, either do not have kids, or are older and their kids no longer require parenting.

  • I think starwitch has a point. It was mostly looking at high up positions where a man and a women might hold the same job at a different company, but the women ges paid less and the man gets paid more. And they do the same job. We haven't experienced this yet Izzi.

  • In 2004, women's wages in the USA were 76.5% of men's wages. New Zealand is 80%. Sweden is an outstanding 91%

    what you say about men striving more could be one way to look at it, but I think the more likely reason is, because women are slowed down, by their socialised roles, like child rearing. Women get married and have kids. When a couple make a maybe its the women that has to take 9 months off, and this disadvantages them.
