Auctioning off virginity? OMG. That's disgusting. Using a human being to degrade and humiliate them for money while these women lack a firm idea of intimacy. So why is it that the overwhelming majority of prostitutes have been abused in childhood? Sexually and otherwise. There's a huge problem there and even those women probably thought they were making a choice, but based on a dis-eased psyche.
"Everything's cool as long as I'm getting thinner." Can someone tell Ms. Shalit that Lily Allen's song was a social satire, not an anthem? And was there a rap cover of the song, or does Ms. Shalit just lack rhythm?
I think I stopped listening as soon as she made a really fucked up generalization about Lily Allen lyrics... you can't do a reading of something and take lines completely out of context. It makes me assume everything you are saying is bullshit...
I feel that men are getting less opportunities to have sex. Because girls get turned on by celebrities or extreme hot guys only. Imagine in India, there are guys who are 14 or 15 and who are behing 40 year old women. Even they may not get that. And those women are complaining these guys are disturbing. But even then they may go to the one they want. Females are chosers and males are beggers when it comes to sex. But when comes to marriage, males take the revenge. They become chosers.
what ignorant drivel. She is trying to confuse the issue and play off the emotional revulsion of sex slavery and child rape.
THE TOPIC HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS.
The topic is "it's wrong to pay for sex" so in order to address only that question without introducing other variables you need to use sex that is acceptable to everyone the kind that is between CONSENSUAL adults.
So her entire argument was against the strawman of the only people who sell sex are victims of slavery and abuse.
She's also commiting the sin of presuming that a woman selling her body is doing so because it's "all she's good for".... suppose she wants to? In this age of sexual liberation, where a woman is supposed to be able to behave as a man... why shouldn't she choose her partners based on their income if she wants to? If she enjoys the sex, why shouldn't she sell it? I know enough women who sell bead jewelry because they like doing it. Her issue is with people paying for sexual slavery.
With her hamburger / sex analogy, paying for labor (i.e. jobs) is also wrong. After all, if we reduce paying for labor to paying for a hamburger, than slavery is just like forcing someone to eat a hamburger!
So no jobs people, because labor is a "special" thing that just can't be corrupted with money!
Sex is the #1 asset women have and is and has always been in high demand. OF COURSE they get compensation for it. Women doing that is nature and neutral. Lying about reality to gain more power over men is Machiavellan. Getting favors, alcoholic drinks, money, commitments, emotional dominance, etc.. are all forms of payment for sex. The most hurtful use of sex by women is to secure a husband and then, secretly, get impregnated by another man and have their husband raise it.
Although I'm not a fan of either, prostitution is preferable to promiscuity because prostitution at least rewards a man for being productive and making money.
I can not find the study that says one third men would rape if they could avoid detection. I did however find a survey that said 51% to 60% of men would rape if they could get away with it. The survey had major issues including representative bias amongst one of its many flaws including asking ambiguous questions.
This really has nothing to do with the subject of the video either. Completely asinine.
"not even allowed to leave the house unchaperoned..." Awww... is that true? Isn't it so convenient to throw the "discrimination" card out at every chance you get? If women don't achieve or ascend to power or genius, it's of course it's discrimination.
One's childhood history has no bearing on consent women make in adulthood. So a woman who was sexually abused in childhood can consent to have sex in adulthood, it is illogical to believe that a woman consenting in adulthood is raped.
"Since most prostitutes start out as children - who are not legally able to consent to sex, are pimped, and have been abused in their childhood, prostitution is very much rape."
Where are your plethora of false statistics to back this up? haha...
Oh, I understand, women need more time because they have been oppressed for so long. At what time can I officially declare that men are superior in such fields if no women have surfaced in the fields?
A man with an extensive adolescent rape porn collection under his single bed is accusing a person of using false statistics just because she happens to be a woman? How unsurprising. *YAWN*
@multiquantumcheck Sadly, That's the way it goes generally. There are some exceptions, I have met some sex positive women and feminists who were very reasonable.
Considering that women outperform men in school and college, of course, women are 'reasonable'. Indeed, it is 'reasonable' to argue that women are more 'reasonable' than men.
Implying that those who are against degrading and raping children and women, are somehow 'sex negative' is a pathetic attempt to cover your immorality and depravity.
@multiquantumcheck Academic performance doesn't correlate with reason apparently. I guess that is why there never has been a female version of Socrates, Newton, Descartes, or Voltaire. Men have been shown to the be the brightest of the sexes, yet also dumbest. Woman, a mere mediocre betwixt.
Prostitution is not the raping of children and women. ha Thus an example of the unreasonableness.
The reason why there has never been a 'Newton, Descartes, or Voltaire' is that women were not even allowed to leave the house unchaperoned, let alone go to school, work, or become a philosopher. But I will admit that it requires more than one functioning brain sell to connect the dots.

@Anarkokommunist She's an amateur. We can't force people to have sex (rape) and no, we can't force people to work for us for no profit (slavery). But we can offer and pay a consenting adult for sex, or to work for us for a wage.
Of course, men can force children, women, and sometimes other men to 'have sex' with them. According to the U.S. Department of Justice approximately 16% of U.S. men do exactly that. And research shows that at least one third of men ADMIT they wish and would rape a women if they could escape detection ((Malamuth 1986, 1989a, 1989b; Knight & Sims-Knight 2003; Seto & Kuban 1996 etc.)
As for prostitution being some form of 'choice' and involving 'a consenting adult for sex', it is quite common for johns, sex offenders, and Misogynists' Rights Activists to feel this way.
Perhaps your metal illness will be over one day. Everything is possible.

If you watch the entire debate, Wendy Shalit clearly has a dislike toward men in general. She just comes across as a very dislikable person with a chip on her shoulder. The other debaters on her side at least make intelligent arguments as to why prostitution is wrong.
By the way, I believe that prostitution, done safely and consensually between adults isn't wrong and has absolutely nothing to do with sex slaves and child sex abuse
The thing I hated about this entire debate is that they did not specify weather or not the person should be of legal age to sell sex and it was something they chose to do. In this section, the strongest argument I heard from her is "trafficking" "sex slaves" and everything in between that says it was forced, not something the victim chose. So naturally, you are going to agree with what she says because we are all against those things but says nothing of when It is a choice.
The problem with the demand is that there is a neverending demand for those with money to convert that into control over others.
Concentrating money created in ways that no one understands, knows is nothing short of slavery under the lie that the money created is created by merit.
First she says putting a price on people is wrong, but then she turns around and starts making value judgments about what other people do. Hypocrisy! People are assets! People have worth, and some people feel their dignity gives them value above being abused, or abusing others. Her 'legalization' made things worse claim is baseless. She also then projects the argument onto the US, where it's mostly ILLEGAL. If you 'legalize it', then it's not a black market. This is DEBATE??! Laughable!
This debate could be interesting but I don't think that it addresses the real issue. For example if you believe that it is wrong to pay for sex it does not necessarily follow that you would think it is so wrong to warrant criminal penalties. Lying is wrong but its perfectly legal. Also the real problem is not the transfer of funds which is legal (obviously), it is the sexual promiscuity that follows. A better debate would be, do you think that sex outside of a committed relationship is wrong?
Regarding the "22 year old woman from San Diego who is now auctioning off her virginity" ... does anyone now think that was anything other than a PR stunt for the Bunny Ranch and Howard Stern, one that showed just how dumb our national media can be?
what a surprise... feminists making prostitution a strictly feminine issue. nope, no such thing as male prostitutes. we need micro loans to women because men don't give back. what bigotry
What reason is there to mention male prostitution along with female prostitution when it's obvious to everybody that male prostitution constitutes an infinitesimal fraction of the whole? The only bigot I see is you. Care to cite empirical studies supporting your view or are you throwing stones from a glass house?
the reason to mention male prostitution is because the resolution is "it's wrong to pay for sex", not it's wrong to pay for sex from a woman! " are you seriously asking for empirical data to show there are male prostitutes? Pedophiles go to south east Asia to procure little boys too. and the idea that men don't give back is in the debate on the affermative side. if one excludes an entire gender from a relevent disscution it is a form of bigotry.
THAT is the biggest problem you see with that speech?? How about the gross manipulation of the question - from "paying for sex" to "forcing to sell sex" with no reference to actual pay after the sloppy "demand driven industry" argument? The vast generalizations and nonarguments ("everyone agrees that Netherlands...")?
i do not support prostitution. but your right, the debate strayed way off the topic. the engagement ring argument held promise. but dating was not used as an example of a socially accepted form of males essentially paying for sex. my statement is an a priori critique of the affimative sides complete lack of equal gender representation and misandry. the reason three feminists don't mention male prostitution is that it would be too hard to demonize men as exclusively victimizers after.

Not a good analogy. I'm sure Ms. Shalit would feel violated if someone forced her to eat a cheeseburger or a pork chop, and rightly so.

How could someone so opposed to the exploitation of women use Lily Allen that way?
