Never use Dreft or any other detergent that contains optical brighteners, fabric softener, fabric-safe/regular bleach, enzymes, or fragrance. It'll significantly reduce the absorbency of diapers.
Dreft is not an ammonia "killer," it is a cover-up. It just has very strong fragrance that masks the ammonia. Dreft is NOT the best diaper detergent. Proper washing procedures will remove/prevent ammonia smell and lemon juice or vinegar will help.
I used cloth diapers for several months. My son had "reactions" to disposable diapers. Not only was I washing diapers, I was washing his clothes, blankets, and my clothes! It's a lot of laundry.

Not to mention they soak up liquid like no other. Those clothe diapers have to be changed too often, with the disposable diapers usually they can go until they have a bowel movement, or 8 hours of pee soaked up into them.
There's a word for something that disgusting--NEGLECT. I'm sorry, but I hope when you grow old and end up in a nursing room, that someone leaves you in your own urine all day so you'll know what it feels like. I feel so sorry for your children.
When we use disposables for vacation or travel, I still use 8-10 PER DAY.
Actually, I use the same detergent that I use with my regular clothes (store brand--publix free & clear), and I wash 2 loads of diapers per week. When I used disposables, I had so many blowouts that I was actually doing MORE laundry--blankets, baby and adult clothes, everything would get wet/dirty! I was washing an extra load every other day.
Also, please consider the amount of water/energy that goes into MAKING each disposable diaper--which is only used once and then in a landfill forever.
Energy cost depends on several factors (for cost and eco-friendliness). First, where is your energy coming from? My city runs on nuclear power, not coal; plus we have a new, energy-star washer/dryer. And it's even better if you have solar power or if you line-dry your diapers. Cloth will last for several years and through 2-3 kids.
And the "awesome" designs on disposables pale in comparison to the awesome color and design selection of cloth.
@BinkieMcFartnuggets disposables are so much better because they use several known carcinogenic chemicals in them such as doxins, Sodium Polyacrylat, Tributyl-tin & Volatile Organic Compounds that can cause all kinds of awesome problems for your baby like asthma & other upper respiratory problems, toxic shock syndrome & possibly cancer. & with all the literal shit that is in your awesome disposables are viruses that leech into our ground water causing outbreaks of polo & hepatitis B. yay you!
Disposables are not better than cloth. It's called hanging them up to dry. People are too lazy nowadays

Use Dreft for baby diapers. It's the most rugged.
You will have more diaper rash with diapers vs no diapers, and more rash with cloth vs disposable.

Never use dreft with cloth diapers. It has a softener that will build up and make the diapers less absorbent.

Dreft is the best amonia killer.

Cloth diapers aren't much better due to energy costs to wash them and detergents, I stick with disposables, plus they have awesome designs on em.

Do want they did in the old days: wash them by hand and hang them to dry. Then again, that just solves only the energy issue.
