i always wanted to learn how to use a bo.. but i live in belgium so there aren't much schools for that.. your vids look like they could teach me alot.. so thnx.. ^^
Why is he so focused on impressing people instead of HURTING PEOPLE D: I WANNA KICK SOME ASS not make people go "oh nice trick you learned, circus monkey"
People are incredibly idiotic, always bashing any skill saying it's not useful. In reality, there's many things you do in life that you might call a "talent", that are completely useless.
However, everything you do in martial arts has a purpose. None of it is useless.
The art of a bo staff is utilizing distraction, disguise, and speed while striking your opponent.
These "tricks" allow for un-paralleled control of your weapon and a devastating advantage over your opponent.
is this just for show cuz i cant think of a reason why this would be good ina fight because u basicly let go of ur weapon. this is only a question im not saying this is bad or anything
@Csol15 Spinning in anything is just for looks. never use that kind of spinning tech in a real fight. a skilled fighter can knock the Bo staff out of ur hand when ur spinning it or when throwing it around like a Baton
@nkaujci it was said back in the martial arts era in the chinese dynasty, a master of the bo staff could spin it so fast that he could actually block arrows. there was a purpose, but no more.
@nkaujci it was said back in the martial arts era in the chinese dynasty, a master of the bo staff could spin it so fast that he could actually block arrows. there was a purpose, but no more.
first: it is a way to learn to let it become a part of you. in a real fight it's a bad day for a fighter who doesn't know his weapon. what do you call skilled?
second: It's disguise for your real intentions. where's he gonne strike? i dunno, he's spinning all the time.
third: this works for any kind of martial arts. boxers moving. taekwondoin jumping. they should save their breath, right? no, they spend it to send invitations that your pros would take only to loose.
this is fucking hilarious. I taught myself how to use a staff and this is exactly to every last detail how i did everything xD born expert or what? jk
you will never use the palm move in a fight, you do that and you leave your self open to an attack,i guess its cool to show off, but in a bar fight and all you have is a pool stick, dont palm spin......ever
wow so many comments like: useless WTF!? if you where to look for a USE for every stance and every movement in martial arts it would all fall apart. Intimidation through demonstrating your competency with a weapon is a USE for this and getting to know your weapon and a feel for manipulating it is another USE!
So it is not useless and saying it is demonstrates your lack of knowledge in this area.
@reef99red Not if you use the right technique, there are styles that use no fancy movements, stances and spins apart from classical aspect, these have no use and in a fight can get you killed. There is no need to show your competency in anything other than a brutal strike to render the attacker indisposed. Saying these skills are useful shows your lack of knowledge. A fight should last no longer than 20 seconds, even if you only have a basic understanding of a style
@jamesjdm Old saying that crops up in many cultures 'There's more than one way to skin a cat' One of my father's friends told me he could spin a bo faster than I ever could, I didn't believe him, he popped his fake hand off, attached the clamp stub, locked the bo in and spun it loke a propeller, and no, I still can't top it. Never dismiss a trick until after you've seen it.
how dare he to release the bo or let it slip through his fingers, thats not really smart, imagine what happens in a fight when his bo gets struck in one of those moments - then hes fuckin defeated (or even worse), cause his bo is goin to fall to the ground
you don;t use those moves for fighting. they are for demonstration-much like demo for swords involve spinning you would never do in a real fight. also, you can use those flashy moves before a fight before you close distance to tell your opponent what they are in for and to back off.
Hey Caleb, what kind of bo staff is that? That seems like a nice staff to practice on. I'm not in martial arts, and would just like to pick up bo staff techniques as a bit of a hobby. Thanks in advance if you can help me!
Also, what kind of staff would you recommend that wouldn't be too heavy? I'm about 5'11'' and I would preferably like to have a staff as tall as I am.
How are these beginning moves? For starters, I just started on the Bo Staff today, along side the Tonfa. We spent about 30 minutes just learning entering a fighting stance, holding the thing and strikes/defences.
Before you can start swinging it you need to know how to hold it. Failing that and someone is going to get injured according to what my sensei claimed. Aside from the fact that he's holding it with his hands in diff directions. I was told that was a critical no.
I think the opposing hand directions are meant to aid in the spins because it can't be done any other way. I think for strikes how you hold it is more a matter of style.
This move is obviously for show ONLY. However, practising this skill is a good way for one to get used to his or her staff. In a combat situation, if you pull this maneuver you're gonna get your ass kicked.
nice moves. im a green belt at shaolin self defense centers and i do staf too and iim pretty good but not as good as u. keep on makin staff vids and make other weapon vids too
Dont attempt it which is my suggestion. I have to use a weight bar with is 15-20 pounds and tricks like the instructor is showing isnt worth it with a heavy staff. As you can see he uses a light staff, it would be hard enough having an opponent and trying to focus on the heavy staff not flying out of your hands.
I have to agree with lukil45. I highly doubt you'll be wanting to put the staff between your fingers during any spar or skirmish. He does seem to know what he's doing though.
He used a eskrim( if thats how you spell it.) staff there. I never ever saw someone in eskrima use the palm spin, not even while they practice their combat moves. Its a kitty move to them.
This is definitely a show move. The only guy who could pull this off in combat would be chuck norris... :)
It's mainly used to show your opponent your control and weapons that spin, move quickly, and have silk and such attached to them are extremely distracting to eyes and it will get you off guard
Hi, what bo do you use? Can you send me a link for the staff? Thank you in advantage.

White Oak Bo is a common type. Bos are usually 5ft long and 6ft long. There are others that are 6'6 long.
The one i have is 6'1 or 186cm.
Im 5'11 also and im doing alright with mine.

Ideally you want a staff that will be about temple high, cut from a hard wood such as oak

dude.. you start doing the 'beginner moves' when you learn how to hold the staff. It is not like a 'stance' is the same as a 'move'
Cheuvin 2 years ago
Well, like I say, I have just started Bo :P. I don't know what counts as a tough move or an easy one. It just 'looks' complicated for a beginner one.

I think the opposing hand directions are meant to aid in the spins because it can't be done any other way. I think for strikes how you hold it is more a matter of style.
