I can still remember the day I discovered this track, the whole day at school I did no work.. all I could concentrate on was getting home to hear it again. I remember telling my tutor that I'd fallen in love.
I'm seeing them play TTT live later this month, I hope they still have this same energy.
@herndonhornet Great job, herndon. Some of the best lyrics ever. Hmm, methinks R. Butler might not have liked the Queen so much: "Mrs. London is coming round, she's coming with her son. Gimme all your paper, Ma, so I can get a gun!" Awesomely snide! YES!!!
she's coming with her son gimme all your paper ah so i can get a gun she has got it in for me yeah i mean it honestly she's so mean give me all your paper ma so i can buy a train they just wanna suck you in to being one of them tell her that i'm not in here tell her i'm a freak
tell her that i fall about every time i speak she has got in for me yeah i mean it honestly i just scream give me all your paper ma so i can buy a train i don't know how i got in here it's making me insane have another cigarette and have another cigarette in a room where lovers go talking on the telephone they have go it in for me yeah i mean it honestly they all dream
@parasanger Have you not heard "Book of days" from 1987? Best album of their career. Yeah, I mean it honestly! Have to agree with you though, that no one else ever made a saxophone sound like Duncan Kilburn.
@MisAnnThorpe You have excellent taste. So many of the posters here do. "TTT" is a monumental musical breakthrough, and "Dumbwaiters" is the head of the train. I've posted about it previously, but I once read a review of the song that said, "the song defies description by any human language" or something to that effect. Absolutely true. It is a sonic gauntleted fist. Everything from the vocals to the slightly "off" way they pitched Duncan's Sax, to the guitar solo. Incomparable. Indomitable.
@MisAnnThorpe By the way, I love "BOD" as well. My order would be: Tied for 1: "TTT" and the first disc, "Psychedelic Furs". 2: "Forever Now", only slightly ahead of "BOD". I love "Should God Forget" and "Entertain Me" (Ashton set his amp on fire in the recording), and the drums of "Parade" are spectacular upon close inspection!
These boys set an extremely disturbing, yet hypnotic mood. I had this album (Yes, on vinyl) around the time it was popular. As far as rock goes, I'd say it's pretty damned good. I had this song in my head at work today, and was pleased to find it on the 'tube. Thank you psychocandy77 for posting.
I sawe them a few times in the late 70s. Brilliant live. Better live than on record IMO. Memorable gig was at The Moonlight Club, West hamstead, London
I WANNA FUCK RICHARD BUTLER AND PETER MURPHY AT THE SAME TIME!!! I FUCKING WORSHIP, WORSHIP, WORSHIP THOSE 2 HYPER-BEAUTIFUL BOYS!!!! Richard, is a SHAME I was just a KID when I last saw you in concert 'cause if I'd been an "adult" ( like I am now ) I'd FUCKED INTO A COMA!!!! You're SO GORGEOUS IS ALMOST CRIMINAL!!!!
Played this last year at a bar aafter a softball game (and many beers before I hit the buttons), blew everyone out - peopl loved it and the soft rockers hated it. perfect! God Bless the new juke boxes with the cd's and 8 billion songs, beats trying to find B-side awesome hits (like Police's Murder By Numbers!). LOL
bud, I went out with Richard, their vocalist, so imagine how proud I am when I see all these peeps discovering The Furs & really getting their heads round them...as I did as a 16yr old ingenue!
Absolutely glorious. There's nothing quite like it. I generally dislike saxophones on rock records but the Furs knew how to use it; it's so sick sounding here.
Reminds me also a bit of some of Eno's early solo stuff before he went all ambient - wierd, compelling and ferociously smart.
Saw these guys back in the early 80's~ they played great live! This is my favorite song from them. Brings back a lot of good memories (and some I'd like to forget)!
saw these guys in NYC in the 80's (Peppermint Lounge?)they among so many others(Gang of 4, Lydia Lunch, Bush Tetras, Lene Lovich, Souxie and the Banshees...changed my life. long for those days...
Once described by a reviewer as "defying description by the English language."
IMO, this is one of the most inventive and monumental creations in music history. In any genre. The slightly off-pitch sax, the tempo, the lyrics, the guitar solo at the end. Nothing like it. This is my favorite piece of music, by far. Incomparable. A locomotive of musical audacity. Brilliant.
Fantastic...and there the chills and goosebumps are again. The Psychedelic Furs were always there for me since 1080. Saw them in hard times for me in Oz, bought their later albums on cassettetapes, whilst visiting family in the US...at home in Holland, and now from anywhere on on YouTube.
Still waiting for the new PF album to come out though ! But this Dumb Waiter is classic !
Ahh the memories... saw them in Los Angeles, '83 I think. (Magic Mountain of all places) haha on acid and young. They were very, very good live. In my state I was convinced it was a recording!! I remember thinking he moved a bit like Bowie... Their 1st album was the best in my humble opinion.
ahhh i remember seeing this during those early marathon days of watching mtv (when you could do such a thing) and this freaked me out...god i loved it..and no at the drive in took this...and note the attire, pulp (a band i do like) and many other brits took that coat..so ahead of their time
Transcendent. As was stated here earlier, their first two discs are seminal, and later anti-pop work often achieved glory as well. Despite the subjective nature of taste in music, I believe "Dumbwaiters" is the most unique and original song ever created. Once reviewed as "defying description by the English language." Indeed. The best of them all.
Richard Butler use to hang out at a bar/lounge in my neighborhood that was around back in the 90s in NYC and I always enjoyed their music. They always sound the same
Lucky you! I wish I had had the opportunity. Their older stuff just ROCKS! I still enjoy their stuff now even as we are getting older. I love Love Spit Love, too, though.

That's very cool, I didn't know they had a video for dumb waiters! I've been fond of this album for many years, and the one prior to this one.
To tell the truth, pretty much all of them, or at least most of them, but their first three, and after that, maybe a bit weaker.
