@hawkeye1893 if they make the model like , well I think this is kinda silly, the VF-1 Valkyrie or VF-25 Messiah from Macross series. (I'm talking just about the aircraft model and airframe, not about the robotic-transforming stuff). Is it still possible? (sometimes sci-fi things can be made true).
I hope someday in the future, US will make new advanced aircraft based on F-14 model like implementing variable-geometry wings and twin rudder, but with more aerodynamic fuselage and advanced technology and this time it's single-seat.
@CaptainGaruda It would be nice, but it won't ever happen. Swing wings are REALLY heavy and really complicated, and anything they can do can be done with "active geometry" (AG) wings, such as on the super hornet. By constantly varying the slats/flaps position based on speed/AOA, you can duplicate the effect of the SW with much less weight and complexity.
@CaptainGaruda Also, the F-14 was a VERY aerodynamic airframe; far more so than the F/A-18 or any plane to come after it. The F-14 was one of the last planes that were aerodynamically stable - e.g. didn't require a flight computer to remain stable in the air. If an F/A-18 loses its flight computers (called RPYCs), it will fall like a brick. As will the F/A-22, F-35, etc. etc.
only if they were still in service, they should send a bunch of them like that in the formation they were in over iraq and afganistan and carpet bomb jks

Nope, partially correct. F-22 is replacing the F-15 (not really any more as funding for it has been cut). F-35's depenting on the designation for them are replacing the F-16's, and U.S. Marine version of the British Harrier. The F-18's have already replaced the F-14's. They have been used in combat. But you're right. F-14s were Decommissioned due to maintenance costs and non-combat losses.
Your face is crap. Replacing the F-14 wasent bad. The F-18 is much more maneuverable, better armed, and much more advanced the the Tomcat. If you are a talked an F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet, it could take on any MIG any day. My father enjoys the Super Hornet more than an F-14. For some many reasons.
1. Smaller, and much more less maintainable
2. Cheaper, and comes with a powerful payload and is not afraid to go face-to-face combat with the enemy
My face is crap? What are you 12? Thats great and everything but the F/A-18E/F will probably never be able to prove itsself in air-to-air as well as air-to-ground situations like the Tomcat did. It had an impeccable combat record that could only be rivaled by it's predecessor, the F-4 Phantom. The F-14 was a definitive icon of air superiority adored by America and it's allies and feared by everyone else. The F/A-18E/F will NEVER have that kind of image or admiration.

F-14 was never built for air superiority. Only for Interception. The only reason it was fast, is to get to the TU-95 and shoot it down before the bomber got to its destination. I see the Super Hornet as economical. Economically cheap, reliable, maneuverable, has a MUCH MUCH bigger payload than the Tomcat, and maintenance is shorter. You have a greater survivability chance than the Tom.
I don't know. The service reports I've seen for the Super Hornet show more maintenance percentage that the regular Hornet, mostly due the the weapons pylons slight pointing outward making more stress on the wings.
Tomcat was more expensive to operate as such, but it's helluva lot nicer fuselage to look at than the Super Hornet imo :-)
are you serious?? The tomcat could carry more fuel... heavier bombs..... The tomcat's technology just ran out of date...I miss the Tomcats.. best jet I have had the pleasure of working around..
@rcz115 Heavier bombs?? The Super Hornet could carrier even more heavier bombs. And the Super Hornet could stay undetected for a decent amout of time while approaching its targets or performing SEAD operations.
You know nothing hombre. F-14 could go farther than the Hornet could and faster. That means that it could survive. The F-14 guys and some Hornet guys were running an exercise back when, and their mission was a bombing run. The F-14 carried more bombs because it didn't need the external fuel tanks, and when they were attacked by simulated SAMs, the Tomcat just out ran 'em while the Bug fell pray to it.
It's avionics weren't even out of date. The F-14D had at least a good 50 years left in her, and it could carry more weapons than the Hornet. Heck, they tested out HARMs and Harpoons on the things at Point Mugu, IIRC. If Quickstrike had gone through the Bug wouldn't even had a chance of surviving. Of course, the Bug won because of Dick Cheney and the fact that the Marines were supposed to buy it and exports were supposed to be through the roof. Guess that didn't pan out right, eh?
@Buffa1oso1di3r Its not because it was out of date. it had insufficient turning rates, and was too big to store more planes on the flight deck. or thats what at least the CO of the ships are saying.
Nah, the Super Hornet is just as big as the F-14 on the deck, so there goes that theory. And I suppose you're talking about it's maneuverability? If so, the Tomcat could turn on a dime. :|
The only thing the Hornet had over the Cat was (at that time) a wider range of ordnance and the fact that the maintenance costs were lower. Of course, the cost to repair the legacy Hornets is almost as much as it cost to repair the Tomcat. Most of the problem's with the Cat came from the Alphas.
ya but you need to remember the 14 was an interceptor, not a fighter, like it could fight, but it was made specifically for long range interception while letting other things (like the regular F-18s at the time before the supers) do eh close range fighting that takes high maneuverability. And of course the phoenix wasn't a fighter missile, couldn't possibly get something going that fast to turn to try to hit a fighter with the tech they had at the time.
Do you realize a modern aircraft carrier like the Nimitz class would normally carry at least 2 more Tomcats than that formation? They'd usually carry 24 Tomcats, that was only 22, hehe!
Uhh. actually you're the one thats wrong there are still some F-14D's in storage. The A's and B's and a few D's (modified A frames) were slated for scrap.
Actually only 16 are being kept in storage at AMARC, the rest have either been scrapped or sent to museums, somewhat ironically the Iranian AF still operate around 60 F-14 Tomcats, they were the only other customer for the type
cost to operate and the fact that the jets were running out of fatigue life, for every flight hour a Tomcat required about 70 man hours of maintenanace, whereas an F/A-18E/F requires only about 12-15, the two seat Super Hornet is now the fleet interceptor
there is a hell of a lot of maintenance that goes into keeping a military fast jet fully operational, i own a 1960's era Hawker Hunter FR.74S fighter/attack jet and just to ground run it for 30 mins requires a few hours of maintenance even though it does not fly
70 hours maintenanace per flight hour is far from impossible mate, the 1960's era BAE Lightning interceptor needed over 100 maintenance hours per flight hour by the time it retired and the RAAF's F-111C bombers require some 180 hours
I didn't have the chance to be on deck as an F18 launched....but I do remember well what standing a few yards away from the F-14A as it launched in full afterburner felt like.
As corny as it sounds, this video almost makes me want to stand and salute.
they maybe decomissioned, but nothing else comes close to these super jets in terms of combat experience, maneuverability, and air superiority. . .salute to the TomCats.
the formation they have, the lead plane is the highest, then all jets behind it are just a bit lower and lower as they go, from one angle it looks like a big delta wing shape, from another it looks like a big triangle. Its just the way they fly to avoid running into problems at close range like that
huh, actually the F-14 looks nothing like a B-2 aka stealth bomber, aka flying wing... if anything it looks like the B-1 which is only similar in that it has a swing wing design... this in reply to the description.
it may look like one, but that flying wedge formation has been around as long as combat airfcraft... so that's why I disregarded the formation as the shape in question, because it's older than any aircraft you'll see in the air today. signed - "dumb fuck"
I'm lucky I get to pass one of the last Tomcats on the way to work everyday.

I see the Super Hornet as economical. Economically cheap, reliable, maneuverable, has a MUCH MUCH bigger payload than the Tomcat, and maintenance is shorter. You have a greater survivability chance than the Tom.
sikorsky158 2 years ago
I don't know. The service reports I've seen for the Super Hornet show more maintenance percentage that the regular Hornet, mostly due the the weapons pylons slight pointing outward making more stress on the wings.
Tomcat was more expensive to operate as such, but it's helluva lot nicer fuselage to look at than the Super Hornet imo :-)
Gripen90 2 years ago 2
are you serious?? The tomcat could carry more fuel... heavier bombs..... The tomcat's technology just ran out of date...I miss the Tomcats.. best jet I have had the pleasure of working around..
rcz115 2 years ago
@rcz115 Heavier bombs?? The Super Hornet could carrier even more heavier bombs. And the Super Hornet could stay undetected for a decent amout of time while approaching its targets or performing SEAD operations.
sikorsky158 2 years ago
...
Buffa1oso1di3r 2 years ago
It's avionics weren't even out of date. The F-14D had at least a good 50 years left in her, and it could carry more weapons than the Hornet. Heck, they tested out HARMs and Harpoons on the things at Point Mugu, IIRC. If Quickstrike had gone through the Bug wouldn't even had a chance of surviving. Of course, the Bug won because of Dick Cheney and the fact that the Marines were supposed to buy it and exports were supposed to be through the roof. Guess that didn't pan out right, eh?
Buffa1oso1di3r 2 years ago
@Buffa1oso1di3r Its not because it was out of date. it had insufficient turning rates, and was too big to store more planes on the flight deck. or thats what at least the CO of the ships are saying.
sikorsky158 2 years ago
@sikorsky
Buffa1oso1di3r 2 years ago
@Buffa1oso1di3r Okay? But have you seen the Super Hornet maneuver?? It is the most maneuverable plane without thrust vectoring!
sikorsky158 2 years ago
@Sikorsky
Have you seen the Tomcat in a dogfight?

SuperHornetTV 2 years ago
ya but you need to remember the 14 was an interceptor, not a fighter, like it could fight, but it was made specifically for long range interception while letting other things (like the regular F-18s at the time before the supers) do eh close range fighting that takes high maneuverability. And of course the phoenix wasn't a fighter missile, couldn't possibly get something going that fast to turn to try to hit a fighter with the tech they had at the time.
And the 18 is like half the weight for #3

The most awesome video of F-14s I have ever seen.
Do you realize a modern aircraft carrier like the Nimitz class would normally carry at least 2 more Tomcats than that formation? They'd usually carry 24 Tomcats, that was only 22, hehe!
Awesome!

Don't worry we still have them in "mothball "if we need 'em;)Great old bird indeed!!
trav1971 2 years ago
uhhh...actually, you're wrong. These birds are scrapped for security reasons (i.e black market sells of parts to Iran to support their Tomcats).
ryanyomomma 2 years ago
Uhh. actually you're the one thats wrong there are still some F-14D's in storage. The A's and B's and a few D's (modified A frames) were slated for scrap.
StringfellowHawke71 2 years ago 2
Yeah it's retired from the front lines now it's in stroage, since there reliable interceptors.
eviltwin777 2 years ago
Actually only 16 are being kept in storage at AMARC, the rest have either been scrapped or sent to museums, somewhat ironically the Iranian AF still operate around 60 F-14 Tomcats, they were the only other customer for the type
monaro632 2 years ago
Well that sucks why did they take it away? Who's going to intercept?
eviltwin777 2 years ago
cost to operate and the fact that the jets were running out of fatigue life, for every flight hour a Tomcat required about 70 man hours of maintenanace, whereas an F/A-18E/F requires only about 12-15, the two seat Super Hornet is now the fleet interceptor
monaro632 2 years ago
Why so much maintenanace? i thought it's only refuel rearm and their off again...
eviltwin777 2 years ago
there is a hell of a lot of maintenance that goes into keeping a military fast jet fully operational, i own a 1960's era Hawker Hunter FR.74S fighter/attack jet and just to ground run it for 30 mins requires a few hours of maintenance even though it does not fly
monaro632 2 years ago
I seriously doubt that statistic....70 hours is impossible. But what the fuck do I know...
PlayerHater117 2 years ago
70 hours maintenanace per flight hour is far from impossible mate, the 1960's era BAE Lightning interceptor needed over 100 maintenance hours per flight hour by the time it retired and the RAAF's F-111C bombers require some 180 hours

I didn't have the chance to be on deck as an F18 launched....but I do remember well what standing a few yards away from the F-14A as it launched in full afterburner felt like.
As corny as it sounds, this video almost makes me want to stand and salute.

they maybe decomissioned, but nothing else comes close to these super jets in terms of combat experience, maneuverability, and air superiority. . .salute to the TomCats.
roelskiing 2 years ago 2
when they fly past dont look like ther in the same shape
hujbqnl 2 years ago
the formation they have, the lead plane is the highest, then all jets behind it are just a bit lower and lower as they go, from one angle it looks like a big delta wing shape, from another it looks like a big triangle. Its just the way they fly to avoid running into problems at close range like that
ChrisHA2005 2 years ago
cool

huh, actually the F-14 looks nothing like a B-2 aka stealth bomber, aka flying wing... if anything it looks like the B-1 which is only similar in that it has a swing wing design... this in reply to the description.
wraithman07 2 years ago
You dumb fuck! Hes on about the description of the formation. If you look its a silohette of a B2.... Not the individual F14s themselves
misterperkinsXx 2 years ago
it may look like one, but that flying wedge formation has been around as long as combat airfcraft... so that's why I disregarded the formation as the shape in question, because it's older than any aircraft you'll see in the air today. signed - "dumb fuck"
