What are the difference between "Voice Recorders" and "Portable Digital Recorders"? Do they all work the same as each other or different from each other?
"Voice Recorders" typically record audio through low-quality microphones, and use low-resolution audio files. "Portable Digital Recorders" usually have good quality built-in microphones, allow you to record in high-resolution files types, and often have the ability to accept other sound sources (such as external microphones or line-level signals). Plus they make it easy to plug into a computer to transfer the record files.
From what I have seen, the Zoom H2 seems the best affordable model. They go for about 150 bucks on ebay. Type in zoom h2 shootout here on youtube to see how it beats more expensive models.
I haven't tried out the Yamaha PocketTrak G2 yet, but what I've read about it seems pretty cool. It's the smallest of the pro audio recorders, it can power off of an internal battery or an external AA, and everything is built-in, including the USB plug. It's like a jump drive with a high-quality stereo mic on it.
id also check out the TASCAM DR-07 I have one paid $144 on ebay, its awesome

Anyone have a suggestion on the "value" model to purchase? I'd like to record nature sounds on a compact recorder (and a low budget).

How does the Yamaha pocket-track 2G Portable Digital Recorder compares to the ones you show here? Which one has the best sound quality?
