I think the problem is the wakes, my uncle has boat like that and guns it all the time, but the wake isn't that big, but my grandpas 30 ft triton almost got capsized by a nine foot tall yacht wave, that's the real problem
What exactly is so unsafe about this? I didn't see 1 single boat that went anywhere near 130mph. In fact all the boats on this video, seem to be operating in a safe manner.
@speter4205 I never once felt unsafe at this event and agree with you that I didnt see anything that doesnt happen every weekend on the lake. But I have to disagree with you on how fast some of the boats were going. We were doing 90-105 mph for a lot of the run and were getting passed. 130 definitely wasnt out of the question for sections of the run. It was a great time though.
130+ MPH....LOL..There wasn't a boat in this video that even came close to those speeds...Maybe 75-80 but just showing a big rooster tail doesn't mean the boats traveling that fast. Not that they couldn't have but it's easy to see that all of the ones shown here were just cruising along and none were driving in an unsafe manor... It's very apparent that the poster has an agenda on nice boats on the lake...
This is the same group of Power boats that ran in the "Support the Troops Poker Run earlier this year". This run was also permitted at a 60 mph limit by the Water Patrol, and this video of one of the participants says: "Getting to the first stop we ran the Stampede boat 135 - 140 mph" . I tend to believe there was no change in their need for speed.
I should also add that a few hundred feet off of my dock in the early afternoon this video was taken a 3000 hp dual turbine boat, the Statement, went by at "about 160" mph per the driver. The reason I know is he blew a turbine a few seconds later, and I asked asked the driver personally.
Cool video. My opinion is I think you're fighting the wrong fight on this one. Stick to your battle on excessive wakes. Those are the real problem. I own a 23' foot boat and drive all over the lake and have never felt threatened by someone's speed. Wakes from 50', 35,000 lb yachts, far different story. Those threaten the livelihood of people in smaller boats, as well as do damage to property.
@craigslaten BINGO!!! That is nothing but a true statement!! These guys and girls are much more attentive and understand boating far better than most yacht owners ever will.
Craig, you might want to look at the youtube video "Skater Going Fast, Jim Lee's 46' Skater Freedom US-1", and watch how they pass other boats, and watch the sailboat they fly by close on both sides. I bet he was rightfully upset.
It is the poor attitude of many Power Boaters, and especially this day that they were required to not exceed 60 mph by the Water Patrol permit. They left earlier on the route to avoid the 60 mph restriction that the Water Patrol considered safe.
@LakeOzk I checked out the 'skater going fast' vid. I'll agree there were some passes there that were too close. That being said, I've experienced equally and more dangerous passes by waverunners going 30-40 mph. I just don't think speed is a real problem down there. A speed limit wouldn't significantly impact the safety of that lake. Weight limits on boats certainly would.
I agree with you that the huge wakes are a much larger problem than speed over 100 mph, but also much more difficult to address. The wave runners are often ticketed, and there are laws on the books that the water patrol can enforce. Wake, and speed are both problems, and need attention. The super speeds are easier to address.
Of course its unsafe. So are commuter planes and beautiful women. These guys know what they're doing. You dont spend, in some cases, upwards of a half million or more bucks on a toy that you cant drive!!!
You mean if NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon bought a 267 mph 1001 hp, Bugatti Veyron at a price of $1,700,000. he should be able to run it as fast as he wants, on any public highway any time he wants because he knows what he is doing ?
