Israel developed a strong relationship with the Apartheid government. It was the only developed nation that diplomatically and strategically supported the Apartheid government, and likely aided it in it's procurement of nuclear technology.

Nelson Mandela has every reason to despise Israel, but he doesn't. You know why? Because he is an enlightened man, a man who fundamentally disagrees with such petty emotions, and made decisions based on right or wrong and not based on political calculations.

He has since condemned the ANC for not acknowledging the many human rights violations that they, and he committed while violently resisting apartheid. Mandela and ANC members were not even allowed to travel to the United States until recently because of the ANC's designation by the Department of State as a terrorist organization.
