It all depends on the tune. If I was playing something more mellow like "Got you under my skin" or something I would lay back a little and play behind the beat. Splanky just calls for that top heavy drive.
Books? Not really. Brushes are something I picked up from watching and listening to other brush masters. Elvin Jones, Jo Jones, Buddy Rich, Clayton Cameron and Jeff Hamilton are some of the innovators and masters of brushing.
Good to see that you're drumming is much much much much higher than you're IQ. You're problem is that you're a jazz elitest. Jazz is great music but theres more good music out there
Ha. You think jazz is some single musical entity. There is so much more to it than the kind of beat you play or the way you hold the stick and its principles are found in all modern music. I'll be sure to post some samples of other music I have recorded.
No I know exactly what jazz is and the reason I don't think you know what jazz is is because you seem to refer to swing as jazz (which it can be but it sometimes wasn't since jazz is improvisational). Anyway, good playing but please please please open up your mind and accept that other types of music are good
You are completely missing the entire point. Swing is a feel, not a style of music. When I said Peart can't swing, it means he can't feel it. Swing can be in samba, punk, funk and so many other forms of music. To assume I am basing it all on someone's ability to "play swing" is foolish. It's based on Vin's versatility (IE discography) and the ability to "FEEL SWING." Big difference between feeling swing and playing swing. HUGE difference you need to recognize.
If what you're saying is true then you don't appreciate any music other than jazz because Peart is an amazing drummer (best in rock) and you seem to say he sucks
You still don't get it. Yes, he's good and in a great band but he's no Vinnie Colaiuta. And you STILL don't see my point on what jazz is. Not sure you ever will.
hehe, if you asked an old school jack of all trades like Mel Torme or Buddy Rich, they'd tell you drumming is just tap dancing with sticks in your hands. :-)
you should upload that song. haha. can't find that recording anywhere!

Could you tell me a little about the snare you're using. What kind of heads... My drum sounds like an oil drum when I use brushes.

Swing is a feel that can be in many types of music but Swing actually is a style of music, basically the really early big bands

And please don't sit there telling me I don't know music and I don't listen to anything but jazz. That's just rediculously untrue.
