I had this happen to me at least 6 times and 2 times in one night. We have 1 F550('05) and 2 F450('08 and '10) ambulances at work and they have all done it. Scared the crap out of me when it happened on a back road twice with a patient in the back of the ambulance.
ABC 7 in the Bay Area just did a report on this regarding Jeep Wranglers, they've known about this since 95! Wow, thats bad! Way worse than my 99 Caddy's "Seville Shimmy". My mom has a 05 Liberty with just over 100k on it and never had the issue.
Okay for all the "Death Wobble" folks.... It is also a very common issue with Jeeps... Get ready to break your wallet out... Just kidding.. It's a $20 part..Track Bar Bushings
I have a 05 f250 that had this same issue. Took it to a 4x4 shop because Ford and other alignment shops said they could not find anything wrong and that it is probably out of balance tires. The mechanic at the 4x4 shop diagnosed that my track bar was shot within 10 minutes. He installed a new one and I have not had the issue since.
I had an 01 250 diesel that did that after new stabilizer bushings and all what ended up fixing mine was the spindle bearing on inside of the wheel bearing it let's your axle flop which causes the horrible shake.
Our 2006 F250 does this and we have been trying to find how to fix it. I have almost gotten ran over by semi's a few times trying to slow down and pull over to shoulder when it is out of control. Someone that cannot handle it will probably end up getting hurt. It is very, very scary.
i actually fixed my problems...my ball joints were shot so i replaced those and my trackbar bushings were also going bad then i balanced my tires again and got an alignment drove about 1000 miles so far and it hasnt happened again
Ford, denies, denies, denies, that this ever happens. They want me to replicate, would you want to? NTSB fails to do anything about it..... wonder if the Ford Lobbiest Work there?
Never had anything like that on my 2005 superduty! That's crazy. Maybe you should get a dual streeing stablizer. They are around $150. My 05 is a 5.4 gas,4x4 ext cab shortbed with 2.5 lift and 35 inch tires. It does nothing like that.
happened on my 05 6.0 with 35's at about 40mph but my experience was much more violent shaking. In any case, I went with a steering dampner and that resolved the problem.
thats not a ford problem but rather a dana front end problem ive heard of it and i been in enough trucks to know its hardly ever an issue maybe just a stupid ass owner
I had that happen on my2005 f-250 superduty told the ford dealer what happened at high speed, their responce was that the speed limit is 65, my responce was not when I am an EMT on a call fire dept. I was able to fix this by adding weight to the back of the bed via tool box.
I Guarantee that its the ball joints my dads truck did that, when they took the tire off the ball joints were shredded all to pieces after they were replaced the truck shook no more
Try fixing/repairing or more likely replacing the steering dampener there slick. It has nothing to do with which engine it has. That one was a diesel.
If you go back and carefully read the posts, both coil sprung and leaf sprung, gas and diesel, stock and over-sized tires, and new with new ball joints and steering boxes have this problem. Sounds like a suspension and steering geometry design issue inherent to Fords to me. My guess is that when the truck is new and everything is tight it does not do it, but once it loosens up the design error becomes apparent!
@NVMDSTEvil.....I have to agree with that. Being that my 1996 Chevy 2 door Tahoe with an independent front suspension and 196K miles does not have that problem. It is not fair of me to pick on Fords, since the solid axle and leaf springs are probably creating an iso-fulcrum effect?
@jerseypaul2007 There are vids of coil-sprung jeeps doing it too. The problem tends to be an alignment issue or tire balance as far as I can tell. Weak or damaged trailing arms, bushings, steering arms, or anything in the steering chain of parts could exacerbate the issue.
That said my 1990 Dodge 3/4T 4x4 Diesel with almost 400,000 has no issues and the Dana 60 in front and leafs have some issues.. so who knows really. Boss's 4x4 F250 with almost 400,000 has no issues either.
I have a 1997 Chevy c3500 dually with a 454 in it and 2 wheel drive. I have the same problem. My steering is a little loose if i fix that will that help
All these comments about wheel balance .....congrats you are all retards....short bus people. I have drug trucks out of fields...nothing like this...I have repoe'd trucks with bad tires and so on..nothing like this....Ford new the problem and never addressed it...
My 2002 Ford Explorer did that because the retarded tech at the repair shop didnt balanced my wheels had no wheel weights on it did it around 70mph everything fucking shaked badly
My 2006 f350 4wd sd diesel does this same thing. Anyone try the Superdutywobble dot kit? $825. They say they've fixed them for 3 years and never had one come back.
My 1999 ford 250 had over 200k miles on the front end and I never had this problem.. Before i changed the tie rods and ball joints there was only a slight swaying on the highway( it does have the front leaf spring setup).. This looks like your entire front end needs to be rebuilt.
i think the problem is the steering stabilizer, i have two dodges ram 2500 with the same problem, i changed the steering stabilizer for a pro comp double one....solved my problem.
In 2006 Ford introduced a coil spring front suspension to the f250, f350. If you own a superduty before 06 you will have a front leaf spring setup, therefore, you will not have this problem. This has nothing to do with wrong tire size, or it not having a diesel engine, or alignment. This is a production flaw, and there is a TSB about it. Ford calls it "cab shimmy" and "its a common characteristic of a truck with a solid front axle". Ford jumped the gun on the coils
I've seen the "death wobble" in just about every make of truck and ranging from 50's models till present. The reasons vary, but usually wrong size tires or worn or or aftermarket parts are to blame. Suck it up and fix it.
I had a 2004 V10, and now a 2005 V8... never had this problem... something is wrong with the truck... the only common problem is with the driveshaft's holder bearing.. other than thats its a superduty truck...
We are the original owners of an F350 Powerstroke and have had some major issues with our steering. We have replaced the steering box, steering pump, drag ends, steering assist, tie rods, etc. to no avail. We found it interesting that both NAPA and Auto Zone had the steering box and steering pump IN STOCK for this vehicle. They core charge is over $200.00 (appear to be in demand). This vehicle will literally jump lanes for no reason at speeds over 50mph. Help!
I have an '87 F-250 460 with leaf springs up front and a TTB suspension, that drives great at any speed and never gets a death wobble. My '89 F-250 5.0 is 2wd with twin I-beam suspension. It wobbles a bit at 75mph, but mostly because an imbalanced tire. I never go that fast anyway because the only time I'm on the freeway is when I'm towing or hauling my camper, so it's not a big deal. My uncle has a Super Duty with the 7.3, never wobbles.
WTF?! That's fucking terrible for a $40k+ truck. Seriously, class action lawsuit time. That being said, it's a fucking beautiful truck and I would kill for one just like that with 4x4 and a Powerstroke engine.
I’m having the same problem with my 2008 F-350 SRW. I love the truck but obviously this is a serious safety issue. Can someone please offer advice on correcting the issue?
PEOPLE. its because an f250 is designed for the diesel motor. when a gas engine is put in this truck, it loses 650 lbs over the front wheels. The overly rigid suspension mixed with the light engine weight causes imbalance. When a bump is encountered at high rates of speed the truck bounces uncontrollably.
@davidbudine Mine has a ten cylinder, I'm not sure how much more weight that is more than a V-8. Ford's TSB does indicate that the "Death Wobble" is more prevalent in gas models. However, Ford's internal emails, which I will make public on facebook , indicate that they have changed engine mount positions and added certain welds to see if that will help, but have only had minimal if any success. My problem is Ford WILL NOT fix, repair or reimburse for this problem, rather they fight it in court
@LASCON01 why should they pay for your repair? you are using the wrong size tire, which is most likely the cause of the wobble. or your wheel camber is out of adjustment. either way it is improper maintanence that causes this.
@davidbudine Thats garbage dude... i have been in and outta 250's since i was 16... I only like the 351W or 460W in em... never had any shake with any mine!
@davidbudine bullshit, ive had my 04 f250 with the 5.4 gas and this never happened. that is the dumbest shit ive ever heard..agreeing with MAlamborghini
@davidbudine actually this is a tire issue, either they are using the wrong size tires or the castor is out of proper adjustment. either way it is do to improper maintanence. looks like the owner is using aftermarket wheels & non standard sized tires. he's doing it to himself.
@davidbudine Actually he just needs to get his steer tires spin balenced. I had this trouble on my International 9400I, much worse then what he has. I had the steer tires spin balenced & I haven't had any problems since.
@davidbudine Youre an idiot. You think that 650lbs would cause that in a truck rated to tow thousands of pounds? No. People like you give other people a bad name.
@davidbudine Understandable. HOWEVER, I have a 2011 6.7 (the diesel engine) and I've had this happen to me twice yesterday and once today. I dropped it off at the dealer today and they said they would check it out. I am not a suspension or car expert by any means but what I've read says that it could be the steering dampener. I've also read that steering dampener just helps deal with the problems. It isn't necessarily the culprit. We will see what Ford says.
@etrevino1031 ....I have had the exact same problem with my 1997 and 2000 F350 Diesels. New steering boxes, ball joints, center-link all were replaced. Finally when I put a Skyjacker dual steering stabilizer on both of them it stopped the problem. It is an inherent issue to the Ford 4x4s. I am not 100% sure if the stabilizer just masks the real problem though. Both trucks have a new front-end in them now. Not much left to change.
I just got my 95' f350 out of the shop. I have a ranch hand bumper with a warren winch in it major weight on the front end, and I'm running 35" tires. I had the gear box replaced. I still have death wobble but not as severe. They also told me to replace all my tie rod ends with OEM replacements $600.
@davidbudine , I have a 2007 F250 with the 6.0 PSd(64,000 miles) and the wobble started on my truck this past late June. After tring several things to fix this problem I finnaly solved it by replacing the track bar with a after market one that is much more beefer than the stock. The wobbles are gone, the new bar cost me 450 dollars plus 45 dollars to have it installed

@okiefer66 Haha yeah, us dodge guys have been going through this for years. There's a few companies that make track bar upgrades that eliminate this problem, very much worth the few hundred bucks.
@LASCON01 I think he meant, how much is it to fill up a tank of fuel for an F250, I would also be interested in knowing this, as here in the UK it would cost alot of money with petrol sitting around 1.46 a litre
@1v1Multimedia cost me 220 dollars to fill both tanks out here in Northern California.... but I only drive the truck when Im working,,,, gotta 91 gt 5.0 mustang for the rest of the time =) only cost 40 to fill that
@jet62095 Yeah, I've owned Ford trucks for 15 years and put 300k miles on them. Until ford redesigned the front end from leaf springs to coil springs I never had a problem either. Go to super duty wobble.com and go to the paragraph just under the picture for the after market repair kit for the "Death Wobble" and click on the bright green NHTSA link and watch the videos. Unfortunately for me after market repairs didn't become available until I was in some accidents and had to relinquish it.
@Glonty1991 The truck in the video is not my truck. My truck was brand new, they tried changing ball joints and it did nothing. Look at the NHTSA website. There are six of their test videos that show that they can easily replicate the problem, why they let Ford get away this is anybody's guess. I guess if you have enough money you can get away with anything. There are thousands of these dangerous trucks on the highways.
@Glonty1991 It is definitely a design problem. Ford's internal communications and their own "Core Vehicle Dynamics Report" show where the truck failed in all of it's performance categories on rough roads and even in some smooth road categories. Ford refers to as the "shake and wheel fight". It is a national fraud to produce an item for sale to the public and knowingly endanger our safety.
@M34nPuppyDog my company had several fords in their fleet all short beds and all had this same problem. Repeated times to the dealer to get this fixed with no results on their part. They finally identified the problem as all the trucks were sold with the wrong type and size tires.
@MrMetalman13 Contact me, let's put our efforts together. I'll update you on the growing list of owners that want to put it to Ford because Ford has sold them this unsafe truck. I will put all of our concerns in front of attorney and national stage. Gerry 321-795-1635
Totally unacceptable for a $45K truck. My 05 F250 had the same problem. Took it to the dealer multiple times. said i was tire pressure. still had the problem. Submitted the case to the national traffice board. spoke with them for well over an hour. They said Tire pressure . Bought 4 new goodyear wrangler silent armor tires and have not had the problem since. 112K miles now . Mine always happened when going over a bridge on the freeway. Bought truck new in 05 and it came with BF goodrich tires.
06 f350 6" fabtech lift. I bought the truck used but still under factory warranty. I got the death wobble the first time i took it on the highway. had to stop to get it to quit. I bought the WC Motorsports track bar. That helped but now the issue is back and just as bad. Im compeletely disgusted with ford and how they are handling the situation. I have gone off the road several times and i dont feel safe driving the truck. checking tire pressure is not a fix! something needs to be done!!
I nearly crashed several times in the f250 4x4 work truck ('05 or '06 model) I had because of this very same problem. It was a 5.4 gas engine, but there was another guy at my work driving a f450 diesel 4x4 who experienced the same problem. This is very unsafe if you are not prepared to take on the death wobble. I finally told my boss I felt unsafe driving it and they gave me an '07 chevy diesel which is a great running truck. Ford should be sued over this! It happens more than people know!
@ncprerunner I would like to talk to you and your employer. We have a lawsuit against Ford but their attorneys continually delay and don't allow a jury trial because they would lose big time. We need more participation from the many other owners with this problem and get Ford to own up to their responsibilities and either fix these trucks or take them off of the road in the interest of public safety. Please contact me at 321-795-1635 (Gerry)
@ncprerunner You can also email me at glaschober@cfl.rr.com their are thousands of these defective Ford F-250/350/450 Heavy Duty trucks with this problem that are daily/hourly endangering our lives and every body else that drives on our highways. Several persons won't allow their children to ride with them because they fear the violent shaking will injure them. I took mine off the road and "revoked acceptance". The dealer put it by the body shop and it was used for parts (I paid cash for mine).
@ncprerunner My truck had less than ten thousand miles on it and I had brought it in multiple times to be repaired. The last time I brought it in the dealer and Ford refused to do any further repairs Ford still hasn't reimbursed me one dime.
TV show on speed channel TRUCK U had a show dedicated to ford problems and fixes. like head problem spittin sparkplugs and 2 piece sparkplugs etc. and they solved this wobble problem I dont remember the fix they did but if you found this episode It might help. Lmao show dedicated to ford problems !!!!!!
i have a 2006 F350 that did this DEATH WOBBLE as soon as i changed the front tires the problem went away , try rotating the front tires to the back. i have over 20K on my new tires and have not had any problems.
That happens when you build "not slow cars" over twisty flexy single wall chassis which should be reserved to slow forward control trucks only. You'll never experience that over rigid reinforced double wall chassis with rigid steering/suspension members (Toyota FJ80,Land Rover110/130,Mercedes G) Sadly US car builders (all 3) insist on "flexibility" (AKA cheap to build crap) over safety and control. Get full upgrading suspension/steering arms kit and replace stock flexy members to reduce symptoms
2006 Ford Superduty extended cab 4x4. Had the same problem. Brought to Ford numerous times to get the Front end checked out. About 2 years after purchase i received a letter from Ford explaining this "Death wobble". Ford had explained it as "Cab Shimmy", and that was a "characteristic of a truck with a solid front axle". Theyre solution was to tighten up the front suspension, hoping the problem would go away. Sound like a production flaw to me because it does not happen in all of them.
Is this a problem more common with coil spring front 4x4s? I used to own a 2000 Superduty 4x4 with the 5.4. I had 178000 on it when I traded it in and it never did this. i now own a 2002 superduty 4x4 with the 6.8. This truck has 113000 and hasnt done this. These both have the leaf spring front suspension.
Just follow up. I replaced the tires with Pirellii Scorpion ATS and put an aftermarket steering stabilizer on it. Problem solved. The factory stabilizer would push in about 3 inches with no resistance. Truck had 65,000 miles on it at the time. BTW, there is a huge difference in the tires. The Pirellis' are many many times better for traction on dry and wet roads!
I have a 2005 F250 SD 6.0 that did this to me the other day. 65000 miles and has had regular service on the service plan,e xact stock replacement tires. Truck is bone stock. I was going 65-70 mph and hit a pot hole and away she went. I let off and dragged the brakes until it slowed to about 50 mph and it slowly stopped. Took it to Ford and they told me that tire pressure was low and that recommended pressure was 75 psi on the fronts. Anybody found a surefire fix for this?
Problem solved. I wrote in 7 months ago. Front end stabilizer....dead. I got a new dual front end stabilizer AND I I bought and installed a second "Skyjacker" stabilizer. Took about an hour (and I am NO mechanic) to install. INSTANT FIXED!!!! Ford's stock stabilizer is weak and once big tires or lift (or both) happens....the stock stabilizer is worthless and rubs out and dies. >>> hence the "instant" problem that messes with our heads. The stock stabilizer wears out with a lift or tires
I have seen and ridden in a vehicle that has done this, its scary as hell. but it was not a ford, its a Jeep Grand Cherokee. i thought that only jeeps did this from all of the videos that i have seen.
I have seen people saying what the cause is , anything from ball joints, trackbar, worn bushings, steering links, and wrong size of tire.
My friends Jeep just started doing this (and its a 94), the first time it happened was when there was mud caked inside the rim, stock rim and correct tires on.
@sniper152 Dodge's are just as prone to this. I know because I own a Dodge that does this. Mine gets this about every 25 to 30 thousand miles because the track bar and steering stabilizer wear out. I replace those 2 parts and everything is great for another 25-30 thousand miles. Whats funny is my father's 98.5 has the original parts and doesn't DW, at 130,000 miles...
@BlueRollinCoal Mine has around 150,000 and has never done it, I did replace all the ball joints a few thousand miles ago. I went to 165/70-16 tires in place of the 145/ stockers though maybe that helped
I had this happen to me at least 6 times and 2 times in one night. We have 1 F550('05) and 2 F450('08 and '10) ambulances at work and they have all done it. Scared the crap out of me when it happened on a back road twice with a patient in the back of the ambulance.

My boss in his new 11 had this problem. The scariest thing on the road next to actually getting in a wreck.
He had an 06 that had the wobble and his brother had an 08 which also had the wobble. The 11 was by far the worst of the 3.
He took it to 3 different Ford dealers and after the 5th 'fix' they finally replaced everything in the front end and no more death wobble.

My 1999 ford 250 had over 200k miles on the front end and I never had this problem.. Before i changed the tie rods and ball joints there was only a slight swaying on the highway( it does have the front leaf spring setup).. This looks like your entire front end needs to be rebuilt.
ajsullyvincennes 9 months ago
i think the problem is the steering stabilizer, i have two dodges ram 2500 with the same problem, i changed the steering stabilizer for a pro comp double one....solved my problem.
userfe2008 9 months ago
In 2006 Ford introduced a coil spring front suspension to the f250, f350. If you own a superduty before 06 you will have a front leaf spring setup, therefore, you will not have this problem. This has nothing to do with wrong tire size, or it not having a diesel engine, or alignment. This is a production flaw, and there is a TSB about it. Ford calls it "cab shimmy" and "its a common characteristic of a truck with a solid front axle". Ford jumped the gun on the coils
jimlucie 9 months ago
I've seen the "death wobble" in just about every make of truck and ranging from 50's models till present. The reasons vary, but usually wrong size tires or worn or or aftermarket parts are to blame. Suck it up and fix it.

I’m having the same problem with my 2008 F-350 SRW. I love the truck but obviously this is a serious safety issue. Can someone please offer advice on correcting the issue?
canoequest2 11 months ago
PEOPLE. its because an f250 is designed for the diesel motor. when a gas engine is put in this truck, it loses 650 lbs over the front wheels. The overly rigid suspension mixed with the light engine weight causes imbalance. When a bump is encountered at high rates of speed the truck bounces uncontrollably.
davidbudine 11 months ago
@davidbudine Mine has a ten cylinder, I'm not sure how much more weight that is more than a V-8. Ford's TSB does indicate that the "Death Wobble" is more prevalent in gas models. However, Ford's internal emails, which I will make public on facebook , indicate that they have changed engine mount positions and added certain welds to see if that will help, but have only had minimal if any success. My problem is Ford WILL NOT fix, repair or reimburse for this problem, rather they fight it in court

kdraper2007 9 months ago
@LASCON01 why should they pay for your repair? you are using the wrong size tire, which is most likely the cause of the wobble. or your wheel camber is out of adjustment. either way it is improper maintanence that causes this.

@davidbudine actually this is a tire issue, either they are using the wrong size tires or the castor is out of proper adjustment. either way it is do to improper maintanence. looks like the owner is using aftermarket wheels & non standard sized tires. he's doing it to himself.
kdraper2007 9 months ago
@davidbudine Actually he just needs to get his steer tires spin balenced. I had this trouble on my International 9400I, much worse then what he has. I had the steer tires spin balenced & I haven't had any problems since.
kdraper2007 9 months ago
@davidbudine Youre an idiot. You think that 650lbs would cause that in a truck rated to tow thousands of pounds? No. People like you give other people a bad name.
TreySpooner 5 months ago
@davidbudine It doesnt only happen on f250's we have an f350 dually and it does it as well, i have to change the tires every six months.
ivan199120 4 months ago
@davidbudine Understandable. HOWEVER, I have a 2011 6.7 (the diesel engine) and I've had this happen to me twice yesterday and once today. I dropped it off at the dealer today and they said they would check it out. I am not a suspension or car expert by any means but what I've read says that it could be the steering dampener. I've also read that steering dampener just helps deal with the problems. It isn't necessarily the culprit. We will see what Ford says.
etrevino1031 4 months ago
@etrevino1031 ....I have had the exact same problem with my 1997 and 2000 F350 Diesels. New steering boxes, ball joints, center-link all were replaced. Finally when I put a Skyjacker dual steering stabilizer on both of them it stopped the problem. It is an inherent issue to the Ford 4x4s. I am not 100% sure if the stabilizer just masks the real problem though. Both trucks have a new front-end in them now. Not much left to change.

Never had this problem in my family... all 4 ford trucks in a row, spanning 26 years.
jet62095 1 year ago
@jet62095 Yeah, I've owned Ford trucks for 15 years and put 300k miles on them. Until ford redesigned the front end from leaf springs to coil springs I never had a problem either. Go to super duty wobble.com and go to the paragraph just under the picture for the after market repair kit for the "Death Wobble" and click on the bright green NHTSA link and watch the videos. Unfortunately for me after market repairs didn't become available until I was in some accidents and had to relinquish it.
LASCON01 1 year ago
You need to change your ball joints and that will fix it.
Glonty1991 1 year ago
@Glonty1991 The truck in the video is not my truck. My truck was brand new, they tried changing ball joints and it did nothing. Look at the NHTSA website. There are six of their test videos that show that they can easily replicate the problem, why they let Ford get away this is anybody's guess. I guess if you have enough money you can get away with anything. There are thousands of these dangerous trucks on the highways.
LASCON01 1 year ago
@Glonty1991 It is definitely a design problem. Ford's internal communications and their own "Core Vehicle Dynamics Report" show where the truck failed in all of it's performance categories on rough roads and even in some smooth road categories. Ford refers to as the "shake and wheel fight". It is a national fraud to produce an item for sale to the public and knowingly endanger our safety.

Totally unacceptable for a $45K truck. My 05 F250 had the same problem. Took it to the dealer multiple times. said i was tire pressure. still had the problem. Submitted the case to the national traffice board. spoke with them for well over an hour. They said Tire pressure . It happens more than people know!
ncprerunner 1 year ago
@ncprerunner I would like to talk to you and your employer. We have a lawsuit against Ford but their attorneys continually delay and don't allow a jury trial because they would lose big time. We need more participation from the many other owners with this problem and get Ford to own up to their responsibilities and either fix these trucks or take them off of the road in the interest of public safety. Please contact me at 321-795-1635 (Gerry)
LASCON01 1 year ago
@ncprerunner You can also email me at glaschober@cfl.rr.com their are thousands of these defective Ford F-250/350/450 Heavy Duty trucks with this problem that are daily/hourly endangering our lives and every body else that drives on our highways. Several persons won't allow their children to ride with them because they fear the violent shaking will injure them. I took mine off the road and "revoked acceptance". The dealer put it by the body shop and it was used for parts (I paid cash for mine).
