Wonderful! If you have ever tried to play one of these beasts, you will be as amazed as I at how wonderful he sounds playing that thing! I "owned" one for a while but alas, I made more money selling it than I did playing it! Amazing playing!
Beautiful playing. We've heard you on the radio from time to time. I can't help thinking, though, that the good looking organ in the background would have been a more appropriate accompanying instrument, supposing you could find an organist able to match the right stops to your fine trumpet!
where can I find a recording of ONLY a bari sax playing this? I have to do this piece for my solo in February on Bari sax and I have no clue where to find one
unfortunately even this is the wrong piece. It's just HORNPIPE, but luckily we have Smart Music so I found it. :) I'm pretty good. and thank you!!!! :)
Wonderful performance of Haendel's Water Music, in spite of a slight dismatch of picture and sound. Nevertheless, totally worth the applause at the end!
I don't profess to know much about classical music but I find Handel and Haydn's work peaceful..I am so glad I chose this piece as my prosessional music on my wedding day..
it's a baroque natural trumpet without valves but with three or four holes. With this trumpet only the overtones can be played like usual in the baroque era. Such instruments (Barocktrompete) are made by Neubauer or Egger for example.
Yup. Handling Handel is an actual action. But in the second part [Handel handle], the noun Handel is being turned into a verb. Being a name, it cannot be made into a verb, and vice versa for handle.
@foerster Handel was born in Germany, this much is obvious. His name growing up in Germany would have been Georg Friedrich Händel. However, I believe he became a subject of the British Crown, so why wouldn't he have changed his name to George Frideric Handel? It was probably more beneficial to him in the long run, considering his reputation in England.
@mtsumusic Plus, if you want to be technical about the umlaut over Handel's name in German, everyone spells Mozart's name as "Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart," but Mozart actually wrote his name Wolfgang Amadé Mozart for most of life, since everything "French" was fashionable in his time.

i'm learning to play this on the musical comb. it's a period comb, the very kind likely used by handel himself for his wigs, so it should sound authentic. i'm kind of a comb virtuoso.
No valve, but there is a hole that's covered and uncovered with the finger. I don't recall what effect the hole has on tuning. No clue what it's keyed in.
The only answer I can think of is double tonguing. I was never good enough to get it down but at my best I got it occasionally. It involves cutting off a note with the top of your tongue (as one would normally do it) and then with the middle of your tongue so it's almost wave-like. And it's damn hard to do!
Actually no, because a codern Piccolo trumpet which is commonly used in place of these natural trumpets is much smaller, say 1/3 of the size of that horn, and thus it is much more responsive. The longer the length of tubing in an instrument, the more time (literally) the sound takes to get from mouthpiece to bell, which means that this horn sounds less clear than it's modern counterpart, simply because it takes longer for the sound to exit the horn. It is historically accurate, though.

Unfortunately, my older clips are having synchonization problems and I haven't had any luck with anyone a Youtube offering to help.
The trumpet was, I believe, made by Crispian.

double toungeing has nothing to do with him playing trills and such on a natural trumpet...

It just looks like a 4-hole long model baroque trumpet in either the key of c modern or baroque c to me.
westerntrumpet 4 years ago
What is that instrument? I know it is not the regular modern trumpet I have seen a thousand times.
dgjiephfurreighR 4 years ago
It' a baroque valveless trumpet - thus the sound Handel intended. Horribly difficult to play I would imagine
hoof2001 4 years ago
The sound of a valveless trumpet is clearer though, isn't it?
Great performance.
