They had the power of the most powerful empire, Rome, behind them. They persecuted and even killed many of the original Christians that didn't go along with the changes to original doctrine. The Bible does not say the earth is a few thousand years old or does it say the sun revolves around the earth or that the earth is flat. It was the Bible that gave Columbus the idea that the earth is round when it talks about the circle of the earth. It was Joshua that asked the sun and moon to stand still. He had no way of know what revolved around what. He was mistaken not Gods word. The timeline the Bible gives is about 6000 yrs. It does not say the earth is any age! NOBODY KNOWS!!
