We no longer have the infrastructure to get even one of the Iowa class BB's back in the fleet. Even if we were to cannibalize the other 3, it still would not be enough. Then there is one other issue: Her crew. She was decom'd in 1992. Thats 20 years ago. We would have to recall retirees to crew, and train other Sailors on her systems.

@LadySierraSays I took the Ferry Boat from Seattle (early 80s) one day to go see Mighty Mo in retirement, in Bremerton - walked from the Bremerton Ferry Boat Dock and back, no cars, no people. Yes the Missouri was involved in heavy bombardment in Korea, It was the only one of the four Iowas not mothballed after WWII, although the other three were brought back to fight in that conflict as well. It was also the first one mothballed at the end of the conflict. It also would have problem taking out a CBG either, as while the CBG could shoot down the Harpoons or Tomahawks, there would be no stopping the 2700lb. AP shell that was coming in at mach 2.5
Missouri did conduct shore bombardment at Inchon, Korea. I was told that the shells we fired in 1991 Gulf War were manufactured in the 1950's for the Korean War. Must have a long shelf life.

Some Tomahawks can travel over 1,000 miles. These were fired at targets some 500 miles away, and took around an hour to reach their destination.
We fired our missiles, then tuned in to CNN (radio only) to listen to the war begin. It was strange knowing that something big was happening before the rest of the world knew.

@billgx is it true that because of the tomahawks navigation which uses terrain(well the new ones use gps) but the older ones in gulf war didnt fly straight to baghdad or w/e but flew over irans west side mountains otherwise they would get lost in baghdads flat terrain

@lmola501 I can't say for sure because I was a gun tech, not a Tomahawk tech. I do know, as you mentioned, they followed the ground terrain for navigation, so it would make sense they followed a path with some varied terrain, rather than flying a shorter path over flat desert.
I'll never forget the day we launched these. We listened to CNN radio from Baghdad after we'd launched our birds. For an hour, everything was calm, but we knew sorties were on the way. Then all hell broke loose.

Yes and no. The story was set aboard the USS Missouri, but mostly filmed aboard the USS Alabama. When I saw this film, I didn't recognize any of the interior spaces because it wasn't my ship.

To answer a few comments posted. Yes the Missouri was involved in heavy bombardment in Korea, It was the only one of the four Iowas not mothballed after WWII, although the other three were brought back to fight in that conflict as well. It was also the first one mothballed at the end of the conflict. It also would have problem taking out a CBG either, as while the CBG could shoot down the Harpoons or Tomahawks, there would be no stopping the 2700lb. AP shell that was coming in at mach 2.5

Missouri did conduct shore bombardment at Inchon, Korea. I was told that the shells we fired in 1991 Gulf War were manufactured in the 1950's for the Korean War. Must have a long shelf life.

There were some civilians aboard during the Gulf War but not many. My first college prof. Reagan Ragsdale was a civilian aboard during the war & taught English & Literature. I earned my first college credits aboard the Mo'.

Eurofighter, and I think he means the Harrier. It's a British design but the one the US Marines use is made entirely in the US apart from the engine which is shipped over from Blighty. They're a bit bigger than British Harriers because they're used in a slightly different roll in the Marines than the RAF/Royal Navy.

No the Tornado is an MRCA. Very good bomber, crap at everything else. We do have some other good kit though, and saved the Mighty Mo's arse in 1991 Just look up HMS Gloucester (D96) on wiki. Also Challanger 2 MBT is FAR batter than M1A1. Scored a kill at a range of 5.2km in Desert Storm.
