  • oil pan is NO MORE now its a parts bin :D

  • did i hear b16 head? if so correction d16y8 head.lol

  • Omg my wifes cat just took a shit. Nasty ass cats

  • Awesome!!!!!!!

  • what the hell happened to this engine to get like that?

  • @SteelCity1981 From the looks of it, it seems that who ever owned it absolutely never changed or added oil, so the pure heat from the friction made it melt, warp, and virtually as you see it now lol.

  • @jmartr34 people like that should never be able to drive a car for such abuse!

  • @SteelCity1981 I totally agree!

  • @jmartr34 Damn shame too i have a 2000 ford ranger with 250,000 miles on it and other then changing out the sprk plugs and the spark plug wiring and doing regular maintenance on it like changing the oil with synthetic, changing out the air filter, tranny fluid and brake fluid and brakes, i've never had one single issue with it.. Hopefully i'll be able to get 500,000 miles on it, but even then sicne it's been such a good truck to me i'll prob end up replacing the engine then sell it.

  • are you sure thats a B16? looks more like a D16, B are DOHC D's are SOHC like that one. to get all technical on you its a D16Y7 non-Vtec. you can get the pistons from a 89' integra and the D16Y8 Vtec head and put it all together with that block and you'll have a 12.5:1 compression beast.

  • i have a 1988 toyota pickup with a 22re. the last guy replaced the timing chain tensioner but left the plastic remains in. the remains clogged the oil pickup and starved the engine. rod #3 had the ebaring welded to the crank. i sanded all the aluminum off plasiguaged it put all new bearings and cylinder head in.. IT RUNS LIKE A EFFFIN CHAMP

  • DO YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENS LARRY

  • thank you for this entire series! the past couple hours have been very entertaining!

  • vtec kicked in

  • @10yroldcarlover vtec kicked out.....

  • @lostfinder333 literally lol

  • I have seen a Chrysler 3.7 blown up on purpose, the debtor did it.Knew it was getting repoed and blew the engine up.Leaks not caught in time kill engines too.I have replaced an engine in a Honda because it got so hot, leaking radatior and the driver drove it this way.

  • careful with that hammer! You don't want to break something!

  • what the hell happen, they for got to change the oil.

  • @jh3835 I think they just let it run with no oil for too long.

  • I used to own Honda civics but now drive Toyota cars. I got tired of the same troubles over and over. Plus I like dohc engines.

  • that shit will buff out

  • C'mon man. It wasn't that dead. You coulda at least tried a little jb-weld to fix it.

  • I would love to work with you all day haha

  • Wow that engine must have been driven hard.

  • Mechanic quote of the day: "You see what happens ______ (insert name)?, you see what happens?"

  • nice video i like it very much.

  • Eric your my hero =DDDDD

  • @kurama10271 Back at cha. :)

  • @EricTheCarGuy thanks eric =) a girl can really ocunt on you to help out also i learned an oxygen sensor is a hell of ALOT more important than i ever thought possible lol it took me a while to find mine it was literally behind my engine below where the spark plugs are lol, makes a durastic difference in performance and in gas mileage, plus the way mine was it broke apart so exhaust was coming into the cabin, it sucked lol, thanks again Eric the car guy =))))

  • @kurama10271 count*

  • Eric, how expensive is it to get air tools?

  • @kurama10271 Depends on the quality and where you get them. I consider tools more of an 'investment' than an 'expense' because the right tool will actually make you money.

  • @EricTheCarGuy that's a valid point

  • @EricTheCarGuy so true but damnit, i just cant invest enough, fast enough :)

  • why are there chunks coming out of the engine? :O

  • @Mr44centz Not sure, think maybe we should check the oil?

  • @EricTheCarGuy oh does that happen when you dont change the oil?

  • This question is irrelevant to this one particular vid, but what brand/model camera do you film with, and what editing software do you use? Video quality and production quality is always superb, so just wondering. Thanks.

  • @brandon804va The cameras I use are Sony HDR-SR11's and I edit with Final Cut Pro.

  • do you believe in snap on tools? what tools do you use?

  • @Choirboyjr11 I have tools from a lot of different companies including Snap-on, I pretty much go for what works for what I'm doing, with hand tools however I think it's best to get the best you can afford as they will pay for themselves over time.

  • wow

  • Don't you just love the smell of 20 year old pre-assembly lube on head bolts in the morning?!?

  • @dudeitsknate Yep sure do.

  • D16 head?...not B16...D16 is the single cam Eric....no worries... :)

  • @ShinNeo2012 Good catch, I realized that after I started editing. Thanks for pointing that out.

  • oooooooooohhhh my gaawwwwd ohhh mmmahhh gaaaaaaad you spilled the antifreeze ooooh my gaaaaawww .... hehe just kidding

    BEST TEACHER EVERRR

  • @marsL001 THAT is very much appreciated, thank you.

  • Such a sad sight. It breaks my heart that someone would let their engine get this terrible if they really needed a car and cared about personal transportation.

  • @Rogers1977 Some people don't, keeps me in work though. :)

  • @EricTheCarGuy This is true. By the way, I'm picking up a Civic in this generation. Any common problems I should watch out for?

  • @Rogers1977 Nothing major really, just keep it in the good oil and use Honda parts wherever possible.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Cool deal.

  • a piece of crankshaft should have hit whoever was driving this in the shin as punishment for doing this to that engine

  • @kolby4078 What if she had nice legs?

  • @EricTheCarGuy it will heal eventually

  • @EricTheCarGuy Then it should have hit her in the nuts!

  • Get some JB weld on that and it'll be good as new.

  • @mckinneymdq You are correct, I misspoke when I said that. Thanks for keeping me on my toes.

  • Eric that is so funny at 1:00 I have the same engine from a 2002 Civic LX with the same size hole on Cylinder #1 and I know how that happen because my brother drive so hard all the time and forcing the car to move and when? you don't change your oil frequently that the cylinder rod start to heat up so bad and get warp and "BAM" out go the cylinder rod through the engine bay.

dSyEND UNLIMITED FkREE S M S TO ANY BlODY AT bit.ly\nD5kSa

  • What I can tell you and this might be true is that who ever you swap? that engine from was driving it very hard all day and all night without worrying that their engine will break down one day. The harder you drive and don't even car about changing your oil and that will one day will happen to any car. Your cylinder rod will break and people will be out of $2,000 or more for a brand new engine.

rSdEND UNLIMITED FqREE S M S TO ANY BmODY AT bit.ly\nD5kSa

  • you can force any engine to go if you only use Amsoil and Amsoil use to sell in Oreilly Auto but not anymore.

  • Eric, I noticed with engines 1997 on wards here in Australia, especially fords that the valve cover gaskets are now made of rubber. I am replacing the one of my EL falcon, did I need to spread a thin layer of say RTV gasket blue silicon on both the valve cover and engine block? or can I just put the new rubber gasket on dry? I ask because the guy at coventrys said I could put it on dry, but not sure. cheers Jeremy

  • @Fianmaus

He specified that the engine was a b1 as in or d15b1. He never said b16. Which yes your right it's b series. But either way I would have confused myself as well if I didn't know what he was talking about.

  • TWO WORD... "OIL STARVATION"

  • What I can tell you and this might be true is that who ever you swap that engine from was driving it very hard all day and all night without worrying that their engine will break down one day. The harder you drive and don't even car about changing your oil and that will one day will happen to any car. • @MileyCyrus192 I agree, I think it was just neglect that brought us to this point. Thanks for the comments.

  • @erichasp DON'T REPEAT WHAT PEOPLE SAID ALREADY

  • Take the crank pulley bolt out... that should be entertaining :P

  • probably thought a let but on Nos and press a button and go fast.

  • nice vid thanks for that !!!

  • that happened to a 4-AGE engine from an old corolla i bought off someone real cheap those are easy to work on

  • i dont want to sound like i know more than the car guy, but, i think thats a d-15, not a b-16... B series motors are DOHC, while D series are SOHC. and the 98-01 civics were all variants of the D-15

  • @TheWyatt007 Your 100% right because I misspoke when I said that. Good ear man, thanks for the comment.

  • @EricTheCarGuy I was going to say, "Wait, B16s were only in the Si in a 98 Civic." But someone beat me to the punch. This looks like a D series. What happened to this engine? It looks like a piston rod broke inside the cylinder.

  • @Rogers1977 To be honest, I'm not an expert on engines yet, but I'm working on it.

  • eric if the pistons kiss the valves, will the pistons be ok to still run if you changed the valves?

  • @h2cker I've done that very thing many times without incident so I would say yes.

  • i think u should hang that piston over the door of your new shop,as a reminder to all your customers, pay the mechanic a little amount to service your car regularly, and hopefully you wont have to pay for big stuff like this!

  • @TrueBlueEG8 I actually gave it to a friend but I like the way you think.

  • oil is cheap, but motors are expensive. change your oil.

  • @AGreedyTree Excellent point.

  • Speaking of the trophy piston, my buddy has one from his 02 mustang GT he popped a 12 psi vortech onto few years back, and ran it with a moderately leanish tune on it. Took off down the track and we were all standing about half way down, he hit 3rd gear and we heard what sounded like a pillow exploding. Upon towing it home and tearing it down, we found the #8 piston was in pieces and the rod was barely recognizable lol. The hyper-pathetic piston didn't like that boost or the tune too well.

  • @Feenyxxx95 Outch. A friend of mine that I used to work with had one out of a Porsche that had exploded due to lack of oil, he used it as an ashtray. Thanks for your comment.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Haha, thats a hell of an ashtray. Good idea on his part.

  • Hey, Eric. What size compressor do you recommend for a 5CFM @90psi 1/2" impact? Also, do you recommend "JDM" imported engines? Im about to replace my F22B1 from my 94 accord EX with one and wondering if its all hype and the mileage ratings are lies. Currently pushing 300k on original motor and tranny.

  • @conflustered It is kind of sad and cool all at the same time. Thanks for the comment.

  • @lockewklhl Actually I think it was an EX as the DX's I don't think came with VTEC. Thanks for the comment.

  • @annakowcc I think they just ignored the oil light and kept driving till it died. Neglect has been the cause of many an automotive failure in my experience. Thanks for the comment.

  • a b16 head? it looks like a d to me! proper destruction, almost certainly down to poor servicing, and neglect, hondas never give up ,unless u go out of ur way to kill them. great vid.

  • @TrueBlueEG8 Your right it is a D, I just misspoke and didn't catch it till after I was doing the edit. Thanks for the comment.

  • ha thats awsome unfortunatly i see hondas b16 b18 etc motors just as bad if not worst... turboing a honda is fun... but never seems to last to long

  • @Robbbert22 Pretty much anytime you gout outside what something was made for you run the risk of breaking something in my experience. Thanks for the comment.

  • What did the guy do? Redline it too much thus blowing the engine? That's usually the main cause of a blown engine. Connecting rod punching through it lol

  • This a DX Honda I take it Eric? Thats what I got ...only I make sure I have OIL!!! LMFAO. poor engine...and #1 Piston...nice keeper.

  • @tiker646 I think it was an LX or EX actually but I don't remember either way they all need oil. :)

  • In your new shop set up a case for parts like that piston so that some day you can show off all the things that can go wrong when you ignore basic maintenance. "The case of carnage"? Just an idea.

  • @mechguy83 I like the idea but the piston has already been spoken for, I do have some other goodies though. Thanks for the comment.

  • Yeah, best part was when we were laughing at how dumb he was his wife asked what happened, she was not a happy camper, you know the bit about not using any oil etc. She started to put 2 & 2 together and lets say it was better than TV.

  • Old pistons make great smoking ashtrays!

  • @siemenstraffic I quit 7 years ago but it would have been good to use then.

  • So what is the back story on that engine? I mean it ran dry? The owner ran it until it blew up? I understand that it could seize up (that one bearing is all torn to hell) but I don't understand how the rod blew up. My best guess is that it seized on the crank (refused to turn) and then the cylinder got primed and detonated and blew it to hell?

Great tear down. That poor engine. I bet it screamed before it died. Poor thing.

  • @youtubasoarus

Yes Im curious to about what happened to this engine. So basically its oil was never changed and eventually it ran dry which caused it to overheat which then in turn can melt certain parts causing the engine to seize? Possibly stopping parts that dont want to be stopped (like the piston rod) and causing them to break? Im all curious about this, also what would cause the massive holes in the block? Surly that broken rod pieces couldnt of caused that

  • @thetcfoust actually, you'd be surprised how large a hole can be made in the block when a piece of alloy flies apart at 3,000 odd RPM ;)

  • @TheAstro30

True, lol I didnt think of it that way

  • @youtubasoarus I think it was just driven till it died as I don't think the owner put much thought into it. I think after the oil ran dry and things started to heat up they began to come apart, I think the connecting rod cap came apart first and once that happened and metal started flying the rest is history as they say. Thanks for the comment.

  • I remember back when my sockets used to stay on my air guns. That was nice. Well Larry.. are you happy now? You've killed it. killed it dead. lol

  • @briansmobile1 Over the line for sure.

  • Hello,Eric. If there were no hols in the pan, clean it, and check the mounting surface. If that is flat, part that out. Ditto for the head. I had the bypass hose leak, and barely over temped my original D15B7. Inside of a year, the HG went. Hondas do not like heat. Put in a newer D15b, running strong again.

  • @Blargaldalien The pan actually had a crack in it that's why I didn't keep it. Thanks for the comment.

  • other than toyota, where could i order a new alternator harness for a 2001 tacoma 6 cyl/3.4L???

  • @MrAnthony78666 Salvage yard?

  • @EricTheCarGuy thank u...

  • Is the damage solely from running it dry?

  • @brakedd I believe it is.

  • For those that going to say what has the diff got to do with it, these engines had the G/B under the engine, shared oil. Asked him if the oil slick wasn't a bit of a clue, it didn't appear to be though. Went on to do a PHD. Was going to save some stuff but he got rid of them as he thought I would continue to torment him with them, which I would. Kept head as well and put it on his next engine

  • Years ago had a friend tell me his 'A' series Austin was using oil, asked him was it leaking, "no" he says. Week later calls me and says it went slower till it stopped...

Outside his house big oil slick on the road. Stripped it down (laughing), crankshaft had started to turn blue, bigends welded to the rods, but still went round, for a while. Worn G/B (I had said to fix) had dropped a ball bearing, caught in the diff worn groove and very small hole, in diff housing.

  • @bunning63 That is an odd series of events, thanks for sharing that info.

  • i took apart a couple of these for scrap thank you Honda for using aluminum lol

  • Great video!! Wonder if them valves got bent? Engine is toast!LOL

  • @EricWaterTruck I'm sure they did and the head may be toast too but I'll look into it if I ever have cause to use it, if it's junk I'll use it in a video at some point on how to replace valves.

  • That is just nasty! So the oil was just neglected for years or a known leak/burning oil was not monitored ? I mean usually when engines are low on oil, well if it works you should have an indicator light/gauge, but wouldnt you also hear the noise ?!

  • @hubbleISS I think the light came on and was ignored.

  • Thanks for the vid Eric. I love seeing engine teardowns. Helps me learn.

  • @djnormal I like doing them, it's fun.

  • Great was that sleeved? Thanks for all the vids their awesome

  • @johnc12344321 No, I have a feeling the engine had never been apart before.

  • I have a 1991 Civic which the previous owner neglected. The air filter was clogged and the combustion chamber is all choked up with carbon deposits. Is there anyway of cleaning it without doing a top end rebuild? I want to get back some of the lost compression.. It runs ok but could be better

  • @Gruxxan In a situation like that the damage is really already done, just drive it till it dies and replace it is what I would recommend.

  • @EricTheCarGuy ok thanks for the recommendation

  • Must have made a hell of a racket before it blew. Its sad that some (most) people dont take care of their cars. We see them come into our shop with at least a quart low on oil almost daily. We used to add a quart as a courtesy, but now we just tell the people that their low on oil.

  • @int53185 I know what you mean but I've adopted the philosophy that they just keep me in work and don't try to change them as my past efforts have fallen on deaf ears. Thanks for the comment.

  • hey Eric the automobile guy, what about the low oil engine warning? how did this happen without the tool driving the car seeing the light? or was the light off or damaged?

  • @luisloks I think it came on and was ignored.

  • Nice video's Eric, I like your channel a lot! Especially the hands on stuff! However I was wondering about the cylinder head you might want to reuse some day. As the engine died of "slow" oil starvation, I would expect the head/camshaft/valve guides to have major damage too. I'm not familiar with Honda engines, but if there is an upper camshaft running in journals I would expect that to be severely damaged. What are your thoughts about this? Regards from The Netherlands!

  • @kvcuijck Excellent point, the good thing about the top end of these engines is that the cam sits in a troth of oil that feeds most of the moving parts up there, sure it could still be damaged but really the only place this head would come in handy is to get a car running for cheep, I would not install this on a customer car without showing them this video first. Thanks for your comment.

  • R.I.P. little brother.....you did your duty beautifully..little 4...too bad the one who controlled your digestive track fed you NOTHING,,,,,

  • @hondaslave lol.

  • poor engine :(

  • That'll buff right out!

  • Thanks eric, I'll be sure to keep oil in my del slow. By the way is the crank shaft seal hard to replace on these engines? (the D16's i mean.)

  • @creitz91 You need to get the transmission out for the rear and the timing belt off for the front one.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Naturally, I have a project, I have to replace the crank and was just wondering what the seals were like I've never had to mess with them or even look at them.

  • I would appreciated if u can upload videos on 95 civics...thnx for sharing your knowledge..am very greatful

  • @mccobras20 The videos I make are based on what comes into the shop, I have no control.

  • Interesting video. Learning a lot from this. Thanks a lot ERIC!

  • This engine looks very good. Glue those bastards together, put it back in the car, and crank it up LOL.

  • That is most definitely a D series and not a B series 1.6 L

  • @undrawday Your right, I screwed up.

  • How did the engine run out of oil? How long did it take for this damage to happen? We fired a student from the local automotive technical school for failing to put oil back in while doing an oil change.

  • @bhstone1 I think it was burning oil and ran low, I have no idea how long that took. Every place I've ever worked hand an oil incident of one type or another, it just happens unfortunately.

  • i ordered my honda lightly toasted, not burn to hell. seriously, i thought my honda was f-ed up, oh no, thats f-ed up.
