I think the song refers to his current situation. Go Either Way meaning that his life could be great or it could get worse. He's somewhat in trouble either financially or emotionally and he needs help, but he can't get help. Also, the lyrics, "everyone's eyes, looking upon me, to provide, to provide"

shows that he has to support other people.

Overall regardless of what you think this song is great, and I really wish that they would put it on Itunes.

I think that the old man is dying and the title Go Either Way is refering to either the path of his life, or refering to heaven or hell. Some may think the beginning of the song may I have nothing to do with that theme or idea but I think the beginning is being sorta sarcastic
