  • all hope is not lost. there are 20 somethings out here that know the roots of alternative rock.

  • what girl did he miss out on anyway? I don't know what mine took (yet) but i geuss my song would go sort of like. "You did n't want to have my miniature poetry book of Friedrich Holderlin, you wanted shit in stead" its a lot more psychotic from me and my clip believe me.

  • and preferably before the queen dies you know

  • well on john stewart some dude wrote a book on older presidents and leaders being insane and this be very beneficial for problem solving and sound government, and this guy is definatly insane JOHNNY ROTTEN FOR NR TEN!!!!!!

  • in this video, johnny seems like McDonald's clown.

  • This song frightened the fuck out of me when i heard it first.1981 I believe.

    Lydon is crazy on this!

  • Just a Johnny Fan, don't matter Pistols or PIL

  • Flowers of Romance was the name of Sid;s band before he joined the Sex Pistols.

  • @80s90ssports Sid Vicious & Keith Levene + a couple guys who are now in the slits

  • Bloody brilliant! love the dynamic theatrics from a very charismatic performer!!!!

  • what the fuck????

  • the british are lucky (should be thankful) they had colonies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @2tonsolid Thank God, they did. Who else would use so many exclamation points?

  • Super fantastic. This is what it's all about boys and girls-taking musical risks.

  • this still really cuts it, and thats after 30 years. What a track

  • 80年代、混沌突入のひとつだな!~パブリック・イメージ・LTD~私も、30才前になり、戸惑いもったポストパンク~FLOWERS OF ROMANCE!

  • i think that... you do not give one flying fuck what i think.

  • as a drummer my self loved this album but then again jim walker always had something diffrent about his drumming

  • Quite possibly the most unsettling song ever to reach the charts. This is a classical masterpiece, sadly the like fo which will never see commercial success again thanks to the Cowell mafia.

  • @CONSIDERABLYMORE1 thanks to the whata whata?

  • unbelievable sucked sound.

  • This album is fucking excellent. Their last good album imho.

  • Mr. Lydon's uniqueness always got me high!

  • Seminal album. I was 22 and loving the change from punk to post-punk to New Wave/Techno scene. For those who didn't live through this era, there's nothing to compare it to. Such new, experimental changes to pop-culture (as opposed to pop) music just haven't been expressed since those times. We had Rock 'n Roll that swooped in & and changed during the 50's... Revolutionary changes throughout the 60's the, again, through the 70's. The 80's moved as fast. Where's the subculture revolution gone?

  • @irynski it's called dubstep, bitch.

  • Comment removed

  • @leakeg You silly rabbit!

  • such a weird album, but such a great one as well

  • I 2nd Rotten for PM!

  • rotten for prime minister!

  • sex pistols were great largely because of lydon's massive brain and weird energy. in PIL he got to show it all off even more. there is no one like him. so clever.

  • top of the pops gave away bigger pens than crackerjack.....

  • Way back in the day when Lydon still had an edge about him and something to say. This album was the last real music they made even though Wobble had left the band by then. The older John Lydon gets the dumber, irrelevant and more embarrassing he becomes. Sad.

  • @Koalar3 I wish he'd just chill and stop wanking on about how "honest" he is. I'd love to see an interview where he isn't trying so hard...A few exist.. I'll always be a fan though-to a degree !!

  • @Koalar3 I've found the opposite to be true. I've seen many interviews in the last 5 to 10 years where he has been just as brilliant and poignant. Did you happen to see an American talk show where he did a great talk on racism with an African American actor? Did you read his book? I think his message is still clear.

  • i lik john both bands

  • I like all, i mean the sex pistols, sid vicious and the white kids, p.i.l and flowers of romance ^^ i think they all are great as well, johnny rotten aka john lydon has this genious voice and the man is genious!

  • @Darkangelrock92

Let's not forget the Professionals! Hearing Paul and Steve w/o the attention whores shows you just how much they contributed to the 'Pistols!

  • This is a awesome song.

  • @SlimBoyArcadeFire big fan of pil ?? if this is rubbish what was bettter ?(excluding the metal box )

  • last great pil single, look at those fuckin cretins lolling about in the audience hadent got a fuckin clue neither did 99. 9 per cent of rock fans, enter this is not a love song problem solved, . lower intelligece 99per cent, 99% understand and think its a return to real music. !!!!!!!!! to sum up, metal box and flowers albums for people with a real understanding of music, anything after that is for the mass herd of cretins who just follow any old bollocks there tiny minds can understand.

  • Oh man I LOVED this as a teen. This album was so weird but we thought it was a good weird, its not about the talent its about the feelings it evokes. After the boring 3 chord Sex Pistols stuff, I was happy to hear Lydon go freaky, like underground freaky. Great memories, cool stuff.

  • john really???

  • I think Flowers of Romance was their best album. This and Memories from Metal Box/Second Edition are my favourite singles. Although I like the later material 1978-81 was the best period. Pistols/Banshees/Slits connection is an amazing journey of twists and turns. Flowers of Romance being a Pistols overture that gave Sid his band name that included future Slits and PiL members. And of course Sid's involvement with Banshees half of whom who appeared on Today with the Pistols. Not to mention Ari Up

  • Ive been foll PIL since this came out,

  • just look at the psychedelic special effects and hypnotic sound

  • this sounds like a total drug/druggy typeof a song-if this was johns way as a tribute to sid-- i find that very odd-given john is very against drugs and drug use

  • @yourkickspuppies what !!!!!! johnny was one of the biggest dope smokers on the planet for at least a decade and has been a consumer of lager for forty years daddy needs to tell you something..............

  • @yourkickspuppies drugs usually do not make a musician talented...it is conscious as well as open state that brings real creativity. Drugs are for the weak of mind...and i am pleased that a very creative and talented as well as non-conformist person like Johnny Rotten is against drugs....he is very smart

  • To think that this dogshit made it to number 24 in the UK charts. Lydon sounds like he's making it up as he goes along. Just goes to show that there's no beginning to his talents.

  • @MichaelMacer you thick rugby worshipping arsehole.

  • @MichaelMacer WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN ? 'THERES NO BEGINING TO HIS TALENTS' ? ???

  • WTF, this is just crap. The Sex Pistols had a message and good music. This is pointless noise.

  • @RUDEDOGGIE65 This has a message too.

You only close your mind to hear it.

  • @RUDEDOGGIE65 above your intellect, try harder.. p.s what was the sex pistols message ?

  • thank god for butter! Otherwise they would not be on tour now ;) saw their gig in sweden, and gosh they are still tight maan!

  • @missSuchashame PIL finished 28 years ago

  • @birdandthe And that means the music still doesn't live on?

  • his music was always awful, apart from god save the queen. But Johnny as a person is a fucking legend

  • This song (and album) would of been much better with Wobble's throbbing basslines.

  • @MOSTechnology shouldent have been a big baby and fucked off to do mediocre drivel then should he ?

  • @birdandthe Was you there in 1980 then?

  • @MOSTechnology flowers was 81, i was at their gig in leeds in 1979 at the joke futurama gig, pil were funny that night, joy division were outstanding

  • Johnny looks insane. How does he keep his eyes looking like that?

  • @astrox13

I read in his book that a lot of his staring comes from when he had meningitis.

  • that voice just make you go into trans..lovely,lovely,lovely!

  • Thumbs up if u love wobble!!!

  • i love this song .....its a shame when you think of the stupid music you here these days ......whats happened to you music?!!

  • The early stuff is the best. It's a shame so many bands let themselves be watered down in the 80's for mass consumption. A guy's gotta eat I suppose.

I find it hard to believe that Lydon even considered having Sid join up in this band. They eventually just left him unplugged for all the pistols gigs because he never even learned to play anything. In fact, the only things Sid Vicious was good at were jumping in one spot and whoring out his tart of a gf so they can afford the next bump.

  • Would be better with some bass i think.

  • This song is about his old mate Sid:

I can't depend on these so called friends

It's a pity you need to defend

I'll take the furniture and start all over again

I love PIL but to me they never reached Pistols level, and John's voice was never as good as his Rotten days - just listen to the original Did you no wrong...So fresh and powerfull maaannn.

  • So glad someone agrees with me. ^^

I adore PIL, but as for Lydon's vocal progression, I feel that as PIL flowed into the 80s and beyond, his voice began to lose the flavour of rebellion that it possessed in the Pistols. For the albums First Issue & Metal Box, I feel that his vocals still are as excitingly raw as they were in the Pistols days, and I think that the 'warbling wail' he began to adopt for 'Flowers of Romance' was appropriate for the album's primal sound. But it's become too much. :/

  • "Low Life" from P.i.L.'s First Issue was about Sid. Needless to say, it wasn't a compliment!

  • I've found that I'm a much bigger PiL fan than I am a Pistols fan.

  • @blackesteyes13 Me too! Pistols didn't give you much to listen to after the initial shock.

  • @blackesteyes13 same here, I feel like that the music PiL makes was actually real, and Sex Pistols were just a pretty generic fad, like anyway other massively popular act.

  • @findingphunc and this one is one of the best, very creative...i would say in between the rules of music....it does not sound pop or rock n roll at all......it is really an experimentation

  • @blackesteyes13 - same here, PIL was very experimental and wasn't afraid to push the limits

  • @blackesteyes13 Your biggest mistake is thinking.

  • @blackesteyes13 el punk era mucho para vos, al igual que Rotten. Pedazo de puto.

  • Reminds me of "The Glove" (Severin/Smith)

  • just have to say something, sid vicious was in the original siouxsie and the banshees line up for a 5 minute set, sid actually played drums for them, he had no rhythm severin couldnt play bass siouxsie just shouted. but the crowd wanted more! pretty sure sid was in flowers of romance after sex pistols... could be wrong about that bit but had to clarify my dear sioux was not in the flowers of romance :)

  • Why did PIL go downhill after this? -seems like Lydon realised he could get big business money, pizzas, blowjobs in NY if only he ditched the arty/abstruse fringe angle.

"Johnny baby, they just won't go for that over here. Want a line?"

  • I think It´s great! Love the drums! Cheers!!

  • .........no.....

  • Its almost a nomadic chant of random thoughts..whatever he intended floats my boat. Johny I'll give you chocolates unless you want flowers instead.

  • great lyrics-- describes love relationships well.

Very tribal/primal. Maybe this is why Mr. Rotten.Lydon felt PiL was a great outlet for him- less confining than Sex Pistols was.

More PiL? Great idea!! Looking forward to the new work in 2010/2011.

  • he reminds me of sid vicious a lot, espicially his voice

  • He doesn't sound like Sid at all. Lydon sang almost all the Sex Pistol songs anyways.

  • Oh Good God

  • FLOWERS is my fave great tribal beats & perfect for lydons wailing- BESTOFPILIMP

  • John lidon is a genius!This a great song!

  • any catchy tunes, like the glen matocks dazs...

  • I think Sid played drums at Flowers of Romance, also for one or two gigs with Siouxsie & The Banshees.

  • Sid was already dead at the time of flowers of romance.

  • @Moctipotili flowers of romance was the name of the first band of sid vicious... in it there was also siouxsie

  • Keith levine seen here was also in flowers of romance,I don't think siousie was, wasn't it Viv from the slits from what I remember.I'm sure the only time sid and siouxsie played together was the first 100 club show as Siouxsie & the Banshees doing the lords prayer.could be wrong though as I'm a going senile old punk.

  • @Ayrshirenutter mmm... i'm sorry i don't remember ... but i think you're right

  • The album was definitely '81, but I think the single might have been 1980. Its not the same mix as the album, and the B side "Home is Where The Heart Is" featured Steve New who left before they made the album. Regarding the live stuff, the band that included Bruce Smith and Lu Edmonds did a killer live version of this between '86 and '92. Levene was a great musician, but he ripped the rest of them off (Commercial Zone) to get money for drugs. And John has given his reasons for not having Wobble.

  • Yeah he wrote this song as a tribute to Sid. It was the name of Sid's band with Viv Albertine (which never did anything 'cause he landed the job in the Pistols).

  • Brilliant! but I could have sworn this song came out in April 1980, NOT 1981.

  • NO ORIGINAL MEMBERS IN PIL 2009 line up . I cant even be bothered!!!!!!!!!!

  • i would not expect rotten to sing this song.. the lyrics.. not bad though

  • There's a strong Doors influence to this track. Great song!

  • Was always an occassion to see Lydon on totps

  • Irony? A challenge there are focals on the top of Box Hilll

  • sex pistols had a demo called flowers of romance, or was it live? I can't remember, it was just them banging on all their instruments

  • Sid had a band called Flowers of Romance with people from the Slits. The song Religion was written on the Sex Pistols U.S. tour in 1978. The band (PIL)was suppose to be with John and Sid but when Sid came back all fucked up for the last show in SF in 78 John said that's it! The Album Flowers of Romance by PIL was for Sid.

  • @DickVain41 sid was in the band, was the first incarnation of souixe....sid was the show...not the talant....its hard to say hos johnny really felt about sid. but flowers of romance was amazing......and sid was sadly gone.

  • @kikkinbut sid was never in ANY band ! he was just a twat with zero talent who hung around malcolms arse and wallet.

  • @DickVain41 Really Dick? And then what happened?

  • excellent tune

  • forgot to add - I still have PIL in the newspaper sleeve - another great tune.

  • awesome tune that I thought that I had forgotten. Thanks for posting.

  • flowers of romance was a album and sid is doing butter adds

  • i would pay to see a dead guy selling butter.i would not 2 be in the same room he would not smell 2 good

  • What happened to him ? Imho someone so talented should be a big star now ?

  • this song is bout sid vicous

  • no its not, lol. his old band was the flowers of romance but this has NOTHING to do with sid, lol

  • 'who's a greenhorn...what's a greenhorn!!!???' - H. Simpson

  • Dear proper Grammer people, sorry for not typing things in the correct way :)))))))))))))))))!!!!

  • Grammer - LOL. Love the irony

  • I do what I want? if i want to put JJJJJJJJJJJ a whole bunch of these down! or speil something wrong :) I can't care! funny how some people point that out? is it important?? JJJJJJJJJ VAGVGUJAYYHHH Burp

  • you're a punk.

  • I'm not a punk, just someone who is himself with honest opinions :) I love Pils music

  • Do we have a Greenday fan in the distance below by any chance? I had an argument with one before :) their views didn't matter :) because they like to brand themselves! I'm a punk im a Greenday fan!! that don't mean anything to me? and let me mention that turd band called the Towers of London! LOL! what a joke they are! claim to bring back punk by swearing/yelling and acting like tits? no boys!! that scene is gone! your morons! its 2009! life styles are different

  • why'd you put like 40 exclamation marks and smiley faces? and green day is pop punk, dookie was a pretty good record.

  • People are always slapping badges on stuff alot these days! as for me! I play guitar! and when I make music! I do what ever! it can have alot of sounds! or hardly any! I like a good overdrive pedal! and I dont give a shit about whats the IN music is :) I do it my way :)

  • holy shit.........

  • John is great.

Flowers was played by the Pistols way back then. Just to prove they couldn`t play, just like the press made everybody believe. The pres still sucks, John doesn`t.

  • this song is way up there on my popchart.

  • this song should have been about sid since its called flowers off romance

  • i wish i was in the 70's or 80's coz thats when punk was alive. i dont think its dead but everyones emo now!!!! its annoying got nowt against them coz mi mate is a emo but im a punk and theres no good punk bands anymore! i had to make my own fucking punk band!

  • You sound like a complete idiot. If you knew what punk rock really meant, you wouldn't try to pigeon hole yourself into a cute classification. "I'm punk rock!", "I'm emo!", "I'm a rocker!". Those sorts of statements are what killed all the energy that was poured into that music. So consider yourself one of many who helped bring about its death.

  • its not dead? and wtf? what are you talking about? your the idiot!

  • It is quite dead, I hope you can at least understand that.

  • um no its not dead :P theres still punk bands out and disco is dead. theres no disco bands out anymore, punk however is still alive with bands still out retard

  • cuz disco takes talent and skill und nobody got that nonemore

  • I am in a band in SoCal and we do a ton of mostly "so called" punk shows (name irrelevant) and when we get interviewed and they ask us "so... r u straightedge or hardcore etc...I always laugh...I try to tell them...WHAT YOU THINK IS PUNK TODAY IS NOT PUNK!!!...if you think NEW FOUND GLORY etc is punk...then we are NOT.....but we live and breathe John Lydon, Robert Smith, Jello Biafra and Velvet Underground...so you you decide....

  • Good on LYDON going against the grain musically. It would have been all too easy to form a SEX PISTOLS mark 2 type of band what the record company wanted apparently..

  • I rode an article in which Sting was saying he was more than just the product of Police (the band). I don't it is true. he is haunted by police. But here we have a man who manged solely to be more than a punk movement product, more than the sex pistols. This song is a mysterious bluesy cold dedication to someone. in it.

  • \John has never given in. He's a friggin hero. Everything is new and different. There's no corporatism w/ PIL and there's no forgiveness. There's no sanity and there's no blame.

It simply is what it is.

  • ...l could be Nero...

  • I am thinking, that maybe the whole fucking world was there!! Not so special anymore.

  • Lets remember he is badly miming on the incredibly shit TOTP. Kind of puts any arguments about PIL's musical direction into the shade doesn't it?

  • i can see why do you say this, PIL changed a lot after Flowers of Romance, but I wouldn't call it a downhill. John has always been trying to do something new and different. it would be boring if all their later albums were exactly like First issue (not saying that album is not a masterpiece)

    peace<3

  • You're just a kid who's ears are still far too young.

  • the last great pil moment, its all fuckin downhill from here

  • I know what you mean...I was there...

  • You were where?? You were in the studio where they filmed this??

  • no, i was at their show at the Palladium, New York, fall of 1979...it was a geat show...there was a following of fans whom johnny rotten helped to climb on stage..they danced to those tunes..it was really cool....

  • We were all there...we all danced and yelled out "Anarchy in the U.K.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" We all screamed and danced and danced and screamed...it was cool.

  • shut up you prick hes not dead

  • Right. John Simon Ritchie is dead.

  • The voice,image,persona-the founder of Alternative music, old Rotten is an ingeneous man.

  • i am yo soi ich nin je su8is 44 jaar. this musick i was 16,with girltrouble, this us 1 of the songs that helped me therapeutically,i gave somany flowers for free

  • The song is for Sid youtubers

  • banging the door was the best in my view

  • yes i think martin gets to litte respect he is a fab drummer and his band pigface are fucking ace, banging on the door is class

  • This song is the best one off that album, which was a masterpiece, btw. One of the best albums of that time.

  • Love this fucking song -- don't know why more PiL fans don't dig it.

  • It's funny that pil fans have a hard time with this album, because it happens to be among the best pil material out there. admitedly the most inaccessible album, it is the most sophisticated (except maybe second edition/metal box) music pil ever put in your face - deal with it.

  • fuck off you idiot

  • What the fuck you weirdo???

Your a freak and johnny probably hates your guts to the core now you wanker!!!!!

  • this is original, a new kind of new. where did this go? Only Christ knows. Apparently. Ahem.

  • nice song! I'm surprised it made it to TOTP though. I wish America was as accepting of ecletic music

  • classic

kind of makes you despair for modern musuic whwn a 25 yr old track like this pisses on everything

  • there are a few people here who do not like the music which begs the questions why are you watching and why dont you fuck off and play with the traffic you cunts

  • well.. kind of reminds me of a bad trip, but I can appreciate their other tunes.

  • so's ya breath m8

  • well eat shit

    <
