Holy shit, i haven't seen that in ages. i moved to the states 5 years ago now, but i used to go see these all the time. i was lucky enough to be there when they had the Flying Scotsman come and do it =D thanks for the video man!
They did that until the 70's, I used to work on the railways.Before the train got to lineside bag apparatus, they'd open the door and just put a bar across. Though it might look dangerous it was all to the Post Office/Railway rule book and staff properly trained. In darkness the staff could guage exactly where the train was i.e. so many clicks on the track joints over say a viaduct and then the apparatus
