@ponandziify If you are thinking about how well you are singing, it's not honoring to God. It's not about a beautiful melody. But if you think about the lyrics you are singing, and sing with your heart, that is honoring to God. And what people will most enjoy is when you show them how to enjoy God and look to Him. He is much more enjoyable than a nice melody, and seeing the heart of a young person turned wholely to God is a great delight.

@thecindylorraine In the original Authorised Version, Isaiah 59, it says 'when the enemy comes in like a flood, the spirit of the Lord raises a standard against him'. This is true, and it's experience that grows confidence (=faith in the mercy of Jesus), so when you're having a hard time, remember it' s because you must be doing something right !

I've been having a tough time in the 18 months or so since I got baptised, but time and time again just as I think I can't take anymore, the Lord does something to alleviate the problem. I feel so ungrateful when I am never content with what he gives me, but I'm doing my best. I don't know what the other side of these troubles is going to look like, but I know he will be with me there too- so it has to be beautiful!

It's strange the Protestants sing this song, when it contains many Catholic doctrines, in both the Old Irish version and even in the popular translation.

Old Irish: "With the King of all, with him after victory won BY PIETY" - Salvation by works.

Popular Translation: "My victory won, May I reach heaven's joy" - Purgatory (notice the man is not in the Church Militant, since he has won victory, yet is not yet in heaven).

But perhaps I'm reading into this too much...

 Considering the verse is about wearing the whole armor of God, "strong" is clearly the better original word to use.

Yes, we as Christians should have a standard of behavior -- honestly, integrity, truth, "dignity", etc. However, what Robin Mark's lyrics state is "Be Thou my DIGNITY, Thou my delight" -- which is quite different..

Jesus is our righteousness, our holy sacrifice, etc. However, "dignity" is not an attribute I can find in the Bible that we spiritually inherit.

It's awesome to finally find a version that still sings verse three - most artists seem to omit it for some unknown reason.

The call for God to be our strength in the face of attack is for me the strongest part of this song; by singing it, we are asking God to protect us, to command us, to fight for us and if necessary to cover our retreat.

Where God's banner flies, there will never be total defeat; we know that the ultimate victory will be his!

In his version the verses are: 1, 2, 5, 3, 4, 1.

Some word changes he does:
