do not buy this car my friend an i had terrible experiences with it. flooding, apex seals, engine replacement you name it. we also followed all the rotary engine guidelines and the cars stilled failed us (we both bought the rx8 i had manual he had auto) mpg is horrible and straight line performance is disappointing. only good this about this car was the handling and looks. go for a nissan z car or even better a honda s2000.
now I really like the rx8. good looking car but most importantly it handles well. but I wouldnt want to own one just like I wouldnt want to own an s2000 which I like better. both cars while full out sports cars and handle on rails just lack power. 14s arent that fast and Ive read that a lot of rx8s run 15s. yes you can go forced induction but if you took that 5k to do it right you couldve gotten a viper or a vette and had the power+handling stock. with that said rx8 is a great real drivers car
The RX8 was a fun car. 4 seats = more conventional. The handling is superb. Going around corners was awesome.
The biggest problem is torque. Lots of high end power....nothing down low. The automatic (performance wise) is comparable to a sedan.....really not something to boast about on a sports car. The manual is faster but it is still behind the competition.
Though if you are in the market and don't care about power or plan to get forced induction...it is a great car.
@01jordanfirst You don't need to warm up that log befpre driving 3 min is ok for good care you need to warm up for 10 minutes before turn off engine if you are in real could weather for precaution only . from 06 new sparks are helping & no one is complaining about flooding problems. The mazda rx8 is pretty sweet. Its like a practical daily sports car. If i had needed the practicality this would have been the choice over my s2000. Friend has one with 2 tone leather seats. That interior is enviable.

It's very smart to put a 1970cc Inline-4 engine NOT V4 in a pick-up who been supposed to work hard WOW. The Small Protege (lead by Ford) was a Inline-4 1991cc engine.
garbage car, the rx7 is superior in every way, this car has piss poor handling compared to everything else in it's price range. Hell a FWD Chevrolet Cobalt SS can lap any track on the planet several seconds faster than this thing.
Such a disappointment considering the FD's were one of the best affordable sports cars ever.

It is a give and take situation with this car. Without going into it, all I want to know is what is that stupid black plastic piece just in front of the bumper? That weird lip thing? Does it do anything? Because if I got the 2009+ over the 1st gen I would want to remove that asap. Aside from the fact that other than the looks the 2008 and under models are better all around.

This is truly a great car. Although it has poor gas mileage and maybe outshined by other more powerful cars the RX-8 is a beautiful and most unique car. I owe my life to the safety features of this car. My little RX8 took the full brunt of an accident I had in it. Both me and my passenger walked away with minor bruises. I love this car!
Wow, Mazda didn't change the engine at all... Why the fuck would you shell out over $30K for a car that makes only 232hp? The freaking Mazda3 makes 263hp and 280ft-lbs for less money and would destroy this car. They need to put at least a 260hp powerplant in this car before I take it seriously again. @skeegle Its good for what is does. This car isnt meant to be a drag racer. It can handle extremely well and can rev very high. This car is better suited to auto x and track racing. Besides mazdaspeed 3 while a nice car also suffers from "fail wheel drive" or FWD in short. The torque steer and lack of grip to pavement is a big deal breaker if you are one to have experienced the power deliverly of a rwd car.

drove a new one with 8 miles on it.. not very impressed. front fender lights= negative, new bumper= negative, the seats are a lower, which i liked, but the interior is gaudy, and it seemed pretty much the same off the line, only thing i like are the new tail lights, other than that, ill keep my '04 with strut tower n sway bars n ill just add the tail lights :) much better car

I just bought an RX8 GT, with the luxury package, deep metalic blue, what a beautiful machine it is. My sweet little wife does not drive standard so I have the 6 speed automatic. Sure I gave up some HP going auto. but those paddle shifters are an absolute blast. I'm in my mid 60's and I have never owned a car that has been so much fun to drive and when I flick down the paddle shifter to 3rd. and 2nd. there is more than enough torque for me.

I just returned from a two day 1600 km. trip my RX8 performed to perfection, going up a long incline on the highway in 6th. gear, flick it down two into 4th. give it the gas and you have all the ZOOM ZOOM power you would ever require.
I would really like you in my car, for you to drive it out on the highway, get her up to 200 kph, awesome !!
They should have mentioned that they were reviewing the R3, not the standard model.
They also left out the biggest enhancement: a third oil injector. That should improve reliability, and is a clue that older RX-8s should really use premix.
I can't wait for the 16X, the long stroke, direct injection, and better ignition is supposed to create an actually torquey rotary, with hp around 300 NA. That will be nice.

You won't get equal HP and torque with a rotary engine, by design. They always have a lot more peak HP than torque.
But that's only *peak* torque, what you may not realize is how flat the torque curve of a rotary engine is.
The RX-8 can take cars with much higher peak torque because the rotary can hold near-peak torque much longer. The power band is high up but very wide.
This is a 14.5 sec car in the 1/4 mile, with only about 160 ft/lbs of peak torque at the flywheel.
Yes I'm very sure they don't but my point is that over here there's only recon car and so it's cheap, if it's cheap everyone buys it and without second thoughts they supercharge it..

it will give you equal traction to both the wheels as long as both wheels are on the same surface. This way one tire will never spin and one wont like on a car with a standard diff
Mate, You are so right. I got the original rx-8 and the front grill is my favorite part when it comes too looks. The car looks best when viewed face on. When I see this vid it was the first thing I noticed they had changed / wrecked. Apart from that. Great car.

Not stock, well it could, if you got it tuned correctly, because Mazda tunes the 1.3 to a comfortable drive, so they will sell more. Now, when the new 16x engine comes out in 2012, I doubt it would have any problem with a Hyundai. Its gonna be a lot lighter, and is supposed to have a significant torque and BHP gain, compared to the 1.3 13b renesis thats in there right now.

Just tell me if it's reliable. I don't want to spend more than $30k. The dealer is selling the grand touring model for $27k, so, looking at cars in higher price ranges is NOT an option for me, even if faster. Also, I NEED the back seats this car has. SEEMS fun, sporty and a tad more practical than most.
I bought my rx8r3 in atlanta 2mos ago and got it for 27k down from 33k they come with 100k mile 8yr motor warr. so Im not worried about probs , I had two 2nd gen. rx7 and put 150k on each no probs. The 09 rx8 has had a lot of refinement done to the motor and all the nagging things such as flooding probs and oil coolers (have been doubled in size) too small have been fixed, I love this car its quiet and comfortabe when u want and a race car on demand its a true drvers car very nice back seats.
i just bought this car two wks ago the r3 model, the retail 33k was reduced to 26k and i have to have 4 doors as i have a small child, i know of no other car that gives this level of performance and looks( in my opinion) as well as functionality and fun to drive at this price. i know everybody wants to look at 0-60 and thats all but theres always other factors, oh and the 8yr 100k mile warrentee on the engine is nice too.
What do you mean on performance? Cause, I can think of quite a few cars that put the R3 to shame in terms of mechanical engineering. Besides, I don't think the rotary system is really designed for the average parent with their daily driving...

The reason the engine has major problems is because of the drivers! Most people aren't mechanically inclined enough to recognize that it's a rotary engine not a four cylinder piston. This engine has special needs and needs care. For instance in winter you need to let it run up for 15min or you'll flood the engine which causes it not to start. Also this is not a stop and go car. This is not a run to the store down the block car, it's meant to be driven hard and long distances.
elliottwood you dont know shit about rotory engines they have one of the lowest repair rates of any sportscar on the mkt chk us news and world reports, I have had 3 rx7 and put over 150k hard miles on all of them and had no probs. also the only japanese make to win the 24hrs at lemans was a rotory powered mazda. its the only affordable exotic engine on the mkt and even thow is not the quickest in a straight line it enhanses the driving experiace for those who can appretiate it.
Yeah that Rotory Engine Cost $7000.00. U better have a GOOD WARRANTY. If u Fuck that engine up Mazda will not replace that engine for misuse or out of warranty. They are known for that. I use to own one. Ask any Rx8 owner that engine has major problems. Rx8 owners will not race that car out of warranty. The owners drive like snails. Ford Probe GT any day. Who cares if it goes 141mph. Atleast it works and i can find every part for the car. Yes GTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT Probe.

@skeegle Its good for what is does. This car isnt meant to be a drag racer. It can handle extremely well and can rev very high. This car is better suited to auto x and track racing. Besides mazdaspeed 3 while a nice car also suffers from "fail wheel drive" or FWD in short. The torque steer and lack of grip to pavement is a big deal breaker if you are one to have experienced the power deliverly of a rwd car.

Wake up Mazda! bring back the 1993 set up from the rx7 or put in the 2.3 liter MAzda 3 speed engine...........just do something..... you are loosing the game and you have ruined the Rotary reputation..... i had a 2006 rx8 gt and sold it for a cx7 all because it was underpowered........some people like speed in a sports car that's the main reason they buy it ...................

@Bobbymustangrx8 The problem is reliability. RX-7s were a huge flop when they came out, and were very unreliable with tons of problems and recalls. Sure, everyone loves them now - but back in 93, they were a joke.

In my my opinion an 04 looks better than the other newer models. Its just my opinion. But i have an 07 lol....Kinda stupid of me sayin' this, i mean the layout of the new model it doesn't get much of my attention...Yeah more HP but im happy with mine :)

drove a new one with 8 miles on it.. not very impressed. front fender lights= negative, new bumper= negative, the seats are a lower, which i liked, but the interior is gaudy, and it seemed pretty much the same off the line, only thing i like are the new tail lights, other than that, ill keep my '04 with strut tower n sway bars n ill just add the tail lights :) much better car

I just bought an RX8 GT, with the luxury package, deep metalic blue, what a beautiful machine it is. My sweet little wife does not drive standard so I have the 6 speed automatic. Sure I gave up some HP going auto. but those paddle shifters are an absolute blast. I'm in my mid 60's and I have never owned a car that has been so much fun to drive and when I flick down the paddle shifter to 3rd. and 2nd. there is more than enough torque for me.
Just a great ride in a luxury filled interior, ZOOM !!

I just returned from a two day 1600 km. trip my RX8 performed to perfection, going up a long incline on the highway in 6th. gear, flick it down two into 4th. give it the gas and you have all the ZOOM ZOOM power you would ever require.
I would really like you in my car, for you to drive it out on the highway, get her up to 200 kph, awesome !!

They should have mentioned that they were reviewing the R3, not the standard model.
They also left out the biggest enhancement: a third oil injector. That should improve reliability, and is a clue that older RX-8s should really use premix.

I can't wait for the 16X, the long stroke, direct injection, and better ignition is supposed to create an actually torquey rotary, with hp around 300 NA. That will be nice.

Um, no. There are no RX-8s that come from the factory with forced induction. Aftermarket add-ons don't count, you can do that to any car.

You won't get equal HP and torque with a rotary engine, by design. They always have a lot more peak HP than torque.
But that's only *peak* torque, what you may not realize is how flat the torque curve of a rotary engine is.
The RX-8 can take cars with much higher peak torque because the rotary can hold near-peak torque much longer. The power band is high up but very wide.
This is a 14.5 sec car in the 1/4 mile, with only about 160 ft/lbs of peak torque at the flywheel.

it will give you equal traction to both the wheels as long as both wheels are on the same surface. This way one tire will never spin and one wont like on a car with a standard diff

Not stock, well it could, if you got it tuned correctly, because Mazda tunes the 1.3 to a comfortable drive, so they will sell more. Now, when the new 16x engine comes out in 2012, I doubt it would have any problem with a Hyundai. Its gonna be a lot lighter, and is supposed to have a significant torque and BHP gain, compared to the 1.3 13b renesis thats in there right now.

is there a place to go and ask questions about the RX-8 and NOT get into some weird contest with strangers? I already love the way the car looks AND I like the way it drives. I'm no mechanic. Just tell me if it's reliable. I don't want to spend more than $30k. The dealer is selling the grand touring model for $27k, so, looking at cars in higher price ranges is NOT an option for me, even if faster. Also, I NEED the back seats this car has. SEEMS fun, sporty and a tad more practical than most.

I bought my rx8r3 in atlanta 2mos ago and got it for 27k down from 33k they come with 100k mile 8yr motor warr. so Im not worried about probs , I had two 2nd gen. rx7 and put 150k on each no probs. The 09 rx8 has had a lot of refinement done to the motor and all the nagging things such as flooding probs and oil coolers (have been doubled in size) too small have been fixed, I love this car its quiet and comfortabe when u want and a race car on demand its a true drvers car very nice back seats.

i just bought this car two wks ago the r3 model, the retail 33k was reduced to 26k and i have to have 4 doors as i have a small child, i know of no other car that gives this level of performance and looks( in my opinion) as well as functionality and fun to drive at this price. i know everybody wants to look at 0-60 and thats all but theres always other factors, oh and the 8yr 100k mile warrentee on the engine is nice too.

What do you mean on performance? Cause, I can think of quite a few cars that put the R3 to shame in terms of mechanical engineering. Besides, I don't think the rotary system is really designed for the average parent with their daily driving...
But the handling, is superb.

nd before you say I'm a Mazda hater, I drive a Mazda Speed 3 07 hatch (my tune up car), and 2009 ACURA TSX (daily), so I am far from being a hater of the RX-8 or import in general. I'm just telling it how it is.
It's a great car, great handling, but for the price, I honestly don't think it's worth it.

Casey...Are you dumb? The only good thing about this car is it's handling, and it's additional 2 seats compared to other sports car such as the S2K, 370Z, etc.
Performance wise, it gets blown away, even when modded. Also, the rotary engine is not "PRACTICAL," for daily driving.
I understand this car might be a weekend car, but why have this Mazda junk when you could be driving a 335i coupe, Z4, 370Z, Audi TT turbo, hell even the Genesis 3.8 coupe, which are all worth the money, than this car

Like what? I'm in the market and would like to compare. It looks like a car I would remember owning and have good memories later on. Was thinking about a Miata but I'm afraid its too small, never had a two seater before and it would be awkward if I needed to drive two ladies home to my place (wont happen that often but I like to keep that option open). I'm truly open to suggestions but to just crap on this car without examples looks pretty weak on your part.

I think you give the Mazda praise by comparing it to cars that are 50% more then its price! I'm not buying a Genesis it wont hold its value and that seems to be the only one in the same price range. The reason the engine has major problems is because of the drivers! Most people aren't mechanically inclined enough to recognize that it's a rotary engine not a four cylinder piston. This engine has special needs and needs care. For instance in winter you need to let it run up for 15min or you'll flood the engine which causes it not to start. Also this is not a stop and go car. This is not a run to the store down the block car, it's meant to be driven hard and long distances.

elliottwood you dont know shit about rotory engines they have one of the lowest repair rates of any sportscar on the mkt chk us news and world reports, I have had 3 rx7 and put over 150k hard miles on all of them and had no probs. also the only japanese make to win the 24hrs at lemans was a rotory powered mazda. its the only affordable exotic engine on the mkt and even thow is not the quickest in a straight line it enhanses the driving experiace for those who can appretiate it.

Yeah that Rotory Engine Cost $7000.00. U better have a GOOD WARRANTY. If u Fuck that engine up Mazda will not replace that engine for misuse or out of warranty. They are known for that. I use to own one. Ask any Rx8 owner that engine has major problems. Rx8 owners will not race that car out of warranty. The owners drive like snails. Ford Probe GT any day. Who cares if it goes 141mph. Atleast it works and i can find every part for the car. Yes GTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT Probe.
