hello im learning to make music, and im having troubles mixing the bass what you do to sound wide because bass always its situated in the center an sound wide
Hey, thanks very much for your vid. One question, perhaps im a lil bit stupid ^^, but on 5:07 the sound switches immediately and sounds so much better, what did you do there. Sounds like panning, reverb and limiting/maximizing. Or was the part, from 3:55 to 5:06, without equalizing and compression? I don't think so.

Pete, if you record a drumset, get mics on the set. Make sure you have at least as many inputs on your interface (soundcard), set your tracks up to record those mics. Press record. You will get a little mic bleed when open miking drums. Place them close to the source of sound and mixing afterwards will be easier. Interface with 8 pro inputs, XLR mic ins. Tascam US-1641 $299, great unit. Get it.
It should not because when you double it in most programs it will be the same exact samples in the same exact spots, thus being exactly in phase because they're identical with each other
@DonJuanDeMarco2 It should not cause phase issues because it is the exact same track just copied. Phase issues are usually caused by someone who does not know how to mic an amp or drum set. It happens when one sound is being picked up at different times by different mics. Usually caused by bad mic placement. Since it is a common practice to run the bass straight into a mixer through a DI box and sometimes mic the amp and mix it in with the DI signal, phase is not usually a problem.
wanted to show users how to get those sounds with in-expensive plug ins. but yes, i would recommend the Izotope plug-ins over stock nuendo EQs any day!
it's weird. the mix got all f'd when i rendered as a flash video file. maybe it was the kb rate i used. going to double check on the next ones we do before we post next time.
@P5audio It has to be the video quality. Just listen to a song in mp3-quality and compare it to an original uncompressed CD. Huge difference. Great vid, great tips, I'll play around with what you did and test it with my own stuff.
@P5audio I think it's great... afterall you are mixing modern stuff... the drums should be louder then the other parts... listen to Paramore or the new MeatLoaf... !
So...was waiting to see what the bass guitar sounded like solo'd, before and after. Never heard the bass guitar solo'd...always mixed with the distorted guitars. What's up with that?
hey you think you can maybe do a video on mixing like really heavily distorted guitars, like "metal" mixing techniques, i cant find anything on youtube with it.
Good point, I watched A LOT of mixing videos and tutorials, I have a lot of DVD's and everything, and it's always pop-rock songs. And mixing metal has same principles but it's really different as well. I have ben mixing metal for quite some time now, as audio engineer is my proffesion... but I still need to get better and then maybe I do a video on mixing metal \m/
Good Question. Because on the second bass track I have a quadrafuzz plugin which adds both distortion and a little more fullness to to the bass string sound. I wanted to bring out fuller and grittier string sound, so only applied a 4kHz EQ boost to this line. I could have added it only to the original line, but to me it didn't sound aggressive enough for this type of music. Hope this answers your question.
thanks homie. really appreciate that. yeah, we've gotten a lot of requests for tutorials vocal production. we'll have something up in the next month or so.
in general just rock music, i find it very difficult to get every word to be at the same volume and stand out in the mix. also when there is many layers of vocals happening at the same time to not just sound like a big mess
There are several tricks you gotta implement in order to get your vocals even. For one, you need about and 8 to 1 ratio for compression in general for vocals. Two, you need to usually automate the volume of your vocal lines a little bit to even them out. Then, you gotta add some EQ to bring out the high end diction, and in lots of times roll off low end EQ to get rid of any mud you may have in the track...
thanx dude, ive been searchin on some standard of eq and compression, i still have a problem with having all the snare hits at the same volume. ooo and if you have any tips on mixing in vocals with a mix would be great too.
cool stuff

I'm not sure but I think that a snare sound like in Metallica's St.Anger would suit this song quite well

Hell there, I was hoping that perhaps you would provide me with a link to a tutorial to learn everything from scratch ?

Doesn't doubling the bass track bring in phase problems ?
Nice sounding mix of the drums, bass and guitar, but the scratching and fx have to go !!

@DonJuanDeMarco2 only if one track is nudged out of phase. keeping it in time will double the loudness

Do you normally place the EQ after the comp?
Cheers,

k so on the 1st bass guitar, you rolled off the HI end and low end, then on the 2nd bass, you boosted the HI End Only.. and a bit of O.D.
On Regular guitars, this concept doesnt really apply? The settings are the same for BOTH?
