I worked on the opera, 'La Traviata' in Mobile, AL last November and had the pleasure of meeting Jane Redding and talk with her on several occasions during the opera's run. She is a true lady with an awesome talent.
I heard David Walker at Central City Opera in Monteverdi's "Coronation." His voice had good power, clarity, and timbre; and his acting was excellent. I was very impressed.
Looks a great witty production! Would've loved to see it! If I must quibble, they should've had a (mezzo) soprano, male or female, for Nerone. That tenor shown here, even from that little bit, was not quite right for the role, vocally. Should've at least been a lighter, more flexible tenor, such as David Kuebler on the Michael Hempe production DVD.
Beautiful music and voices! (Although the countertenors type of voice is a bit odd, still, for me to hear) Its not often that Handel's other operas (outside of Alcina and Giulio Cesare) gets to be performed. (Personally I think that's very sad, because with the right stage direction and costumes, I think it can be done)
Bravi a tutte! I drove all the way up to Richmond from Chapel Hill, NC (165 miles) just for this producution. Virginia Opera didn't disappoint. The cast and production were thrilling. I especially enjoyed countertenor David Walker, who was outstanding. I hope that Virginia Opera will give us more Handel operas in the future. If so, I will be back, and so will my friends here in North Carolina.
This is the greatest opera in that Virginia Opera has ever done (in my opinion). The best part was when Nero, in his boxers, fell on Claudius by accident!
The singers are very well, especially David Walker sounds very excellent!
And everythings looks very funny!
But the orchestra plays in romantic style!

I was in the production of Lucia Di Lammermoor that Sujung did back in 96 or 97 I think. I loved her then. Such an amazing new talent.

Nice voices pity about the utterly disgusting and horrid staging, it completely ruins Haendel's music.

Congratulations to VA Opera! I've been a subscriber for over 20 years and I've got to say that this is the best staging I've ever seen!
