Some can really make something of themselves - more that the parts add up to. Mae was one of those, that light their own way. Even today, where her looks, shape and style is more caricature - she pulls it off. Eighty years later, we still fall for Mae. Her wit, personality and panache make her beautiful and desirable.
(sorta like Queen Latifa. Who would expect her to be a star - yet she wills herself to be one, and it works)
I've always wondered about that particular sentence in the lyrics...there WAS, however, a Frisco Charlie who was a burglar of some renown.
That would make some sense. Because the other thing I'd previously thought was that it might have something to do with jumping a claim. Not so sure now.
I wish I could understand the words to the song better! There is a line in the middle where she says "He's wanted in Tacoma and Oklahoma" and I can't understand the next line. Does anyone know what she is saying?
Thank you! That sounds right to me. If it isn't, it's close enough. My neice is playing Mae at the casino she works at and is singing a lot of her songs. It's hard to find the lyrics anywhere!
I love this movie . Mae has great lines. Even Paul Cavannagh is great but its hard to watch Grant Withers at this stage in his career, I think he was a great star at one time and was married to Loretta Young. I could be wrong. but he drank too much which Mae must have hated.
It's all there in this clip - everything MW was about. The consummate professional entertainer always in the spot light with the firecracker author behind it all. Funny!
Watch how she steers Grant Withers around the dance floor when his shoulder starts blocking her face. And does she sing the s**t out of that song or what?
This is probably the last film where the flame burns bright. After this the censors and "moral guardians" finally beat her down - and sent her back to the stage.
You are so on the money. This entire film is Mae West at her best... I have a couple more scenes I'm particularly fond of but just have not had time.. I should just post the whole movie "-) There are so many different and important meanings and influences all going on... she really was brilliant
If that's what Mae meant, then why would she insist on repeating it? She did, after all, write the script aided by her vast experience with joke timing on stage. I think she knew she was pulling a fast one on the censors and wanted to rub it in while she ran it past.
I am not disputing you, I watched it again twice and I still contend she says, "... in your EYES big boy, in your eyes..." I am aware she wrote her material and her bouts with censors (screw 'em all!). I still love her and wish I could have known her personally...and Tallulah Bankhead as well!!!
@Goethefemme OMG! I thought that she said in your "eyes," Thanks for clarifying that. I now see why the censors where after her! She was way ahead of her time! What a phenomenal star! Undoubtedly, she helped to start the sexual revolution.
About 15 years ago, being the fanatic that I am, I rented the 35mm films used in theaters and recorded it on video.. but now you can get it on VHS and DVD
"For a long time I was ashamed of the way I lived..."

I like when she says "I was born this way". I think Lady Gaga took a lesson or two from the great Mae West.
