it becomes a real relationship later in the show. they are together, open and publicly for a very long time. i don't think it's dumbed down. this shows the struggle a boy goes through discovering himself and accepting who he really is and letting others see who he is and accept him, and form true bonds with the person he really is, not the person he was pretending to be. a lot of people go through this, and spend a lot of time figuring out if they are ready to be who they really are and come out

So the only TV history being made here is this being the first kiss by two young gay characters, because the aforementioned gay characters on "AMC" & "OLTL" were actuaklly younger than "Luke" & "Noah."
And Ryan Philippe played "Billy Douglas," a gay male high school student on "One Life To Live" back in '92, which wsa actually the first, continuing young gay male character on a daytime soap. I realize that was pre-You Tube, but that's a fact of TV history.
For that matter, "ATWT" itself introduced the first gay male on a daytime soap back in the '80's, in an AIDS storyline, and "All My Children" had a gay male high school character (who had a boyfriend) back in the '90's, played by actor Ben Jorgensen.
Plus, has everyone already forgotten Showtime's "Queer As Folk," which had a lot more than kissing going on between men? And there was a British version of that before the Showtime show. So lots of gay TV before this show with these characters.
Also, Norman Lear's sitcom, "Hot L Baltimore" had a gay couple living at the titled show's hotel; Billy Creystal played "Jody," a gay man who wants to get a sex change, on the ABC soap parody "Soap," and Tony Randall was the star of his own sitcom about a gay man living as a brother & father figure to this unmarried woman (played by Swoozie Kurtz) & her daughter, an '80's NBC series called "Love Sidney."

They're both straight as far as anyone knows. The weirdest thing for all actors is probably having to kiss a co-worker, regardless of gender. Gay actors have to kiss the opposite gender all the time and no one thinks it's weird. These two are good actors so they make it look good.

Actually neither of those statements is confirmed. The rumor that Van is gay is based on a non-authenticated piece of gossip from Perez Hilton. It seems to have traveled the web and become "truth" to a lot of people, but the actual truth is nobody knows. And while we're on the subject, what makes people so sure Jake is straight? As far as I know and I've done extensive research because I'm DEEPLY interested in the subject ;) there is nothing at all to indicate Jake's orientation.

Also, Norman Lear's sitcom, "Hot L Baltimore" had a gay couple living at the titled show's hotel; Billy Creystal played "Jody," a gay man who wants to get a sex change, on the ABC soap parody "Soap," and Tony Randall was the star of his own sitcom about a gay man living as a brother & father figure to this unmarried woman (played by Swoozie Kurtz) & her daughter, an '80's NBC series called "Love Sidney."

It's sad, isn't it, that you get negative reviews for pointing out positive things, such as that gay characters have been a part of American TV for nearly 40 years. People need to be perpetual victims, I guess. Pretty damn sad.
