Ensure your annotations are switched on. It explains how you can get it for free (I've uploaded a copy of the software that was free at the time this video was made).
Unfortunately, no it doesn't. If you install XP seperately to XP, it won't think there's another OS on the drive. And because XP doesn't like Vista (Vista came out later than XP did), it'll have problems recognising it anyway.
okay guys to partition your hard drive on xp (you can't do it in windows) you can download gparted (It IS a LiveCD, meaning you have to boot from it). You can partition your hard drive from there and it works great.
hi, if you install Windows XP, and leave Vista alone, XP won't recognise Vista. You basically won't be able to chose which partition on the hard drive you want to boot into. Likewise, if you reinstate Vista, but don't tell it that XP is actually there, it won't recognise XP, and won't give you an option to boot into it.
No. The CD is there to reinstate Vista (it rectifies the boot loader, so Vista actually has the chance to boot). If I could do it in safe mode, I would have done it, trust me =)
this is a reference to your first video, can't you just have Xp on that partitioned space and then when you boot select it from the menu? also, is there anyway to partition a hard drive on an xp (without 3rd party software) computer?
hi, as far as I'm aware, you can't partition a drive in Windows XP, without third party software. If you need to shrink an XP partition, your best bet is to to have a look at my video '42', which deals with shrinking partitions.
hi, no. You're basically putting Vista on one side of your hard drive (your computer), and installing XP onto the other side. It should leave Vista alone.
If you go to my website (accessible via the channel page), and click 'Downloads' at the top of the page, then search for reference number '1007', this takes you to a document that talks you through this procedure using two hard drives.
It sounds like it is already partitioned, yeah. If it's been preformatted, make sure there's no recovery information before you overwrite a partition, or alternatively, shrink the hard drive, and create a third partition.
hi, no, it won't effect your other partition(unless you tell it to). When partitioning an hard drive, you're basically making your computer think you have two phyiscal hard drives (when in reality, you only have the one).
If you have two hard drives, it won't effect your other one (though this procedure varies very slightly).
i tried installing xp onmy vista and on the os boot list it only said xp..... luckily my buddy gave me a vista repair disc.... cause i couldn't boot vista..
It usually does a BSOD if you need SATA controllers installed. You can usually find these on your mainboard manufacturers website. You burn these to a CD (or a floppy), and when you tells you 'Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver' ( 01:12 ), press 'F6', and you install the CD you downloaded from the website.
hi, it looks like they've decided to charge people for their software, for some weird reason or other. What I'll do, is look for the free version of the software (that I downloaded when I did this video), and upload it (if I can find it). I'll let you know if it goes up.
Thanks, but i just realized that cant boot to my xp! so i just removed the damn thing, and now im just trying to learn the whole doulbebooting from scrach so nothing will go wrong, but thanks anyway
do you know why my internet doesn't work when im on xp( i dualbooted xp along vista to my laptop(vista pre-installed i had no dvds so i had to use some backup cds i made)....) and it works perfectly on vista??
hi, it sounds like you're missing your NIC (Network Interface Card) drivers. If your Ethernet port is apart of the mainboard (onboard), then you can just search online for the mainboard drivers. If, however, your Network Card is an extension, you will need to find out who made it, and search their website (on the OS you are able to get onto the Internet).
You can sometimes find what card you have, by going into the control panel, double clicking 'System' (ensuring that you're in 'classic view'). Then clicking the 'hardware' tab, then 'Device manager'. You then expand 'Network adaptors', and the information will be displayed in there. If it's unrecognised, it'll usually show a question mark. Just double click it, and see if it gives you the required information.
hi, it sounds like you need to install SATA controllers with XP (I'm assuming that when you try to install XP, or at a certain time, you get the BSOD).
When you run the XP setup, at the time it says "Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or Raid driver", this is the time you need to install any controllers. You usually download these in the *.iso format, from your hard drive's (or your mainboard's) manufacturer.
Those last two comments by manouski007 were actually mine, i was on the wrong account sorry, if you could please reply to me wrather then manouski that would be great. By the way Kurtis thanks for all your help, i know you took time to make these videos i requested and i appreciate that.
hi there, sorry for the delay. I did this video after a clean install of Vista and XP, which may be the reason you're unable to locate the three appropriate files in the drive.
I had similar problems when it comes to changing the drive letter. I realised that you had to check the box to the left of "Change boot drive". Simply changing the letter wasn't enough. So just ensure that you've checked the box, then click "Apply updates", and let me know how you get on.
Also I did not find those three files in the vista partition, but i did find them in the xp partition, so what i did is i copied them from the xp partition into the vista partition rathther then the opposite i dont know if this also affected my attempt at fixing the dualboot.
ok so i did everything you said in the video, but it didnt work, it just still boots into xp, i think it's because on my computer Xp is on C drive and vista is on the E drive, also when i tried to change the vista drive to E on boot pro i get that error screen and say no, but then when i look at the settings it still says vista is on the D drive which is wrong. Do you have any idea what i did wrong?
Vista says "Windows is starting for the first time", XP usually just goes straight to the "setup" screen, where you say up things such as activation, security options, etc.
It sounds like your XP installation has messed up somewhere, so what I suggest you do is reinstall XP again. At "02:00" (this video), you want to delete the partition that is XP's, and then you want to install into the new found space.
Ya, its not booting in the hard Drive when it says Press any key to continue? It just stays like that? I cant boot into anything, i tried rebooting without any Cd and i get stuck at "Boot from a CD/DVD" Are there any solutions???
And it never says Windows Xp is starting for the first time :*( it just goes to 5 Dots to where it says Press any key to continue, and then it stays like that when i dont press anything and then when i do try to press a key nothing happens?
Well when it only goes up to 5 dots and then when i try to press any other button it doesn't do anything but the computer makes a noise? and I am still in the same place I don't boot into windows XP or Anything? its just stuck there, im typing this with a different PC Btw
I followed the steps in Dual booting Vista preinstalled but when it asks you to press any key And you said to ignore it when there is 5 dots it does not load it just stays there and when i try to press something, nothing happens? I don't know what to do?
hi, the reason I say ignore it when asked to boot into CD, is because the computer needs to boot into the hard drive, to finish off the installation.
If you're getting loads of dots appearing on the screen (it should say "Windows is startuping up for the first time, please wait", or something like that, this is normal.
hi, I used to get that error when I selected the wrong drive. Make sure you've selected the correct drive for Windows XP. (Remember to check "Change boot drive", if you haven't). Additionally, when I hadn't found out to copy and paste the three files, errors like that popped up often.
What I suggest you do, is go back into the Windows XP reinstallation program, and note down the drive letters of each hard drive, and then change them accordingly in VistaBootPro (00:39 - 02:29). Hope this helps.
I was going to add the files to copy, etc, into the video itself (onto a PowerPoint). But as you can probably see, I've barely managed to fit the video into the time frame I have. As a replacement, I have used YouTube's annotations feature. These can optionally be turned off (by clicking the box lower right of the player). This information can also be found in the video description.

If you look in the video description, the things you need to change are in there. "The three files" is the heading", and "the three options" are what you need to change in "folder options \ view". Hope this helps.
KurtisICT 3 years ago
So basically, the three files are:
- boot.ini
- ntldr
- NTDETECT . com
And the three options are:
- (uncheck) hide protected operating system files,
- (uncheck) hide extensions for known file types,
- (select) show hidden files and folders.
