I keeps mantises and they are generally NOT able to take down wasps or hornets.

Mantises are "ambush" predators. They catch prey by surprise. Hornets are hunters, and attempt to attack and kill every insect they can find with their jaws and stinger.

A mantis isn't built to fight. A hornet is. This is why the mantis will usually lose.

HOWEVER, some species of mantis can get almost 2 or 3 times the size of a hornet. This is why some species of mantis will still ocasionally win.
